Subject: Will ye go, lassie go From: mm Date: 10 Jan 99 - 05:37 PM Has anyone got the full words of "Wild Mountain Thyme, an Irish song with the chorus Will ye go, lassie, go And we'll all go together To pull wild mountain thyme All among the blooming heather (often misattributed as Scottish) - I can't remember them all and they don't seem to be in the archives. |
Subject: Lyr Add: WILL YOU GO, LASSIE, GO? From: anne Date: 10 Jan 99 - 05:48 PM Here it is: Oh, the summertime is coming and the trees are sweetly blooming, And the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather. Will you go lassie, go? And we'll all go together to pluck wild mountain thyme All around the blooming heather. Will you go lassie, go? I will build my love a tower near the crystal fountain, And on it I will pile all the flowers of the mountain. Will you go lassie, go? If my true love she were gone, I would surely find another Where the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather. Will you go lassie, go?

Subject: RE: Will ye go, lassie go From: Harry Date: 10 Jan 99 - 06:42 PM Sorry to disagree, mm, but the attribution was accurate. The song is not only Scottish in origin, it's not even a Folksong, if knowing the author etc. disqualifies it. But here we are on very shaky ground. Chase up the thread from before Christmas. It was very interesting. Harry |
Subject: RE: Will ye go, lassie go From: Pete M Date: 10 Jan 99 - 06:43 PM Umm well actually mm, if you are into assigning traditional songs to a particular locality, the evidence suggests that this was originally a Scottish song. There has been a previous discussions on the song here and the oldest extant words were listed by Bruce O here Pete M |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE BRAES O' BALQUITHER From: Bruce O. Date: 10 Jan 99 - 07:17 PM Here's the Scots traditional version that Betsey Miller (Ewan MaColl's mother) knew and sang on Folk-Lyric FL 116.

Subject: RE: Will ye go, lassie go From: Harry Date: 10 Jan 99 - 08:45 PM See also the "Edinburgh Book of Scottish Verse" ed. Prof Mc Neil-Dixon, E'burgh, 1910. The complete text as composed by Tannihill in the C18 is given. Traditional? Is "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose" by Burns traditional ? Popular, yes, but traditional? Harry |
