Subject: Lyr Add: In Diesen Heil'Gen Hallen
From: chico
Date: 15 Sep 05 - 08:54 PM

(C Dm/F G7 C)

   C       Dm      C/G G
In diesen heil'gen Hallen                Within these hallowed halls
       C       G    C G/D
Kennt man die Rache nicht.                One knows not revenge.
Und ist ein Mensch gefallen,                And should a person have fallen,
       C         G   D7 G (C G D7 G, or g, e c b d, c a g)
Führt Liebe ihn zur Pflicht.                Love will guide him to duty.
G   7       C               G
Dann wandelt er an Freundes Hand        Then wanders he on the hand of a friend
G   7         C               G (7)
Vergnügt und froh ins bess're Land.        Cheerful and happy into a better land.

                C/E    Am       Dm/F
|: Dann wandelt er an Freundes Hand
    G7          C    F    C    G7 C
Vergnügt und froh ins bess're Land. :|

Am   Dm F       G   7   C (c b < f d b c, e d < a g > b d c)
Ins bess're, ins bess're Land,

In diesen heil'gen Mauern,                Within these hallowed walls,
Wo Mensch den Menschen liebt,                Where human loves the human,
Kann kein Verräter lauern,                No traitor can lurk,
Weil man dem Feind vergibt.                Because one forgives the enemy.
Wen solche Lehren nicht erfreun,        Whomever these lessons do not please,
Verdient nicht ein Mensch zu sein.         Deserves not to be a human being.

(C F C F Bb F C7, Bb C7 F F#°, G7 C7 F)

    F       C7   F
Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen                          A girl or a little wife
         Bb F    C
Wünscht Papageno sich                                Wishes Papageno
Bb      C7      F   (F#°)
O so ein sanftes Täubchen                       O, such a soft little dove
    G7   C7       F   (C) (or f > c, f a c)
Wär Seligkeit für mich                                Would be bliss for me!
       F    C7       F (C)
Wär Seligkeit für mich
Wär Seligkeit für mich.

(a g e a g e a g c c c, a g e g f d < b d c)
or (F C7, &c, Dm G7 C)

Dann schmeckte mir Trinken und Essen;                Then drink and food would taste good to me;
                      G7               C
Dann könnte' ich mit Fürsten mich messen,        Then I could measure myself with princes,
    F                      C7
Des Lebens als Weiser mich freun,                Enjoy life as a wiseman,
    Bbmaj7   F C7 F   (C F; or g a a)
Und wie im Elysium sein.                        And feel like I'm in Elysium.
      F       C       F       C    F
Dann könnte' ich mit Fürsten mich messen,
                   /E       Bb
Des Lebens als Weiser mich freun,
    F       C7    F   (f a > c e g bb > c e f)
Und wie im Elysium sein.
    F   C7   F (trill)    C7      F   (low f f f)
Im Elysium sein,      im Elysium sein.

Ach, kann ich denn keiner von allen                Ah, can I not please any of all
den reizenden Mädchen gefallen?                        Those charming girls?
Helf' eine mir nur aus der Not,                        If only someone would help me out in this need,
Sonst gräm¹ ich mich wahrlich zu Tod.                Otherwise I will worry myself to death.
Wird keiner mir Liebe gewähren,                        If no one will grant me love,
So muss mich die Flamme verzehren;                Then the flame must consume me;
Doch küsst mich ein weiblicher Mund,                Still, if a womanly mouth kisses me,
so bin ich schon wieder gesund.                        Then I'll be immediatly healthy again.

[W.A. Mozart, Magic Flute]

CHICO - I am enjoying your postings

Thank you for the attribution to Mozart, as an "academic courtesy" (Lord surely knows there is D-mned little academic about the MudCat)

IT is OK ... even if it is another website.

Please post your sources, (http? Publisher, page, year etc.) And IF only MOZART - what Act Scene Line numbers (publisher)??

Keep up the postings

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I enjoy the "Magic Flute" songs, too - but I see no reason why Chico didn't post all the "Magic Flute" songs in the same thread.
I'll move them together later, but it's a damn hassle.

My source is just internet postings of the libretto/lyrics, and the chords I did myself.

For Gargoyle, the aria "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" is commonly cited as No. 20, Act II.
The score and pertinent data are available here: http://opera.stanford.edu/iu/libretti/zauber.html.
Die Zauberfloete
Links to Acts 1 and 2 at bottom of page. Midi links also available at the Stanford website. In Act II, scroll down to 20. Arie and find an excellent midi by Bill King as well as the text.
In the opera, the first four lines (Ein Mädchen---) are repeated after each verse.

The Stanford website cited for "Ein Mdchen ---) has a midi by Bill King.

Mozart didn't write the words - so the full "acandemic courtesy" should also credit Emanuel Schikaneder, who did.

For full "academic couresy" perhaps we must credit both Emanuel Schikaneder and Carl Ludwig Gieseke, as is done at the Stanford opera website.
This is a controversial point; some music historians (and Gieseke) state that Schikaneder compiled the libretto from material supplied by Gieseke.
Albert Einstein said "Many critics find it so good that they deny its authorship to poor Schikaneder --- But if he (Gieseke) wrote any of it at all, it was at most Tamino's discourse with the Speaker, the diction of which is somewhat above Schikaneder's powers."
(Gieseke acted in Shikaneder's production, but he was a mineralogist and chemist who became Royal Director of Mines in Denmark and later Professor of Mineralogy and Chemisry at the University of Dublin).

Magic Flute

(I have two DVD's of the opera, notes in one from the Glyndebourne Festival credits Schickaneder, the other of the Metropolitan Opera production does not credit a librettist).

Gervase took great delight in playing Papagenos song (" Ein Vogelfanger bin Ich ja....")From the first act of "the Magic Flute" as a rather catchy Morris tune on Melodeon!! try it , it works !!!

Denn alle Vögel sind ja mein.                For all the birds are indeed mine.

Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja,                 The birdcatcher I am indeed,
Stets lustig heissa hopsasa!                Always happy, heidi heh hey!
Ich Vogelfänger bin bekannt             I, the birdcatcher, am well-known
Bei Alt und Jung im ganzen Land.        To old and young throughout the land.
Ein Netz für Mädchen möchte ich;        A net for girls is what I would like;
Ich fing sie dutzendweis für mich!        I¹d catch them by the dozen for me!
Dann sperrte ich sie bei mir ein        Then I would lock them up with me
Und alle Mädchen wären mein.                And all the girls would be mine.

Wenn alle Mädchen wären mein,                 If all the girls were mine,
So tauschte ich brav Zukker ein.        Then I¹d dutifully trade for some sugar.
Die welche mir am liebsten wär,                The one I liked the best,
der gäb ich gleich den Zukker her.        To her I would immediately give the sugar.
Und küsste sie mich zärtlich dann,        And if she kissed me tenderly then,
Wär' sie mein Weib und ich ihr Mann.        She would be my wife and I her husband.
Sie schlief an meiner Seite ein;        She would fall asleep by my side;
ich wiegte wie ein Kind sie ein.        I would rock her to sleep like a child.

Remember Anna Russell's Reader's-Digest version of
The Ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner?

I have just discovered a live performance version of
the Anna Russell Reader's Digest summary of:
Mozart's Magic Flute. It's a corker! Hope I can make a link.
