Subject: Tune Req: Ancient Greek song by Mark Graham From: GUEST,Wolfie Date: 03 Oct 05 - 12:32 AM I'm in a Celtic band and while wandering through various websites with lyrics I came across this song. I only have lyrics and cannot find any further information regarding the song. The link with the lyrics is here http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiANCGREEK.html I am also a second year master's student focusing on ancient/medieval history, primarily Greek and Ancient Near East. This song, of course, caught my attention and I would dearly love to hear it. Can anyone help? Most appreciated. Wolfie

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Ancient Greek song by Mark Graham From: Mark Cohen Date: 03 Oct 05 - 01:31 AM I know I've heard Mark sing it, but it was years ago. Like fifteen. The tune is certainly a traditional one. According to an earlier thread, the tune may be "The Humours of Whiskey." That's in the DT here, and if you scroll to the end you can hear a MIDI of the tune. Could be, but I don't think I remember him singing it to that tune. (Of course, my memory is far from trustworthy these days.) I was thinking the tune was more along the lines of "Nine Times a Night," but I'm probably way off. The song is not on Mark's recent recording. All of his songs are good, and many of them are flat-out brilliant. He's also one of the best harmonica players in the world. This would be a very good excuse for me to contact my old friend Janet Stecher, whose singing partner Susan Lewis also happens to be Mrs. Mark Graham. (The guy definitely has it all...) I'll let you know if I can find anything out, unless someone beats me to it. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Ancient Greek song by Mark Graham From: Ebbie Date: 03 Oct 05 - 01:40 AM Lucky you, Mark. Graham came to Juneau once and that man is unique. Talented, inventive, fun - his mind just doesn't work like most people's. Somewhere I have his songbook and a cassette tape with some of his songs. I remember that Greek one but it isn't all that ancient, if I recall correctly. He's also the one who wrote, 'I've Seen Your Aura- and It's Ugly, as well as that Zen song- what's the name of it?' Steve Martin and Mark Graham.remind me of each other in some odd ways. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Ancient Greek song by Mark Graham From: MartinRyan Date: 03 Oct 05 - 09:32 AM I've heard it done to "The Bould Thady Quill", also - but I think the Humours is a better fit. Regards |
