If you want to add to my list I have a frequently updated list of dances

BTW I would be inclined to put a warning on halls for hire. I frequently find that Hallshire list post codes that people would assume are for the Hall. IME this is rarely true the post code is usually for the caretaker. Indeed the local gov site for Gloucs, they ignored my suggestion of listing post codes when I gave them a few in spite of telling them I had been to the halls and could verify them as usable.

As you might imagine, I found the problemo the hard way. Google Earth is often a better informant. And an interesting, if time consuming pass-time. http://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode is getting better at Village Halls, but still has a long way to go. I keep all my found/beento ones.

I had a load of bookmarks for regional magazines, associations, federations and so on.

It was confusing.
It's still fairly confusing but I popped them on a map, linked to a basic WordPress page.

People nowadays tend to check gigs from the artists' websites as these can accommodate late changes such as cancellations, date changes and alternative venues. Does your mystery band have a website? If not, consider creating one, however simple (bio/gigs/recordings/sales/links). You can then include the URL in any advertising/reviews/blatant self-promotion.

I'd advise against it. It is a massive undertaking. Even those covering regions struggle to get accurate upto date information. That was the big reason why we at folkinfo decided to opt for links to other listings.

Sorry - I meant do people find out about gigs from internet listings, or do the usual magazines, posters, editorial things get your attention better - just wondering how effective it is likely to be, as I've no experioence of this, as yet

Nothing wrong with a bit of shameless self-advertising on Mudcat. It is just a question of how you do it.
Some people use any thread as an excuse to plug themselves (or their loved ones), which I personally find rude and intrusive when it has got nothing to do with the subject of the thread.
Some people are more sensitive, but still mention their gigs as often as they can slip in a reference which does not detract from the thread.
Other people start disguised threads, which turn out to be self promotion once you actually read them.
My preference is for an up-front "We are advertising a gig (or tour)" Thread. If you look back through the forum ( do a search for "Punch the Horse" ) you will find many "GIG" threads. Perhaps the most common are ones for Hull band Punch the Horse, who do a lot of pub gigs. When PTH threads first appeared, there were vast numbers of them due to enthusiastic fans or band members (I can't recall which) starting a new thread for each individual event. This did produce complaints about Mudcat being swamped with them.
The question was resolved by an agreement that there would be a new PTH thread each month giving performance details and other siliness. At the end of the month, a new thread starts and the old ones are left to sink into the muddy waters at the bottom of the Mudcat pond. This reduced the number of new PTH threads to 2 a year.

By the way, you haven't mentioned what band your boyfriend is in. You won't get ANY publicity if you don't mention it.
Of course, should you use Mudcat for listing performances, it would be good manners to sign up as a proper member and tell us something about you. It doesn't cost anything, and you can be as cryptic as you wish, but you will find a bunch of nice folk within these doors.

You can make a start with these two: Martin Nail - English folk and traditional music on the Internet - Regional and EFDSS WebLinks. They both have links to various regional mags that are on the net. Be aware though that updating may not be that frequent - most of the paper mags appear every 2, 3 or 4 months and the corresponding sites are probably updated at the same time. You may need some lead time to get the listings in.

Hi - I would like to put up listings on the net for a range of gigs my boyfriend's band is doing but I don't have a comprehensive list of them all. I know that the regional folk mags often have sites which include gig lists and that there are also a number of folk forums which also have them. I know Mudcat doesn't and I don't particularly want to clog up your forum with gigs, but I wondered if all you knowledgeable people out there migh be able to help me pull together something like a comprehensive list. I'm UK based and would really like info across the UK (well, England, anyway, although they are off to Holland later in the year) as the band is starting to get about a bit.
