Subject: FSGW - Setlist for Saturday Night Concert
From: voyager
Date: 20 Oct 05 - 03:06 PM

Now that the GetAway has GoneAway....

Can someone help me assemble a set-list (performers/songs) for
the Saturday night program? The uniqueness of this program
stays with me for a long time. I've asked Charlie B. to help
out but I can imagine he's a bit busy (still)!

Cheers

Great idea, thanks. I am discovering that on the minidisc recordings that I made I don't remember as many singers' names as I thought I would. (Hey, they're right in front of me- of course I'll remember who is doing this great song!)

In time, I hope other events will be notated.

I sang "Dead Reckoning" on the Saturday and "Elephants' Teeth" on Sunday - both written by me (Andrew McKay). I also played concertina for (Sussex)Carole Etherton on Sunday - the song was "Scarecrow" by Carole's friend Maria Cunningham from Sussex, England - a great song, as already noticed on the other thread.

Great weekend - we enjoyed it immensely.

Finn Tales on Sunday did a net hauling shanty that comes from the manhaden fishing industries off the coasts of Virginia, N & S Carolina & I believe Georgia. Recorded by & from the Manhaden Fishermen & I believe also by & from the Long Neck Shanteyman, both groups have members that where manhaden fishermen up until the mid to late 60's, when the tradition sank under the blue.

#20 on Saturday, I played guitar and sang, and was accompanied by Lorcan Otway on D whistle and Terry Silver on mandolin. The song was written by my brother Chris Dunn, to the tune of the Foggy Dew, and concerned the grave-robbing of the Titanic - 'For Titanic's deceased should be left alone in peace, and may God preserve all those who sailed in her'.

The sound engineers, incidentally, we're extraordinarily adept at amplifying Saturday's concert.

It's great to see this setlist getting built.
I expect that by the 2006 GetAway we should have filled in most
spots from the Sat/Sun(I missed) concert.

Can someone hazard a guess for the Dave Diamond/Judy Cook
'Old Fool, Darn Fool' love ballad :^>

I'd love to know whose clever pen crafted that song.

The "old fool, darn fool" song is usually called "(However many) Nights Drunk". You add up how many (other men's) thingys he finds in places where his (whatever) ought to be and you have the number. I bet no one can put a name to that one, just (maybe) the particular tune they learned, or who first sang the version they heard. I'd be willing to bet it's a real TRAD.

"'N' Nights Drunk" (see David Diamond and Judy Cook on Saturday night above) is also known as "Our Goodman" and is Child Ballad # 274.

"Rubber Ducky" (as sung by Janice Cole on Sunday) has words & music by Jeffrey Moss, and is mostly associated with "Sesame Street," though not by friends of Janice.

Close, but only half the cigar.

My number with Mia Boynton was actually a two-tune set. The first was "Le 6/8 de Alain Rivard", and the second was "The Reunion" by Russ Barenberg. The instrument I was playing was an octave mandolin.

Edmund's song was "River Driving on the Sagandog", to which he had just added a brand new verse.

A few details about my song: the title is "River Driving". It was collected by Jeanne Robert Foster and published in 1916 in a book of poems she had collected and written, called Neighbors of Yesterday. The tune is by Dan Berggren, 1990. I learned it from the singing of Jeff Warner on his new (excellent) CD, "Jolly Tinker". Charmion didn't know the song before I sang it to her a few times after lunch on the day of the concert.

Well voyager, that is one version of "Five Nights Drunk," but it is a long, long way from the version that Dave and Judy sang! Theirs was a bit more mainstream, shall we say. :-)

The version you linked to is about 10 times as raunchy as any I've ever heard. Wonder where it came from? Maybe a fraternity house....

There are so many versions of the song that (if my memory isn't failing me again) FSGW's own Joe Hickerson did his doctoral thesis (in folklore) on the history, variants, etc of "Five Nights Drunk."
