Hi Chez,

This is the best I can do for you. I don't find any minors other than the Cm. But I have to tell you I hear others or at least the potential for others.

The Limeliters were heavily arranged so I wouldn't be surprised to find an instrumental minor chord begining

Don

The Wayward Wind,

Chorus:
(G) Oh, the wayward wind is a restless (C) wind,
(Cm) a restless (G) wind, that yearns to (D7) wander.
And he was (G7) born the next of (C) kin,
(Cm) The next of (G) kin, (D7) to the (C)wayward (G) wind.

(G) In a lonely shack by a railroad track,
He spent his younger days.
And I guess the sound of the outward bound,
(D7) made him a slave to his wandering (G) ways.

Repeat Chorus

(G) Oh, I met him there in a border town.
He vowed we'd never part.
Though he tried his best to settle down,
(D7) I'm now alone with a broken (G) heart.

From: Joe Offer

For the record, here are the lyrics of the Limeliters version.

WESTERN WIND
(Gottlieb/Reynolds)

Western wind, when wilt thou blow
The small rain down can rain?
O if my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

East wind over a foreign place,
Out of an alien sky;
This is the road she chose to go,
When she kissed her love goodbye,
With the west wind blowing by.

Western wind, when wilt thou blow
The small rain down can rain?
O if my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

Now once more on the highest hill,
She stood to see his face.
But when she turned, the west wind came,
And made her steps retrace.
And said this is your place.

Western wind, when wilt thou blow
The small rain down can rain?
O if my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

Far lands beckon so strange and fair,
They call her youth away,
But when the eastern wind blows cold,
And alien skies are grey,
She dreams of a younger day.

Western wind, when wilt thou blow
The small rain down can rain?
O if my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

O if my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

transcribed by ear from from The Slightly Fabulous Limeliters

The album attributes the song to "Gottlieb/Reynolds," but at least part of the song is traditional.

The version I really liked of "The Wayward Wind" was that one done by Gene Vincent. Nice to be reminded of it. Thanks for the chords, Don.

The big hit of Wayward Wind was done by Gogi Grant. Recently on one of those PBS fund raiser specials, she sang it (or so it seemed) pretty well for someone who appeared to be around 80 or so.

So, can anyone out there provide the chords to the Limeliters' version?

Starts with Am, maybe?

That may help for one stanza if you can or know someone who can match chords to notation.

The Limeliters took a 500-year-old lyric—a single verse—and cobbled up their version. Theirs is not traditional.

Here's the scoop.

I sing only the one original verse, slowly and soulfully, with minimal chords on the guitar. It's a lament for a lost love, and the one verse says it all.

My personal opinion, but I think the Limeliters' rendition makes a sow's ear out of a silk purse…..

Actually, I have an appreciation for both versions, and I'm aware of its history.

But Don - are you sure that's the link you meant to provide?

Nine years have passed since the Original Post. I don't know if anybody is interested in playing this anymore. How much work is it worth?

BUT --

The Limelighters' version is on YouTube, and it's in the key of D. At least that's where it starts. The first few chords are

D Western
F#m wind, when
Bm wilt thou
F#m blow?

For an exciting, plunging, sound, you can go back to D on "blow."

That ought to get people started. If you are not familiar with F#m, it's a good chord to learn, adding richness to songs in the good old key of D.
=============
It seems to me the original said "Western wind, HOW wilt thou blow."

I just worked it out this morning:

(Am) Western wind, when (G) wilt thou (Am) blow
(C) The small (F) rain down can (E) rain?
(Am) O if my love were in my (Dm) arms (Am)
(F) And I in my (E) bed (Am) again!

(Am) East wind (E) over a (Am) foreign (G) place,
(F) Out of an (G) alien (Am) sky;
(Am) This is the (G) road she (F) chose to (E) go,
(Am) When she kissed her (G) love (Am) goodbye,
(F) With the west wind (G) blowing (Am) by.

A couple of chords are not quite right, but it works.

(C) The small (F) rain down can (E) rain?

(F) And I in my (E) bed (Am) again!

(Am) East wind (E) over a (Am) foreign (G) place,
(F) Out of an (G) alien (Am) sky;

Federico, thanks so much for posting the chords!

Even though it's an old thread, I'm still interested in the song, though I'll have to play each version though a few times more to see how it feels - but it's definitely a great starting point for an Olde Tin Ear like myself.

Thanks again!

I played this years ago and recently tried to reconstruct what i had used. It's the same tune the limeliters used but not the same key or chords. Hopefully, the format will hold to keep the chords in the right place above the words. If you're still on this thread, let me know what you think.

Em      Em7 Em    Em7 E    Em7 Em
Am      Em       D          Em
Western wind when wilt though blow
               D       G    B

G       D                G

    Am      B    Em
