Subject: Obit: Winnie Winston From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 20 Jul 05 - 05:24 PM Jonathan Greene of Gnomon Press just gave the news of the death of Winnie Winston, June 12, 2005, in New Zealand where he has made his home for the past ten years. He was 64, was well known, loved and respected, from the folk revival years ('50s and '60s) to these times and beyond. Close friend of the New Lost City Ramblers, Bill Monroe(played in Monroe's band for awhile) and many others in the field of traditional and old-time music. I haven't found any other Mudcat thread announcing Winnie's death; my apologies if I have missed it and this is a repeat, but wanted to be sure that all his old friends know of his passing. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Winnie Winston From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 20 Jul 05 - 05:36 PM Back in 1961, I took one guitar lesson from Winnie. He was still in high school, then. Things didn't click, although he was a sweet kid, so I went to Dave Van Ronk, instead. Sorry to hear of his passing.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Obit: Winnie Winston From: SaulBro Date: 11 Aug 05 - 12:57 AM Art, I had no trouble getting the article by clicking "Click here to read", downloading it now: a 5mb + pdf file. Maybe your browser is not set to download pdf files. Let me know if you want me to email it to you as an attachment, though at 5mb, I will have to have a spare hour or two with my dialup connection. Subject: RE: Obit: 'Winnie' Winston in NZ From: SaulBro Date: 11 Aug 05 - 01:13 AM Winnie was a fantastic musician, and much more...as you can see by the accomplishments on his website. He was one of my regular accompanists on banjo and pedal steel guitar for many years when he lived here in Philadelphia, and he played on my 1977 album "Travels With Broudy". I got to visit and play with him while on tour in New Zealand in 1999, and was glad to see him so happy in his new home. My obit will be in the next issue of Sing Out! magazine. There will be a memorial gathering for him at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he had taught for many years, on Saturday 8 October 2005. If you'd like further details, you can email me at saulbro at aol dot com. Saul Broudy |
