Da felt a sense of loyalty to his employer. so he would drink no other, and we always had a case or two of the stuff around for an eleven year old to try. Da actually got me a 78 record with the "Hey Mabel" song on one side, and a instrumental march version on the other. The Cleveland joke of the time was "Hey Mabel, get off the table, the money's for the beer!" . Not, unfortunately, on the recording.... |

I haven't heard it in more than the sixty years since I left the Chicao area (Elmhurst, actually), but when my wife and I went into a movie theater the other day, the classical music was playing and most the words came instantly to mind: Drink Edelweiss, it tastes so nice, It tastes so nice, drink Edelweiss. Tech the bonny beer! The tune was "Scotland the Brave", or at least part of it. Carnegie Mellon University was once called Carnegie Institute of Technology, Tech for short. Tech had a damn fine pipe band. (As does CMU.) ergo the Scottish theme. The song was sung by a well formed blond cartoon lady, in kilt and tam o shanter. As far as I know the beer is no longer made, but if your ever on Carson Street you could ask at Piper's Pub. |

I saw this in Washington D.C. in either the late '50s or, possibly, the early '60s (the '50s is more likely.) A maestro/conductor is standing on a podium, in front of an orchestra, and he says "Give me a G." Immediately, a bottle of Gunther beer appears in the air. He says "Give me a G major", and a bottle of Gunther beer with a military hat on appears in the air. He says "Give me a G minor", and a bottle of Gunther beer with a miner's hardhat and lamp on appears in the air. He says "Give me a G on a scale", and a bottle of Gunther beer standing on one side of a pan balance appears. Increasingly frustrated, he says "Give me a G I can hear", and a bottle of Gunther beer appears in the air, slowly pouring into a mug (we hear the glug, glug, glug sound as it pours.) Admitting defeat, the conductor leaves the symphony hall and trudges down the street, muttering to himself "I ask for a G ... they give me a G ..."), and he notices that he is standing right outside a tavern. So he says "Why not?" He goes into the tavern and says "Give me a nice, cool G!", and the bartender and all of the other patrons turn to him and hum a G chord. I think he faints at that point. It is more than one time that one or the other of us have been drawn into threads that are clearly not related to anything within 3000 miles of our country.

But the two that stand out are the "Watney's Red Barrel" which reminds me of the hilarious Monty Python sketch where the bloke goes into the travel agent to order a package tour and spends the next twenty minutes droning on and on and on and on and on and on and on ...................... you get the picture.......................about previous ones and the Watney's Red Barrel line crops up regularly. The other was Pabst Blue Ribbon - again a comedy link - Wayne & Schuster who did a brilliant sketch called "A Shakespearean Ball Game" where the entire dialogue was conducted in Shakespearian idiom and using quotes from, as well as alluding to, Shakespearean plays Foolestroupe reminded me of the alcoholic lemonade - - - it was indeed called "Two Dogs" and it was pretty good. Stopped drinking it for a while and then when I went looking for it once - couldn't locate it and then over time forgot about it - bloody nice drop. However we have two offerings from Australia: A common and long-running ad for Victoria Bitter (I hate the stuff) has this "poem" that goes sort of "You can get it Towing, You can get it mowing, you can get it milking a cow - -- matter of fact; I've got it now. A big thirst needs a big cold beer and the best cold beer is Vic! Victoria Bitter." Crap beer but an emotive ad. Best beer commercial of all time has GOT to be the latest one promoting 'Carlton Draught' beer. It is a 'chant' to the tune and rhytm of "O Fortuna" from Orffs 'Carmina Burana' "This is an ad . . . . It's a big ad . . . . This is a ve - - e - - ry b - i - g a- - - - - d! etc. It involves "hundreds" of people rushing together in robes of differing colours - some as a human figure - others in the shape of a glass of beer complete with 'head' and finally as the ad comes to a close the figure has its arm upraised with the glass in hand and the beer 'pouring out of the glass, into the open mouth, down the throat and then 'swirling around' down in the 'stomach' Incredibly clever and well done. BTW - all praise to 'moongoddess' for bringing this subject up in relation to "America's Team" the Boston Red Sox. Was 'drafted as a supprter by an American friend about 4 years ago and was just as delighted as she when we won the World Series - especially as we knocked off the Yankees to do it! |
