Subject: Isabeau s'y promene and She's Like a Swallow From: munwai@sfu.ca Date: 22 Feb 97 - 05:06 AM Hi I'm looking for good quality traditional recordings of Isabeau S'y Promene and She's Like a Swallow. The first is a Quebecois folk song and the second one, I believe originates in Newfoundland. Can anyone recommend some recordings? I'm interested in recordings which are traditional in style so, please, nothing like Ashley MacIsaac's folk-punk amalgamations. Please email me privately with suggestions. Thank you for your attention Mun Wai munwai@sfu.ca |

Subject: RE: Isabeau s'y promene and She's Like a Swallow From: Daniel Date: 28 Feb 97 - 11:07 PM There's a version of Isabeau s'y promene on the Tannahill Weavers' 'Live at Spirit Square', if this is sufficiently traditional. If not, please disregard. |

Subject: RE: Isabeau s'y promene and She's Like a Swallow From: Vinland Date: 08 Apr 03 - 08:42 PM 'She's Like a Swallow' is a Newfoundland folk song, though it was derived from several songs of British origin. The distinctive melody and swallow simile are unique to Newfoundland. The song was first collected by Maude Karpeles in the 20s and arranged by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Because of it was widely taught in the English school system, 'She's Like a Swallow' was thought to originate there. My favourite recording of the song is by Pamela Morgan and Anita Best, on their 'Colour of Amber' CD. Their web site is: http://www.ambermusic.ca/ - Vinland |
Subject: RE: Isabeau s'y promene and She's Like a Swallow From: GUEST,Béatrice Date: 16 Apr 03 - 02:25 PM "Isabeau s'y promène" existe aussi dans le répertoire gallo (la langue parlée en haute bretagne). la dernière phrase du refrain (la fois où je l'ai entendue chanté) était un peu différente: tout au long du ruisseau. |

Subject: RE: 'Isabeau S'y Promene' and 'She's Like a Swallow' From: Monique Date: 23 May 22 - 05:40 PM It may have been either as the theme is the same, i.e. a naive young girl deceived by a young man (who doesn't say "thank you for the nice moment", nor does he ask "how much do I owe you?" either!) She's Like a Swallow by Cara Dillon, She's Like a Swallow by Dara Schindelka, Isabeau s'y promène by Roch Voisine, a variant by Malicorne. This is the version I learned as a child but my mother would sing "Je pleure mon cœur volage que vous m'avez volé" (I mourn/weep for my inconstant heart that you stole from me) while this version says "Je pleure mon pucelage..." (I mourn/weep for my maidenhead..."). Sometimes it says "Je pleure mon avantage" (... my advantage) which is the very same thing anyway. |
