Radriano and myself will be at the National Interpreters Workshop in Mobile, Alabama this November. I'll be there the 8th through 12th, and Radriano will be joining me part of the time to do a workshop, "Chanteys of Mobile Bay," and to be the entertainment at the evening media awards ceremony. It will be our first time in Mobile. Any suggestions of places to eat for regional, non-touristy food would be much appreciated. The days will be filled, but I always like to go for the local foods for dinner rather than the typical hotel fare. Like traditional music, food gives us a key to a culture.

What fun for you both! I can just imagine the two of you explaining the mechanics of "screwing cotton" before bursting into a full-throated rendition of "Fire Maringo" to the utter astonishment of the assembled throng.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

We're rolling down to Mobile Bay;
Yes, we're rolling down to Mobile Bay;
We'll screw cotton all the day,
Drink and dance the night away;
And we're rolling down to Mobile Bay

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Thank you for your good wishes, Charley and Kat. Anyone familiar with the food scene there?

Wow! You're going to be almost in our back yard! Will you have any time to meet Mudcatters while you're there? If so, I'll talk to JtS to see if it would be possible for us to make a trip down to Mobile while you're in the neighborhood.

Hmmmmm.

I'd recommend three styles of food to you to get the best feel for the place.

1. A crawfish boil; crawfish, red potatoes, corn and andoile susauge all boiled in together. mmmmmmm mmmmmmm. If is it open, the best place for that meal is the Florabama Lounge, Perdido Key Florida http://www.florabama.com/ which is about 75 minutes drive from Mobile. This place is the most locally cultural place on the whole Redneck Riveria.

2. Southen Barbeque: at a place like this: http://www.brickpit.com/

3. Catfish and hush puppies: I'm not a big fan but it should be easy enough to find if you are interested.

Thank you, CarolC and Jack! Yes, if it turns out you can wing it, I'd think that the hospitality room at the hotel, where conferees hold nightly folk music sessions, would be a good meeting place. There are some evening events planned for conferees, but I'll find out what the free evenings are, and send you a PM with hotel info and such.

Now, if there's a nearby equivalent of the Florabama lounge....

best,

Chanteyranger

I just checked out the Brick Pit website, and I am definitely going there. That looks like the real deal. Thanks much, JtS.
