You can get fast service from Strings and Beyond on Elixer Baritone set #11308 with enough strings for the Taylor 8 string Baritone or the Taylor Regular Baritone (5 steps down) 6 string. Gauges are 70 59 47 35 22 16. I substitute a wrapped Elixer 24 for the plain 22 with excellent results.

I had to build a special subwoofer for my Roland Acostic 60 amp using an RCA subwoofer from a home-theater subwoofer which is well worth the effort since the 70/B string is about 60hz.

I actually use all of the strings from 59 on down on my presentation Larrivee and thus I have lately taken to ordering sets of four of each string for a lesser overall cost. but the pick-up on the Taylor is a superb match for the Roland amp.

I may be awkward, but although I know many who love Newtone strings, they are one of only three brands that I have put onto a guitar, given a chance for a day or three, and then taken off 'cos they sounded "wrong". I'm normally too mean to do that.

One other was EXPs, and the third was something with a funny name like "Redwing".

for a solid body 31" neck 6 string baritone.

When I needed custom bass guitar strings for my mando-plank-bass (a 31 inch scale bass guitar tuned GDAE) Strings Direct were very helpful.

If, Sam, you bought the "Vintage" new I think JHS (John Hornby Skewes) are the UK distributors for Vintage and they might be able to find out for you. I'd expect the guitar to be a bit plunky and muddy with that much damping in the string. They sound a bit like the D'Addario EXPs which I think have the coating between the core and windings, unlike Elixirs which have the coating on the outside. I tried EXPs once and IMHO they simply do not "sing".

Hi folks,

I have a 'Vintage' Baritone acoustic I've just bought and promptly broke a string on. the strings are phosphor bronze and have a sort of nylon coat between the core of the string and the bit that wraps around. I'm about to buy some d'addarios, but I love its tone with the strings it has on, and I want to get the same brand if possible. Any ideas what these are?

I use the LaBella medium set myself and have really liked them on my Alvarez. It's nice to see someone else playing in CGCFGC. I'm still trying to figure my way around the tuning so I can do arrangements with a C/G hurdy gurdy. Anyone have any suggestions with this tuning?

I took the Baritone strings off my Alvarez-Yairi Baritone, put regular old mediums on, and tuned it DGCFAD - standard one whole tone down. It sounded fine. Then I put it in CGCFGC (DADGAD one whole tone down) and I love it. Probably use it that way for the foreseeable future.

D'Addario EXP23 Coated Phosphor Bronze Baritone Acoustic Guitar Strings

Bottom string is a 70 which is perfect for tone and comfort.

I just ordered some D'Addario Baritone strings from Music123, but they have not come in yet. They are 0.016" to 0.070". Music123 also sells GHS Baritone Strings, which are 0.014" to 0.070". I normally use Elixir light gauge strings for standard tuning, and their "B" string is 0.016", so these would seem to allow B-to-B tuning on a guitar with a normal scale length at a tension similar to light gauge strings. I know that Tacoma's Thunderhawk baritones use D'Addario strings with a 29" scale length, so they must be tuned to a much greater tension to achieve "B-to-B" baritone tuning. After realizing that, I have thought of just getting a jumbo-sized guitar and stringing it with baritone strings.

Mine is the only one I've had alot of experience with, so other than very brief test drives on others and my previous regular guitar tuned way down with heavy strings, I don't have comparitors.

I like the ability to tune down and (1) get out of the way of other instruments in the same range, (2) match my own voice and others' more effectively, (3) play with additional lower tunings, (4) add some bass when there's no bass player, (5) simply have alternatives.

The only physical feature I don't like about mine, and intend to change, is the tuning machines. They are good quality Schallers with ebony buttons, but the gear ratio isn't quite high enough for the heavier guage low strings. The bigger strings tune easier with a higher gear ratio. I have Gotohs with an 18:1 ratio on another axe and I think they'd be good on the baritone.

Mine is maple back and sides (it appears in a Mudcat photo, have a look), spruce top, ebony everywhere else. The reasoning was to keep some clear trebles with the spruce and maple while being tuned down, but without comparitors it's hard to know if this is sound reasoning.

The scale is 27" which is shorter than some baritones but after a few years I've come to like it as a compromise between fingering comfort and low tunability. I generally tune down to C or C# at standard intervals, and lower with open tunings, but it depends on whether it's strung with regular D'Addario heavies or custom sets even lower. After experimenting with heavier guages, I don't use anything bigger than a .066 now, or lighter than a .059 on the 6th.

The shape is a slightly modified jumbo which, though large, seems to give it enough air to move the low notes. No cutaway because, well, it's supposed to play low and I didn't want to sacrifice body air volume. It can really rumble but also responds to a light touch.

At the moment it has a Shatten Design Dualie pickup in it, but it usually gets a mic.

Built by Marc Beneteau in 1998 after considerable discussion about the various features. I'm very happy with it.

I sometimes use a .066 for the sixth and then the lowest 5 (6th to 2nd) from a light set (EJ16) or medium set (EJ17) of D'Addario phosphor-bronze for the rest. Got my 66s from www.juststrings.com who also sent me a .070 and a .080 which I found too heavy for the scale length of 27". Currently it's strung with EJ18 heavy guage (14-59) and only tuned down to C which seems to suit the instrument, and it's easier putting together string sets. I'm almost out of 66s, but they're easily got by ordering online from one of the string suppliers.

Give me a minute and I'll find the address of another supplier.

Can anyone help me out? I'm trying to find acoustic baritone guitar strings? The lowest string probably needs to be 67-70 or so. I can find electric strings but need some bronze or bright bronze strings. Any ideas? Thanks
