Subject: Happy! - Aug 24 (Mrs Brown) From: Abby Sale Date: 24 Aug 05 - 07:19 AM Happy Birthday! Anna Gordon was born 8/24/1747 (d.July 11, 1810) The daughter of Professor Thomas Gordon of King's College, Aberdeen, Anna became fascinated by the old ballads of the Northeast. Up to age 12 (but not later) she had the opportunity to learn many remarkably complete versions from her aunt, the maidservant and others. On 12/13/1788 she married the reverend Andrew Brown of Falkland and thus became Mrs. Brown of Falkland. The three collections of her singing provided 27 of Child's "A" (primary) texts and more for other songs. For some, she is the sole source - for others one of a very rare few. It is often commented that it's a fine thing the collectors preserved her songs but unfortunate that only amateurs were available to badly record her tunes. There's a lesson: Keep them digital recorders handy! Copyright © 2005, Abby Sale - all rights reserved What are Happy's all about? See Clicky |
