I see from the above mentioned list that F.X. Matt no longer makes Utica Club. I misspent a lot of my college days at the Utica Club brewery in their replica 1890's bar drinking that crap and pumping quarters into the antique music machines. The beer they served was somehow far better than the stuff that made it into the cans and bottles. They also gave us Billy Beer, made in honor of Pres. Carter's late brother, which is probably one of the reasons they went under.

A friend of mine once told me that the New Lost City Ramblers did the music for a Stroh's Beer TV ad. Does anyone know if there's any truth to that rumor?

WHAT??? A site like that and they don't even have the Kona Brewing Co. or Mehana Brewing Co., (on opposite sides of the Big Island of Hawaii)???? Come on, guys, Hawaii's been in the U.S. since 1959. And the beer is good!

One of my favorite beers is Yuengling Porter, brewed in Pottsville, PA (America's oldest brewery!) But I don't know if Yuengling has/had any commercials.

The original advertising jingle extolling the 'virtues' of keg beer. It is presurised, homogenised, fined, and served under pressure. It is designed to be capable of being transported great distances with no notable change in the taste (worse luck)

A classic number in the New Orleans brass-band repertoire is "When We Danced at the Mardi Gras." When it's played by a brass band, of course, it's an instrumental and you don't hear the lyrics aned hence don't hear the title. A given tune can become fairly familiar even to a person who never learns its title.

When I first came to New Orleans, I'd hear the beginning of this song and think they were playing "My beer is Rheingold the dry beer." The first line or two of the two tunes are virtually identical, but the tunes become significantly different for the rest of the verse.

It was about 15-20 years before I fnally learned the true title (and heard the lyrics) of this song that I always associated with the big Rheingol sign above the center field clubhouse at the Polo Grounds.

I am the proud owner of a Dr. Seuss illustrated "Gangway For Gansett!" beer tray with an Indian Chief on some sort of a prototype skateboard rolling downhill past a cat while holding a tray with a cold frosty mug and a bottle on it in one hand. He used to illustrate their ads before he became huge in children's book sales and no longer needed that sort of revenue. It might explain, however, how he saw all that stuff on Mulberry Street, though, and how hegot himself "On Beyond Zebra" on occaision. If he'd stuck with it,in later years, maybe Horton would have heard the Who on a brewery sponsored 10th annual farewell tour. (Come to think of it, Opera perfected those multiple farewell tours long before Rock, so that when Townshend co-opted Opera, it probably came with the territory......but I digress).

I used to drink Naragansett Porter out of longnecks when I'd go up to Maine. They were only American brewery I knew of back in those pre- MicroBrew days (and nights) that bottled the stuff, which I'd only known about from all those Irish drinking songs.

Alas, I am Leinenkugel-less, since I haven't been able to spend a couple weeks with my mother in Milwaukee for the past two years and bring home "provisions" (cheese curds, candy raisins, Usinger's summer sausage, and Leinenkugel).

I was watching a Red Sox game the other night and remembered back to the 60's when Narragansett Beer was the official beer of the Red Sox. Curt Gowdy would start each game with HI neighbor......, and the crowd would shout back, "have a Gansett".

There was a song that went:

"Hi neighbor, have a Gansett.
It always keeps its golden promise.
Each glass is as refreshing as the first.
It's quite a beer, that Gansett beer.
Hi neighbor, have ANOTHER Gansett,
"Cause it's the beer brewed just right for drinking.

The brewery, located in RI, closed in 1981 and so went the 20 year relationship between Narragansett beer and the Red Sox.

As we say in RI, "And there it was, gone."
