Subject: BS: Calvin & Hobbes returns! (in reruns) From: Cool Beans Date: 16 Aug 05 - 09:36 AM They're bringing back Calvin & Hobbes starting Sept. 4 and running through the end of the year. They're not new strips but a selected "best of." So far 200 newspapers have signed up. It's tied in to the publication of the three-volume "Complete Calvin & Hobbes" anthology--list price $150 US, Amazon has it for $94.50. I'm writing a story about the comic strip for my newspaper. If any Catters who are Calvin & Hobbes fans would like to be interviewed, PM me with your name, phone number and a good time to call. Or send the same information to kohn@freepress.com. Thanks! Subject: RE: BS: Calvin & Hobbes returns! (in reruns) From: freightdawg Date: 16 Aug 05 - 07:48 PM Quite possibly one of the best comics ever - I would put C & H in the same class as Pogo, Shoe, BC, and Peanuts to mention some of the best. Delightful characters, always witty and sometimes profound writing, and truly first class artistry. I was truly bummed when the artist decided to retire the little philosopher and his stuffed buddy, but I was glad that it did not go into syndication. Thanks for the heads up. I have several C & H books, so I don't know that I'll spring for the 3 volume anthology. Come to think of it, I'll think I'll just go transmorgify myself! Freightdawg |

Subject: RE: BS: Calvin & Hobbes returns! (in reruns) From: YorkshireYankee Date: 17 Aug 05 - 01:38 PM Excellent! One of the things I really respect Bill Watterson for is his refusal to sell out and do the merchandising thing, which (doubtless) would have earned him millions. I think it would have -- over time -- cheapened Calvin & Hobbes to turn it into a brand. When you see something everywhere (like Peanuts, The Simpsons, Garfield, etc), on everything from clothing to cards to plush toys to ceral boxes, it is no longer as special as it once was; its potency is diminished. I think Watterson has kept his integrity -- and also managed to make sure that Calvin & Hobbes will not become a trite and ubiquitous cliche in years to come. Good for him -- and more power to him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Calvin & Hobbes returns! (in reruns) From: Wesley S Date: 17 Aug 05 - 01:55 PM But Watterson has been ripped off for his efforts. I've seen tons of Calvin T-shirts - all bogus. Not to mention all of the window stickers you see on pickup trucks here that show a little boy fashioned after calvin - pissing on all sorts of things. It's a shame. |
Subject: RE: BS: Calvin & Hobbes returns! (in reruns) From: YorkshireYankee Date: 17 Aug 05 - 04:29 PM I'm sorry to hear this. Haven't seen any of this stuff myself (except for C&H sweats that my brother made -- drew them himself on the clothing (with those special pens), which I think is different; it was done out of love for the 'toon and not to sell to anyone), but I've been over in the UK for the last 7 years, and C&H doesn't seem to have been as popular here. Is this bogus stuff a fairly recent thing? If not, maybe it has something to do with which part(s) of the country we were in (I was in the Midwest -- Detroit area, to be specific). All I can say is that if Watterson had gone the merchandising route, however many t-shirts & stickers you've seen, there'd be millions more out there than there currently are. Even if other people are doing ripoff C&H, it has not been 'diminished' due to overexposure in the way that Garfield, Peanuts etc have been. At least, not in my opinion (for however much or little it's worth!). |

Subject: RE: BS: Calvin & Hobbes returns! (in reruns) From: Nancy King Date: 17 Aug 05 - 07:51 PM Dee-lighted to hear of C & H's return -- even reruns, even for just a year. It's one of my all-time faves. And Homeless, thanks for the link. For some reason it had never occurred to me to look for C & H on line. And the "Hit the Mailbox" game on the page (or maybe it's just an ad) is kinda fun too -- reminds me of that penguin game we all got hooked on a couple of years ago. Nancy |
