Subject: Any Promenaders on Mudcat ? From: Dave Bryant Date: 15 Jul 05 - 11:19 AM OK I know it's not strictly Folk Music, and probably only relates to 'catters who live near London, but are any of you regular attenders at the BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concerts ? I was only 15 when I went to my first prom - my school used to get free tickets and I've been hooked ever since - heard top Conductors, Orchestras, and Soloists for a bargain price - even now it only costs £4 a concert to prom in the arena or gallery - it was only 5 shillings (25p) when I first started ! Linda and I are planning to get the first night tonight - we'll have to see if I've still got enough stamina to get through a concert on my feet after my stroke. It's a great program: Berlioz: Overture - The Corsair Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto Elgar: Overture - Cockaigne followed by Tippett's: "A Child of Our Time" with it's powerful arrangements of negro sprirituals. If you want to get a promming ticket for the last night, then go to six proms and keep the ticket stubs and you can apply for one - at still only £4 pounds - Proms in the Park doesn't have a fraction of the atmosphere that you get inside the wourld's largest pudding basin. Who says that classical music is only an elite interest - it'll cost you more to go into most folk clubs on a guest night. |

Subject: RE: Any Promenaders on Mudcat ? From: treewind Date: 16 Jul 05 - 01:42 PM The Proms may (mostly) not be folk music, but here's an anecdote to bring the subject slightly more on topic: Many years ago, when I was a student and had the time for such things, I went to queue all afternoon for a prom, with some musician friends. To while away the time in the queue we brought instruments with us and played tunes. Someone came up and said they could call some dances and would we like to play, and the result was an impromptu ceilidh on the steps at the front of the Royal Albert Hall! Anahata |
Subject: RE: Any Promenaders on Mudcat ? From: Cod Fiddler Date: 17 Jul 05 - 09:05 AM Blazin Fiddles are playing at the Proms on 30th July! I'd be there every night if I didn't live in Hull. Nowhere else in the world can you get such top quality orchestras and performances, for such good value all summer long. Richard. |

Subject: RE: Any Promenaders on Mudcat ? From: Dave Bryant Date: 18 Jul 05 - 09:40 AM Linda and I really enjoyed the first night on Friday - Willard White was wonderful as the bass soloist in "A Child of our Time" - "Go down Moses" was awe inspiring. We're planning to try and make tomorrow for "The dream of Gerontias" - look ou for us if you're going - I like to be just ahead of the left hand side of the arena fountain (when it's there). BTW it was a bit to much of an ordeal for me to stand all the way through, but it wasn't too crowded and I managed to smuggle in one of those small tripod stools to sit down on from time to time. |
