Subject: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 27 Jul 05 - 06:19 AM A woman [not me] I know woke me up to talk to me about how her man keeps sending mixed messages about whether he wants to stay in that relationship or not. Another woman [not me]-let's call her "faithful wife" telephoned me yesterday and talked for more than an hour about whether or not she should leave her cheating husband. Back & forth, and back & forth she went-mostly saying why she shouldn't leave...And this indecision has been going on for almost a year now. BTW, "cheating husband" cheats alot and recently "cheating husband " told "faithful wife" her that he wanted a divorce, but two days later he changed his mind. So here I am awake because of the phone call from friend #1. And here I come to Mudcat justa reading the threads when I get this great idea- "Why not start a thread on songs about indecision in love or indecision about other things. There must be some songs about that-or, at least, I think so. Well, maybe not. So I first typed "indecision" in the Search & Knowledge box. But I only found one parody song with the word "indecision" in one verse. So I decided to start a thread on songs about indecision. But then I thought I'd better not. And then before I gave it another thought, I quickly hit the submit button-like this- |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 27 Jul 05 - 06:25 AM Here's that song from the Digital Tradition that has the verse about indecision. Song # 0.7742 I'VE BEEN RAILING AT THE WORKLOAD (Michael & Meredith Bergman & Steven H. Miller) I've been railing at the workload All the livelong day I've been railing at the workload But it will not go away. Can't you see the deadline coming? Feel the tension climb! Can't you hear the client screaming, "No more overtime!" Bossman don't you blow Bossman don't you blow Bossman don't you blow your cor-or-ork, Bossman don't you know Bossman don't you know Everybody feels the torque. Someone's indecision is showing "Start all over at square one!" Somebody disgruntled is going Home to get a tommy gun. A-singing "Blat! Splat! Rata-ti-tat-tat! Scatter you suckers, ru-u-u-n Blat! Splat! Rata-ti-tat-tat! Strummin' on my tommy gun!" |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 27 Jul 05 - 06:35 AM I remember this verse from a song recorded by a singing/musician group named "War". [I can't figure out what genre of music "War" performed {performs?}. Are they "Jazz", or "R&B" or "Folk"??? Nah they're not "Folk", at least I don't think so. I can't decide]. But I remember this one verse from one of that group's CDs. My guestimate is that this came out sometime around the 1980s or maybe it was the 1970s...I can't remember when, but here's the verse anyway. First you say you do and then you don't. Then you say you will and then you won't. You're undecided now so what'er you gonna do do do? -snip- Does anyone know this group, and the rest of this song? Thanks in advance, Azizi |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Le Scaramouche Date: 27 Jul 05 - 06:39 AM Oh, the grand old Duke of York, He had ten thousand men, He marched them up the hill, And he marched them down again.... This is more or less from memory, then there's the bit about marching them half-way up the hill where they were neither up nor down. |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: The Beast of Farlington Date: 27 Jul 05 - 07:57 AM War were a funk band. That's all I know. |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:09 AM Thanks to The Beast of Farlington, we are now taking a station break from being indecisive to hear {well at least "read" some info about the Funk group "War": War - The Low Riders by Jose Munoz War evolved from a Los Angeles band called The Creators. They were a r&b cover band created in 1962 by Howard Scott ( guitar & vocals) and Harold Brown (percussion & vocals), and included Lonnie Jordan (keyboards & vocals), B.B. Dickerson (bass & vocals) and Charles Miller (flute & saxophone). They broke up when Howard Scott was drafted and briefly reunited when Scott was discharged two years later. A new band called Night Shift was formed in 1968 by Scott, Brown, Jordan and Miller, and added new bassist Peter Rosen. B.B. Dickerson returned when Peter Rosen died of a drug overdose, and Papa Dee Allen (keyboards & vocals) also joined the band. They ended up becoming backup band for football player Deacon Jones in his brief musical career. The band was heard rehearsing by Jerry Goldstein, a producer and songwriter. He introduced them to Eric Burdon (formerly of The Animals), and would go on to produce with War. Burdon brought Lee Oskar (harmonica, percussion & vocals) to the band and toured with War in 1969. In 1970, "Eric Burdon Declares War" was released and went gold. The single "Spill The Wine" became a hit and went to #3 on the pop charts. War recorded two more albums with Burdon, "Black Man's Burdon" and "Love Is All Around" which wasn't released until 1976. In 1971 during the middle of a European tour, Eric Burdon quit touring claiming that he was burned out. War completed the tour without him to sell-out crowds, much to their delight. War permanently split with Burdon and signed a record deal with UA. In 1971, they released "All Day Music" and followed with albums "The World Is A Ghetto", "Deliver The Word", "War Live", and "Why Cant We Be Friends?" which made them a mainstay in the '70"s. War had a unique sound, a combination of funk, r&b, gospel and latin jazz (not to mention the harmonica of Lee Oskar and saxophone of Charles Miller) that had wide appeal that crossed racial lines. Their music addressed the issues in many urban communities and also had positive messages which were inspirational to many. "All Day Music" was the first album that I heard by War. "Slippin' Into Darkness" was my favorite with it's hypnotic rhythm and vocals. It became their first hit on their own. " All Day Music " and "Nappy Head" were also popular among fans. War's next album "The World Is A Ghetto" became a huge success. The title song painted a picture of despair and hope found in the inner city, and that "...peace and love are the cure...". It meant to me that problems that faced minorities in urban areas were global, and basically the same as those in many communities around the world (hunger, poverty, political oppression,etc.). "Four Cornered Room", "Beetles In The Bog" and "City, Country, City" were favorites with their blues, gospel and jazz feel to them. "The Cisco Kid" was a funky song aimed at its latino audience that made its way to black radio (as were "Low Rider" and "Cinco de Mayo"). The album "Deliver The Word" brought us "Me & Baby Brother .wav file 30 K", one of their funkiest songs, which was influenced by Sly & The Family Stone. "Deliver The Word" was a soulful ballad that is among my favorites. Their next album, "Why Can't We Be Friends?" brought two hits. It produced their classic "Low Rider" , and the title song which questioned racial separatism and called for unity among the races. War went on to make more albums and hits including "Galaxy" and "Peace Sign" from their last album." Soul Patrol-War -snip- I'm pretty sure that the song "Undecided Now' {or some such title} was on War's album, "All Day Music". But then again, it could have been on their album "The World Is A Ghetto", since I had both of them... I'm not really sure which one... |

Subject: Lyr Add: UNDECIDED (Sid Robin / Charlie Shavers) From: rich-joy Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:17 AM for AZIZI : UNDECIDED First you say you do, and then you don't And then you say you will, that's when you won't You're undecided now, so what are you gonna do? Now you wanna play, and then it's "no" And when you say you'll stay, that's when you go You're undecided now, so what are you gonna do? I've been sittin' on the fence And it doesn't make much sense Coz you keep me in suspense - and you know it Then you promise to return When you don't I really burn Well I guess I'll never learn - and I show it! If you've got a heart, and if you're kind Then don't keep us apart - make up your mind You're undecided now, so what are you gonna do? Now if you don't love me, I wish you'd say so I love you so much, honey - I just got to know I'm just a fool for you : What are you gonna do?! by Sid Robin / Charlie Shavers - 1939 : from the singing of Ella Fitzgerald / Irma Curry ... Cheers! R-J |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:34 AM There's always "The Hesitation Blues", although that song may be too assertive for this thread. Now what's that song about the old houndog too tired to stir? Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:36 AM Thanks, rich-joy!! That's the very song I was thinking of. **** Guest, sorry, but I don't understand your post. Maybe you would care to explain. But, then again, maybe you wouldn't. LOL!! Azizi |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: GUEST Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:44 AM I'm too busy procastinating over how to extract myself from a situation to write a song about indecision. But the fact that I am writing songs again should tell me I am already out of it in my mind. But indecision can be a real bummer, in this case because after being given the Bum's Rush and turning it round I now can't figure the words to say, and say it nicely. Ah maybe thats a different subject. I'll think about it tomorrow. But if I could write a song about it it would be a mishmash, by definition. Doesn't Martin Carthy sing a song about a guy who dithers in the marriage proposal stakes only to pop-up after the nuptuals saying "here I am" and she say "too late"? |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Snuffy Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:51 AM Azizi Captain Indecisive is Les Barker's best poem. Or is it Cosmo the Fairly Accurate Knife Thrower? No, it's Jason and the Arguments Oh no it's not Oh yes it is |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 27 Jul 05 - 09:02 AM Hey Snuffy! Thanks for that info. I guess I got to get with the culture thingy cause I never heard of Les Barker before. Or at least I don't think so. **** Guest 27 Jul 05 - 08:44 AM. Are you the same Guest as 27 Jul 05 - 08:13 AM? You can see how this "Guest" tag can get somewhat confusing. And posting as Guest {with no other name} on a thread about indecision, can get even more mishmashy {to borrow your word and change it just a tad}. Anyway, Guest Songwriter {if I might call you that}, I hope you get things sorted out soon and you get back to composing songs-about procrastination or whatever. Positive vibrations, Azizi |

Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Le Scaramouche Date: 27 Jul 05 - 10:03 AM Didn't Eric Burdon also produce Hendrix for a while? The Clash have a terrific song (with bad Spanish) about indecision in a relationship "Should I Stay or Should I Go". Darling you gotta let me know Should I stay or should I go? If you say that you are mine I'll be here till the end of time So you got to let me know Should I stay or should I go? Always tease tease tease Simpre - coquetiando y enganyando You're happy when I'm on my knees Me arrodilla y esta feliz One day is fine, next day is black Un dias bien el otro negro So if you want me off your back Al rededar en tu espalda Well come on and let me know Me tienes que desir Should I stay or should I go? me debi ur i qye darne Should I stay or should I go now? Should I stay or should I go now? If I go there will be trouble An' if I stay it will be double So come on and let me know This indescision's bugging me Esta undescision me molesta If you don't want me set me free Si no queres, librame Exactly who'm I'm supposed to be Diga me que tengo ser Don't you know which clothes even fit me? Saves que robas me queurda? Come on and let me know Me tienes que desir Should I cool it or should I blow? Me dobo ir o quedarme? Should I stay or should I go now?! Yo me frio o lo sophio? Subject: Lyr Add: IF YOU GOTTA GO, GO NOW (Bob Dylan) From: JennyO Date: 27 Jul 05 - 01:21 PM Here's one I enjoyed back in the sixties - by Bob Dylan, but I liked the Manfred Mann version. It's not really what you'd call folk, so I wasn't sure if I should post it, but then I thought - what the heck, I'll be decisive and post it. IF YOU GOTTA GO, GO NOW (Bob Dylan) Listen to me, baby I'm tryin' to make you see That I want to be with you girl If you want to be with me But if you gotta go, it's all right But if you gotta go, go now Or else you gotta stay all night I am just a poor boy, baby Tryin' to connect But I don't want you thinkin' Oh that I ain't got any respect But if you gotta go, it's all right But if you gotta go, go now Or else you gotta stay all night Now I'm not tryin' to question you To take part in any quiz It's just that I don't have a watch An' you keep askin' me what time it is But if you gotta go, well it's all right But if you gotta go, go now Or else you gotta stay all night Now I don't want to make you give Anything you never gave before It's just that I'll be sleepin' soon It'll be too dark for you to find the door But if you gotta go, well it's all right But if you gotta go, go now Or else you gotta stay all night |
Subject: Lyr Add: DID YOU EVER HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND From: PoppaGator Date: 27 Jul 05 - 01:35 PM "If You Gotta Go" ~ one of my very favorite early Dylan songs, and a regular feature of my busking repertoire back in the early 70s. Also: How 'bout "DID YOU EVER HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND" by folkie-turned-rocker (and autoharpist) John Sebastian and his band The Lovin' Spoonful? Did you ever have to make up your mind Pick up on one and leave the other behind It's not often easy and not often kind Did you ever have to make up your mind Did you ever have to finally decide Say yes to one and let the other one ride There's so many changes and tears you must hide Did you ever have to finally decide Sometimes there's one with big blue eyes, cute as a bunny With hair down to here, and plenty of money And just when you think she's that one in the world You heart gets stolen by some mousey little girl And then you know you'd better make up your mind... Sometimes you really dig a girl the moment you kiss her And then you get distracted by her older sister When in walks her father and takes you a line And says, "You better go home, son, and make up your mind" And then you bet you'd better finally decide... |

Should I actually commit myself, or should I just wait for the authorities to do it? |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Le Scaramouche Date: 27 Jul 05 - 02:20 PM "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" was done by Fairport, as the very memorable Si Tu Dois Partir. "Blow Away the Morning Dew" is about a woman tricking a man, no indecision there. |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 27 Jul 05 - 09:06 PM The Mitchell Trio recorded a song, Which Hat Shall I Wear? It wasn't actually about fashion accessories, but race relations. Written by Fred Hellerman. Which hat shall I wear, the red or the blue one? Which hat shall I wear to the PTA? The blue one's a new one, The red one's becoming, Mary, tell me, which shall I wear? Or something like that - not easy dredging this stuff up from 1965. Tom Paxton couldn't help but wonder where he was bound. |
Subject: Lyr Add: HELLO GOODBYE (from The Beatles) From: JennyO Date: 28 Jul 05 - 10:01 AM I thought of a song to post here hours ago, but the Cat was down. I thought it was about indecision, but now I'm not so sure - especially when I found a bit of extra information about it on this site http://www.iamthebeatles.com/article1165.html Not sure how accurate the information is - I didn't think their version of the lyrics was very accurate so I got them from another site. Anyway, the song certainly is full of contradictions. I'm speaking of the Beatles song, "Hello Goodbye", written by Paul McCartney. I'll post the information first, then the song. See what you think. Paul's friend, Alistair Taylor who was visiting McCartney, asked Paul one day how he wrote his many songs, and how he came up with his ideas. Paul took him into his dining room to give him a demonstration of his hand-carved harmonium. As an experiment, Paul asked Taylor to shout out the opposite of whatever he sang, such as black and white, yes and no, hello and goodbye, etc. From this, the song was born. Lennon hated the song, and viewed it as an inconsequential song of McCartney's, saying it was "three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions." What further infuriated Lennon was that his "I Am The Walrus," was issued as the B-side to McCartney's A-side "Hello Goodbye". Hello Goodbye Writer, lead vocal: Paul McCartney You say yes, I say no. You say stop and I say go go go, oh no. You say goodbye and I say hello Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello. I say high, you say low. You say why and I say I don't know, oh no. You say goodbye and I say hello (Hello goodbye hello goodbye) hello hello (Hello goodbye) I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello (Hello goodbye hello goodbye) hello hello (Hello goodbye) I don't know why you say goodbye (Hello goodbye) I say goodbye. Why why why why why why do you say goodbye goodbye, oh no? You say goodbye and I say hello Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello. You say yes (I say yes) I say no (But I may mean no). You say stop (I can stay) and I say go go go (Till it's time to go oh), oh no. You say goodbye and I say hello Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say goodbye Hello hello I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello hello. Hela heba helloa (Cha cha), hela... |

But then again, there's so many songs that were posted that I didn't know about before which are awfully good-if "good" can be "awfully". You know what I mean. Don't you? On second thought, I can't decide which song I like the best. |
Subject: RE: Songs About Indecision From: Azizi Date: 28 Jul 05 - 08:04 PM The sentence structure in my last post is a demonstration of my confusion. When I wrote "there's so many songs that were posted that I didn't know about before which are awfully good" I didn't mean that it was awfully good that I didn't know many of the songs that were posted [in this thread]. I meant that many of the songs are awfully good... At least that's what I think I meant. It beats the heck out of me how something can be both awful and good. Isn't that an oxymoron [which is probably the wrong way to spell that word. Or is it? Who knows? I'm not gonna waste energy on it, cause I have other things to waste my energy on-if I could only decide which comes first the chicken or the egg. [That remark is suppose to convey some heavy duty esoteric meaning. I'm not sure about what-but I thought it sounded good so what the heck!] Azizi |
