From this coming Sunday (24th July) there will be a change to our programme of sessions in Beverley. The monthly plan now looks like this:

First Sunday - Monk's Walk from 2pm
Second & Third Sundays - Sun Inn from 3pm
Fourth Sunday - Hodgson's from 3pm
Fifth Sunday (when applicable) - Sun Inn from 3pm

In addition - Tuesday and Friday evenings in the Sun Inn

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to call these events 'music gatherings', or 'singaround' or 'musicians and singers meetings?

A session is a gathering of musicians who play Irish, English or Scottish or whatever, music of whatever genre. Although each of the events listed above are good events they are not sessions

Not a Session in the sense that all join in but could be if the tune was known or in a common key. Good fun though and hope all turn up, especially at new venue this coming Sunday.

To do a bit of heavy drinking is also known as a "session", well it is in 'ull.

Doesnt matter what it is called the important thing is for people to get there and enjoy themselves.

Osson. You are dead right son. Actually its a North Eastern term for a drink or three exported to the south of England - Hull!
I do think the term music session should be used properly though.
What you do in the Sun and elsewhere is grand - but its not a session.

The other often-used expression 'singaround' doesn't describe these events accurately either. We follow the singaround format, giving everybody a turn, but that turn can be a song or a tune or two (or a poem/monologue or anything else). Musicians will often join in with accompanied songs and tunes. So if it isn't a session and it isn't a singaround, then what is it? Do we need a new name? The only reason to give something a name is to describe it accurately to someone who doesn't know. The people who sing and play in Beverley on a Sunday know what they are getting and look forward eagerly to the next one!

Mind you, me an' 'er will be in Warwick next Sunday.

If it is common currency in the area then call it that.

I've been to sessions wher ethey were run liek a folk club and folk did not join in with the song or the music only in the choruses but common usage called them a session.

Tehe message was clear - this is what is going on - coe and see if you liek it have a beer and join in.

Please find the plot again - I wish I was in Beverley (there msut be asong in there (for a session) or a tune)

Apparently mine hosts are putting on a barrel of real ale for those of us who require it. The pub doesn't normally have handpulled ale on but the experiment over the FF weekend was a success and they are happy to repeat it on a smaller scale for this Sunday.

Where is the session ??? this weekend at just Hodgesons, where the folk festival was held recently, or at both there and The Sun Inn which is more of a conducive atmosphere to the sort of gathering which seems to take place most Sunday afternoons.Also when you get to my age it isn't as far to walk to, and back of course.If anyone knows a shortcut from Lincoln Way area to Hodgesons please let me know?

It is at Hodgson's.

As stated ealier, the Sun is the 2nd, 3rd (and 5th) Sundays of the month. Monk's Walk is the 1st Sunday and Hodgson's is the 4th Sunday - in this case Sunday 24th July.

Lets hope the new man/woman fixes the bogs. There is a constant 2" of water in the gents (not sure where it comes from!) and I am told no paper in the ladies as there is no demand for it.   On Tuesday last the dishwasher upstairs was running and the ceiling vibrated like it was about to collapsE. Otherwise great pub.    I think PUB CO makes a living by turning over landlords and collecting large sums from the new ones for the "goodwill"

The Sun has character and if it's open tomorrow we'll be there.
But we had a phonecall to say it's closing tonight so an arrangement has been made with Oddfellows to have the session there tomorrow.

Yes, this week's Tuesday session was especially eclectic - ranging from traditional harp tunes to The Boomtown Rats. Oh, and I played "Dance On" in memeory of Tony Meehan who died on Monday(but I realised afterwards that he had left the Shads before that particular track was released!)
