Subject: Hull musicians From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:02 PM I'm a female 'folk' musician living in Hull, just wondering how many others agree with me that the scene is too male dominated, and single female performers can feel threatened by the 'boys club' atmosphere? My main complaint is that I have been looking for musicians to try and get a small combo/duo together for ages, but most of the (male) musicians have seen it just as an opportunity to try and get off with me. This has been a big problem, and one particular experience led to me hardly picking up my fiddle for the last 2 years. What do others think? Is this just bad luck? Should I keep trying, because I've just about given up. |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: ET Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:08 PM There is a Session each Tuesday night at the Sun Pub opposite Beverley Minster which is 50% + female. I'm not sure about the combo bit but the music there is a real mix and there are, on some nights 3 or 4 fiddle players. Its from 8.30 |

Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST,angry nonmember Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:26 PM Hi. Villan I made a mistake - not used to this forum lark - I posted the Female Musicians in Hull thread earlier, went online later and couldn't find it, thought it'd been taken off cos of the swear words, and posted this polite version! Anyway cheers to who posted the info about the Sun pub, I have heard about this one before, and I love the pub. Might give it a try sometime, the only prob is that I don't drive so would have to try and find someone who might give me a lift. Onwards and upwards though. |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: Leadfingers Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:45 PM Hi angry non-member . I am also NOT in Hull and am (Sorry) male but I do know some of the musos who play at the Sun on a regular basis and I would like to say I think they are a lovely crowd of guys AND gals . They are well worth checking out , and you MAY even find some who are interested in forming a group ! |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 05 - 11:30 PM Sorry - the latest census data reveals there are no living musicains - in Hull. |

Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: Paco Rabanne Date: 11 Aug 05 - 10:23 AM Two years is a long time to put down your instrument over unwanted amorous intentions, I usually give in after five minutes!!! Seriously though, there are tons of non- amourous events in Hull/Beverley. |

Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: Leadfingers Date: 11 Aug 05 - 11:53 AM In My Not Very Humble Opinion , the Big Tits seem to be mostly anonymous guests ! |

Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: Amos Date: 11 Aug 05 - 01:06 PM ANM: Well, if you give up it certainly is not going tohappen, whereas if you change your operating basis, it might happen. Your call. A |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST,Angry nonmember Date: 11 Aug 05 - 01:17 PM What do you mean by my operating basis? What are you suggesting I do. |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 11 Aug 05 - 02:42 PM You could try 'The Bash' at the King Billy in Cottingham each Sunday from 8.30pm. This is an open mic night rather than a session but would give you chance to meet other musicians. It's not a folk night as such though folk music is played there along with bits of everything else. Regards - Captain Swing Yes, I know I've posted this on the other thread as well. It's my shameless exploitation of this publicity medium. |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST,Angry nonmember Date: 11 Aug 05 - 03:10 PM The Bash - Does anyone play anything interesting, such as world music there? I like Eastern styles and stuff like that. |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 12 Aug 05 - 09:01 PM But don't those 'Arab' types think you English girls are 'easy'? |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST,Angry Nonmember Date: 12 Aug 05 - 09:20 PM Well, if they do that's their problem. I certainly don't act 'easy'. of course if you want respect you have to earn it, as in everything else in life. Anyway I've just bought a brilliant fiddle book called Fiddling Around the World and I've been practising. Klezmer, Indian and all sorts of styles are in the book. I want to go to some sessions near me, like Tap n Spile and I hear theres an acoustic sesh now at the Linnet and Lark? What are these like at the moment? |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 15 Aug 05 - 11:26 AM Tap and Spile Tuesday night Jane and Sunday night for the acoustic session at Linnet and Lark. You'll be welcomed at both. Thursday nights are also good for various open-mic sessions. |
Subject: RE: Hull musicians From: GUEST,Angry nonmember Date: 15 Aug 05 - 09:18 PM Aha you've sussed out who I am!! Thanks for that info, the Linnet and the Tap are near to where I am moving soon so I think they might be my fave choices for open mic nights. I'd better get back to me packing...I'll get to the Linnet sometime after I've moved in a couple of weeks. |
