If ye want a beer what's porfection indeed,
Ah'll give yes a guide ti fulfillin' yor need
At yem by the fireside, in pub or in bar
The sign of good beer is the fyemous blue star
(and then as above)
It's the strong beer, it's the bottled beer
With the north's biggest sale
For complete satisfaction,

Hi Mark!! This is what I can remember from the time I lived in Toronto, ON, Canada (now I live in Basle, BS, Switzerland): "...all the way down, boy all the way down, Keg Draft Ale, all the way down..."

I've never tried it, since I drink only alcohol-free beer.

I remember from the 60's an ad in the UK that went:
McEwans is the best buy,the best buy the best buy'
McEwans is the best buy,the best buy in beer.

Their ad agency must have spent months scratching their heads to come up with that one, but from these examples none of them seem too original.

my da was the plant doctor for the Carling brewery in Cleveland when I was a kid in the forties, fifties and sixties-It was the beer for the Indians and the Browns games, the only sports besides high school football that mattered there. Da felt a sense of loyalty to his employer. so he would drink no other, and we always had a case or two of the stuff around for an eleven year old to try. Da actually got me a 78 record with the "Hey Mabel" song on one side, and a instrumental march version on the other. The Cleveland joke of the time was "Hey Mabel, get off the table, the money's for the beer!" . Not, unfortunately, on the recording....

Chicago's Edelweiss beer had a jingle to a piece of classical music that Stephen Barr partly remembered above, but there was more to it. I haven't heard it in more than the sixty years since I left the Chicao area (Elmhurst, actually), but when my wife and I went into a movie theater the other day, the classical music was playing and most the words came instantly to mind:
Drink Edelweiss, it tastes so nice,
It tastes so nice, drink Edelweiss.
To quench your thirst, remember first,
Drink good old Edelweiss

The second "It tastes so nice" may have been another phrase, but it escapes me

Ok, this is an old one:

Hi all ye lads and lasses!
Lift high your Tech filled glasses!
Drink sparkling golden Tech!
Tech the bonny beer!

The tune was "Scotland the Brave", or at least part of it. Carnegie Mellon University was once called Carnegie Institute of Technology, Tech for short. Tech had a damn fine pipe band. (As does CMU.) ergo the Scottish theme. The song was sung by a well formed blond cartoon lady, in kilt and tam o shanter. As far as I know the beer is no longer made, but if your ever on Carson Street you could ask at Piper's Pub.

Okay, it's not a jingle. But I remember an animated commercial for Gunther beer. I saw this in Washington D.C. in either the late '50s or, possibly, the early '60s (the '50s is more likely.)

A maestro/conductor is standing on a podium, in front of an orchestra, and he says "Give me a G." Immediately, a bottle of Gunther beer appears in the air.

He says "Give me a G major", and a bottle of Gunther beer with a military hat on appears in the air.

He says "Give me a G minor", and a bottle of Gunther beer with a miner's hardhat and lamp on appears in the air.

He says "Give me a G on a scale", and a bottle of Gunther beer standing on one side of a pan balance appears.

Increasingly frustrated, he says "Give me a G I can hear", and a bottle of Gunther beer appears in the air, slowly pouring into a mug (we hear the glug, glug, glug sound as it pours.)

Admitting defeat, the conductor leaves the symphony hall and trudges down the street, muttering to himself "I ask for a G ... they give me a G ..."), and he notices that he is standing right outside a tavern. So he says "Why not?"

He goes into the tavern and says "Give me a nice, cool G!", and the bartender and all of the other patrons turn to him and hum a G chord. I think he faints at that point.

I couldn't find it on YouTube. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Don

It is becoming obvious (to me)- over the past half-decade....that while we may share a common language the Brits and the Yanks are more than a "pond" apart.

I would suggest - that the Mudcat use the already established URL origins and denote posters from the UK and posters from the good ol' U.S.A.

It is more than one time that one or the other of us have been drawn into threads that are clearly not related to anything within 3000 miles of our country.

Up above, Earl posted this jingle:
Oh brew me no brew with artificial bubbles
    Those carbonated beers of today
But Utica Club will still take the trouble
To age beer the natural way
    Utica Club, UC

At song circle last night, somebody sang a Utica Club jingle that sounded almost like the tune of "Away With Rum," and had the line, "We don't brew with artificial bubbles." Anybody know this one?
It's unclear in this Wikipedia article whethere Utica Club is still being sold. The brewery was damaged in a fire in May, 2008. Partial operations were moved to other locations, but it sounds like this beer may be hard to find nowadays.

Addition to the above:

Posted and then remembered a beer commercial I got sent by a friend for Miller's Beer.

A guy walking acrossa field with an obviously Scottish Loch in the background. He walks past the camera and then steps back into shot and says:
"When I told my friends I was going to Auchtermuchtie, they said:
    'Wear the Fox hat'!"

If you say that last bit quickly it sounds like "Where the f***'s that?"

No jingle but another bloody clever ad

Some goodies in there.
But the two that stand out are the "Watney's Red Barrel" which reminds me of the hilarious Monty Python sketch where the bloke goes into the travel agent to order a package tour and spends the next twenty minutes droning on and on and on and on and on and on and on ...................... you get the picture.......................about previous ones and the Watney's Red Barrel line crops up regularly.

The other was Pabst Blue Ribbon - again a comedy link - Wayne & Schuster who did a brilliant sketch called "A Shakespearean Ball Game" where the entire dialogue was conducted in Shakespearian idiom and using quotes from, as well as alluding to, Shakespearean plays

Foolestroupe reminded me of the alcoholic lemonade - - - it was indeed called "Two Dogs" and it was pretty good. Stopped drinking it for a while and then when I went looking for it once - couldn't locate it and then over time forgot about it - bloody nice drop.

However we have two offerings from Australia:

A common and long-running ad for Victoria Bitter (I hate the stuff) has this "poem" that goes sort of "You can get it Towing, You can get it mowing, you can get it milking a cow - -- matter of fact; I've got it now. A big thirst needs a big cold beer and the best cold beer is Vic! Victoria Bitter."
Crap beer but an emotive ad.

Best beer commercial of all time has GOT to be the latest one promoting 'Carlton Draught' beer.

It is a 'chant' to the tune and rhytm of "O Fortuna" from Orffs 'Carmina Burana'

"This is an ad . . . .
It's a big ad . . . .
This is a ve - - e - - ry b - i - g a- - - - - d!
etc.
It involves "hundreds" of people rushing together in robes of differing colours - some as a human figure - others in the shape of a glass of beer complete with 'head' and finally as the ad comes to a close the figure has its arm upraised with the glass in hand and the beer 'pouring out of the glass, into the open mouth, down the throat and then 'swirling around' down in the 'stomach'

Incredibly clever and well done.

BTW - all praise to 'moongoddess' for bringing this subject up in relation to "America's Team" the Boston Red Sox. Was 'drafted as a supprter by an American friend about 4 years ago and was just as delighted as she when we won the World Series - especially as we knocked off the Yankees to do it!

Thousands of years ago*, when I was but a smallish child in Chicago, I used to regularly hear a "singing commercial" for Edelweiss beer:

Drink Edelweiss
It tastes so nice
(forgot this line)
Drink Edelweiss

Which I revised to:

Drink Edelweiss
Kills rats and mice
It's worth the price
Drink Edelweiss

As I recall, Edelweiss was a local (Chicago) brand, and was still
being produced by the large brewery that acquired the label into the (nineteen) nineties.

Don
