From: GUEST,Mary
Date: 01 Sep 05 - 10:54 PM

This is an old song that Lulubelle and Scotty sang.
Here are part of the lyrics.   Any help would be
much appreciated.

I told the whippoorwill, I told the hummingbird,
Just how pretty you smile .
Yes, I told them , all about you .

From: Gene

Penned by the writer of Hank Williams' Lovesick Blues

I TOLD THEM ALL ABOUT YOU
(Cliff Friend)

I told the whippoorwill
I told the daffodil
Just 'bout your pretty smile
Yes I told them all about you

I told the little bird
Every single word
That you said worthwhile
Yes I told them all about you

[next verse doesnt make much sense but was listed this way]

I told that big old melody with shine above
How you roll on big blue eyes and how you could love

Each a little honeybee
Said there's gonna be
A honeymoon for two
Yes I told them all about you

TAG:
I told the whippoorwill ...
Yes, I told them all about you
Yes, I told them all about you

Doc Watson and David Grisman perform a dandy version of "All About You" on their 1997 album "Doc & Dawg."

A good old song which I first heard by Oscar 'Red'Wilson from Ledger, North Carolina. Red who was part of the Ledford family (Probably best known is Steve)was a fiddle player mainly but also sang and played guitar having recorded on King with Wade Mainer's band. Sadly I learend that Red passed away in June of this year leaving a big gap in the musical activities in that area.

I have several impromputu unrehearsed versions of Red performing this with a female partner (whoever happened to be at the session at the time)where they would add a part of another song as a sort of chorus they would sing:

No fooling who do you love
Who are you thinking of
No fooling
No fooling who do you miss
When we hug and kiss
No fooling

Does anybody else know of a version of this song incorporating the above.

Hoot

I've been listening to sound samples:

From Lulu Belle and Scotty:

[S]...nobody knows our little secret.
Darlin', I have kept it well.
[L]Yeah, but I went out among the birds and blossoms
And I told them what you told me not to tell.

[L+S]I told the whippoorwills, told the daffodils,
Just how pretty you smile.
Yes, I told them all about you.
I....

From Donald Peers:

...told the bells
Told my mam and dad and they're mighty glad
Told the preacher man too.
Yes, I told them all about you.
Yes, I told them, told them all about you.

From Hank Penny and His Radio Cowboys:

...every single bird every little word
That you say is worthwhile.
Yes, I told them all about you.
I told the moon and ev'ry little star that shines above
About the way you roll your eyes and how you love.
Each little honeybee knows there's gonna be
Honeymooning for two
'Cause I told them all about you.

dug out record of David Houston's version...
corrected lyrics below

I TOLD THEM ALL ABOUT YOU
As sung by David Houston

I told the whippoorwill, told the daffodil
Just how pretty you smile
Yes, I told them all about you
I told the little bird, ever single word
That you said worthwhile
Yes, I told them all about you

I told that big old mellow moon that shines above
How you roll those big blue eyes and how you could love
Each little honeybee said there's gonna be
A honeymoon for two
Yes, I told them all about you

Repeat all above

TAG:
Yes, I told them all about you
Yes, I told them [fade]

Subject: Lyr Add: ALL ABOUT YOU (from Doc Watson)

I was listening to streaming radio today and heard Doc Watson singing this song. (Hey, ain't RealPlayer great? You can repeat a section of a program over and over until you get it transcribed.) Here's how it went:

(He calls it ALL ABOUT YOU and it's designated "traditional" but I think he's mistaken.)

I told the daffodils.
I told the whippoorwills
Just how pretty you smile.
Yes, I told them all about you.
I told each little bird
Every little single word
That you say is worthwhile.
Yes, I told them all about you.
I told the moon and ev'ry little star that shines above
About the way you roll your pretty eyes and how you love.
Each little honeybee
Knows there's gonna be
A honeymoon for two.
Yes, I told them all about you.

[Repeat two more times, with instrumental interludes between repetitions.]

[As sung by Doc Watson on two albums:
Doc Watson & David Grisman, "Doc & Dawg," Acoustic Disc #25, 1997.
Various Artists, "Acoustic Disc: 100% Handmade Music, Vol. 4," Acoustic Disc #32, 1998.]

When I beamed up the words to "All About You," the chorus & 2d verse's atoms got scattered through out the universe. I don't know where they went. I'm new at this. Here's the chorus:

I told the moon and every little star that shines above
How the way you roll your eyes and how you love.
Each little honeybee
Knows there's gonna be
A honeymoon for two.
Yes, I told them all about you.

VERSE 2: I told every one I know
That I love you so,
And I want you for mine.
Yes, I told them all about you.
'N' they say it's gonna be
Only you and me
Till the end of time,
Yes, I told them all about you.

The phrasing on this song is kind of tricky, But I really like it,

Subject: Lyr Add: I TOLD THEM ALL ABOUT YOU (from D Peers)
From: Jim Dixon

My transcription of the recording at YouTube:

I TOLD THEM ALL ABOUT YOU
As sung by Donald Peers*

I told the whippoorwill,
Told the daffodil,
How pretty you smile.
I told them all about you.
I told each little bird
Every single word
You say is worthwhile.
Yes, I told them all about you.
I told the sun and every star that shines above
About the way you roll your eyes and how you love.
Told my mam and dad.
They're mighty glad.
Told the preacher man too.
Yes, I told them all about you.

I told the little frog
Sitting on the log
Down by the big blue ocean.
The fishes and the whales
Waggled their tails,
Caused a big commotion.
Told the little crickets
Jumping in the thickets.
They started to sing their song.
The old church bell
Went "Well, well, well!
Ding dong! It won't be long."
Walking through the zoo,
Telling all I knew,
Something made(?) me dizzy.
There in the park
I heard the stork
Say, "Boys, I'll soon get busy."
The whole world knows it's true.
I'm in love with you.

Told the shady nook.
Told the babbling brook.
Told the man in the moon.
I told them all about you.
I told each little bird
Every single word
You say is worthwhile.
Yes, I told them all about you.
I've told the sun and every star that there was to tell.
I even told the sexton; he tolled the bell!
Told my mam and dad
And they're mighty glad.
Told the preacher man too.
Yes, I told them all about you.
Yes, I told them, told them all about you.

[* Donald Peers (1908-1973) was Welsh. I assume this record was made in Britain, but the YouTube entry gives no information besides that it was on the HMV label.]

Here is my transcription of Arthel 'Doc' Watson and David 'Dawg' Grisman's version of All About You on the album DOC & DAWG (1997)

I told the daffodils
I told the whippoorwills
just how pretty you smile
Yes I told 'em all about you

I told each little bird
every little single word
that you say is worthwhile
Yes I told 'em all about you

I told the moon and every little star that shines above
about the way you roll your pretty eyes
and how you love

Each little honeybee
knows there's gonna be
a honeymoon for two
Yes I told 'em all about you
