Subject: Folkie Youth - or Hi, I'm New Here
From: JennyDeckner
Date: 23 Oct 05 - 02:10 PM

I've been lurking for the past week or so, and I figured that it's high time I post something. I'm new not only to this community, but to folk music in general. Ken Schatz has been gradually introducing me to these gorgeous songs for the past few months, and I've recently fallen madly in love with the songs, the sound, the style, and the community as a whole. I was actually at last night's wonderful shanty sing at South St. Seaport - thank you to anyone who attended for a lovely evening of song.

I think that this is a good time for introducing young people to traditional folk and enhancing the community. I'm a seventeen year old high school senior, and though I've never been quite the average teenager in my musical tastes, I immediatly appreciated this music and quickly fell in love with it. I shared a few songs with a friend, who shared a few songs with her friend, who shared a few songs with his friend, and they quickly came to the collective realization that if they're going to drink beer and stare at the Charles River, they may as well sing some shantys while they're at it. They're currently in the process of forming a folk music society at Berklee College. There's also a new traditional music ensemble at the University of Connecticut, if the flyers littering the music building are to be trusted. It may sound absurd, but because of that silly Pirates of the Carribean movie a few years ago, pirates are very "in" right now. My sister is the president of the Harvard Pops Orchestra, and they're doing a pirate themed concert next month that might (if I can successfully convince her) include a few shantys. When I play shantys for friends or talk to them about it, they immediatly get excited because, well, they like pirates (I invited a friend to last night's shanty sing, and her response was "Ooh! Can I wear a peg leg?!"). It may be a little silly, but I think it would be possible to take advantage of the pirate frenzy and start introducing more young people to traditional music. There is an audience out there for it. Exceedingly good songs are exceedingly good songs, you know? We just need to be introduced to them.

So...thanks for keeping the songs alive and for sharing your extensive knowledge. I look forward to learning more beautiful, thrilling songs and the history behind them and becoming a part of this wonderful, vibrant community.

You are the future of the music we love and it's only by encouraging people your age that the tradition will continue.

All the best to you.

Jenny:

Welcome to the Mudcat, and welcome to the wide and whacky world of folk music in all its myriad tones and colors!

I hope you enjoy years of pleasant dialogue on the threads, and find scores of beautiful songs to learn and spread about.

A small word of wisdom: NEVER let anyone here hurt your feelings -- we get the occasional loonie who specializes in being mean about ordinary things, and taking it personally can be a serious error and cause unnecessary tailspin. Our motto is "Don't feed the trolls" even though it is hard to remember some times.

Meanwhile, sing much, sing out, sing often and may you have great joy from it.

Regards,

A

A hearty welcome from the Ozarks. There's many things to like about Mudcat.   There are folks here from all points on the globe so there's a broad perspective; the pooled knowledge of Mudcatters is mind boggling, and lots of folks willing to help or chat as the need may be. Besides some of us were young once ourselves and have vague memories of what it was like.

Glad to have you aboard.

Welcome, Jenny, and let us know how the projects you mention above are developing. There are enough pirate songs around to go a long way. And don't be put off by thinking us too old! For instance, I'm only three times your age ('in my prime', as Miss Jean Brodie would say) ...

Three times her age, hell! I'm 3.5294117647 and so on times her age and getting older all the time. And I have to say that I'm shocked, YES! shocked! that there is no Folk Music Society at Berklee!!

So...welcome.

Now go out there and start a Folk Music Society at Berklee, or I'll tell what's-his-name on you. Kusak or something...it's hell getting old...can't hardly remember all 1,345 verses to "Bastard King of England" anymore.

Nice to have such a young thing around.

PIRATES? EYAH??? IN STYLE????

Consult the "talk like a pirate day threads."

Using BRACKETS [pirates] or [talk like] (NOT Parenthsis) place it in the search box at the top of the "forum." You will suddenly become the "hippist chick" in the "pirate clique" along the Charles River.

Sincerely,

From: Bard Judith

I am also a newcomer to the Mudcat forum, but have been a folkie from my youth. That was back when they had these big black grooved discs called 'records' (because they had music 'recorded' on them, get it?) and I listened to everything from the (now-much-despised) 'Wild Rover', 'Squid-Jiggin'Ground' and 'Day-O', to 'Silver in the Moon', 'John Henry', 'White Coral Bells' and the 'Vagabond Song' . . .    Then I discovered Child ballads, Faithful, Belefonte, Dylan, and many more in my teens (though a bit behind the social spectrum) and went on into the esoterica of Swahili chants, Austrian yodels, Gaelic fiddling, East Coast sea chantys... anything called 'folk' will suffice my mad cravings, alas...

Now, at twice Jenny's age, I aspire to minstrelry myself - composition, lyrics, improv, performance - and the passion is only a deeper infection which may never be cured.

I can't resist welcoming her with a lyric that perhaps captures the sense of delight which different generations can take in each other's abilities and gifts, particularly since it has her name in it. Forgive me, all, if you've heard it before...

"Jenny kissed me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief, who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in:

Say I'm weary, say I'm sad,
Say that health and wealth have missed me,
Say I'm growing old, but add
Jenny kissed me."

Alas, I don't think anyone has set it to music officially. I remember, as a child, singing it with my sister to a modified version of a famous hymn tune   (obviously speeded up to dance-tempo! Rather appropriate, taking into consideration the many times the sacred and secular worlds have borrowed tunes from each other...)

At any rate, welcome, Jenny!

Hi Jenny,

Greetings from the UK!
Here's a couple of things you might like to try:

(i) Read some of the stuff written by your great countryman, Alan Lomax and, more importantly, listen to some of the recordings he made.

(ii) See if you can find a copy of a film called 'Songcatcher' by Maggie Greenwald. It's the best film about folk song I've ever seen and contains some wonderful singing.

Of course the US has a truly immense store of wonderful music and it's going to take quite a while to even scratch the surface - but if you begin to feel like a change you can always come over to this side of 'The Pond' and listen to some of our stuff.

Best wishes,
DB

Wow!! Are you in for a good time. Don't rush things. Remember the Tortoise and the Hare--Slow and steady Wins The Race. "The Race" here being a lifetime of enjoyment and wisdom gained from the songs, tunes, people, activities pursued to know and share the music. (Seventeen? Drinking beer? I'm shocked, do you hear--shocked to learn that there's gambling--um, er,--beer drinking going on among students listening to music!!! Remember to always have a designated watch-for-the-cops member of your growing group.)

There are folks at the Mudcat Cafe from AAAALLLLLL OOOOOVVVVEEERRRR the known universe and a few places besides. 99.9999999etc.% of them are warm, friendly, helpful, good to each other in many ways. You have just plunked yourself down in a batch of folks who will go out of their way to make your life better and richer in many ways--a life full of best friends. You'll even get to meet some of them face to face from time to time. Pull up a chair. Have a cup of hot tea and tell us what songs you know (or want to know--but don't go with the clicky on that Bastard King of England one. You're too young.) Does it have a chorus? Oh, yeah--we know that one. He can play it on the banjo......Tw

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to Mudcat!

I'm not sure how Gargoyle got me on his "beware" list, but then it IS a list of awful nice people (even Clinton, under all his attitude). In case he's got you worried, though, I'm a happily married old pastor's wife who is not interested in any young women's' "nubility" except as an older sister might say, "You go, girl!"

Welcome from this side of the pond. You'll find a lot of shanties & shanty singers on Mudcat.

one of the best things about shanties is that everyone can sing them, the other wonderful thing about them is they are great songs to sing!

All these daft old codgers like nothing better than dishing out advice to young 'uns just starting out on that long winding road to folkdom.

I'm about to run out to the record store down the street (that didn't have the Bellamy or Young Tradition that I was hoping to pick up *sniffle*) and I'm wondering whether anyone would recommend either of the following two collections: Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings or Classic Maritime Music from Smithsonian Folkways. Young Tradition you can get by doing a google for "Young Tradition" - and rummaging a bit. I had been looking for a replacement for the first Young Tradition LP (on vinyl then of course) for 20 years when I found CDs of their stuff that way.

Another "Welcome" from Wales. (I'm 3.1176470588235294117647058823529-times your age if we'r obsessing about this!)

The weekend before last, I was at a memorial evening for Siwsi George (a Welsh trad singer who passed away earlier this year) and there were some young men (locals, early 20s?) in the adjoining bar who thought it was funny to try to drown out the few opening songs of the night. They had to cross through our room to get to the washrooms and four of them 'lingered' on the way back long enough to be 'bit by the bug'. Those four stayed in with us to the bitter end and when they left they were swinging their pants to the beat of the closing tune.

I get annoyed when media people tell me young people don't like trad music! I'm glad you've been bit! Spread the word!

Seems to me, too, that there would be a good number of Mudcatters in your area. Some might offer your fledgling folk club some help?

Anyway, welcome again and just remember the advice above: don't feed the trolls.

siân, west wales

Hi & Welcome Jenny

For your friends at Berklee there is the Boston Folk Song Society. The Boston Globe on Thrusday puts out a great list in there calander section of folk venues. There's a sea shanty session in Portsmouth NH on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the Press Room & a regular singing session every Fri eve(45 minutes north). A friend may still be running a sea shanty session across the river at MIT, google her name, Lynn Noel & you'll probably fine out more info about it & feel free to Post Message (PM) me through this site for more info. Say hi to Ken & the rest at South St Seaport. I expect I'll probably be seeing you at the Mystic Sea Music Festival next yr (it's to die for festival for lovers of sea music) if you're already running the rigging with that group. Good Luck.

Barry

Hi Jenny,

As Barry mentioned, we do a monthly shanty/forebitter session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH, about an hour north of you. The next one will be on the 19th of November from 3:30 to 7:30 PM and should be a good one. In addition to some fine local singers, we're usually joined by members of Roll and Go and other good Maine folk, and recently we've had some new blood travelling north from Gloucester.

And while the Press Room is a pub, it is also a restaurant that serves coffee, tea, and soft drinks so that your youth will not keep you out.

PM me with your email for more details. Hope to meet you in a few weeks - Tom

I really appreciate the Boston area event recommendations. Unfortunately (well, depends how you look at it), I'm based in NY so I doubt I'll be in the area for those events. I will definitely forward that information onto the new Berklee folkies, though, and I'm sure they'll greatly appreciate it. I had a dream last night with The Boarding Party and The Young Tradition alternating as the "soundtrack". Have I crossed the point of no return?

One thing I haven't seen any one mention is Renaissance Festivals, you can quite often find some really good music being made by folks that won't get a lot of exposure in local music stores.
There is a ton of advice, musical experience, and knowledge to be found here. Even a laugh or two.

    Once again, welcome aboard,
    Chip2447

Quick addition: The Pirates of Brown University (cofounded by Ken Schatz's former student, Blanche Case) are an a cappella vocal ensemble that sing only traditional sea chanteys. You can visit their website and view their extensive repertoire here: http://www.arrr.net/.

Hi Jenny!
I'm another newbie young 'un, and I totally agree with you about the whole pirate-craze. I must admit I've used it to slowly introduce folk to my friends, though alas, it didn't really take past the shanties. Oh well.
Anyway, great to meet you!

So Ken, still spreading terror everywhere & corrupting todays youth.

JennyDecker, nice web site & nice to see such a large group of X-teens with an interest in doing shanties. Us aged in the barrel folks love to hear the sound of the new blood curddling on. Hope to hear you & your crew sometime. I suspect some of you will make Mystic Sea Fest in June, I/we will keep a blind eye open for ya.

Ken, see you there too.

Barry

I will definitely try to be at Mystic, yes! I'm sure the Folk Brownies will be there too. How I'll get to Mystic is another matter... Hope to meet/hear you sometime.

Welcome to the madhouse. I'm only about twice your age (Nyah, nyah! Most of you are older than my mum!) and I've been a folkie from birth, although I felt the need to go underground during my teen years. There are some of the finest people on earth in this forum and most are extremely encouraging to newbies. I've gone from believing that I couldn't sing to singing my first song in front of people that I hadn't known for more than a couple of days. Lurk, post, learn and welcome again.

If you treat a cold it will last seven days. If you don't, it will last a week.

Welcome JENNY!! and if you ever feel like singing the Wild ROVER, damn' well SING it! A helluva lot of audiences love it to bits. You'll learn here that a fair benighted number are anti-all-kinds-of-things [mostly in a goodnatured way, let me say--] the main thing is--sing what you feel like singing, and get to know your audiences. Have a long and happy folk-life---as I have!

Sadly, I cannot take credit for the founding of ARRR!!!, Brown University's only acapirate group. But I am definitely a proud member and First Mate. Feel free to check out our site, or email me at firstmate@arrr.net if you have any questions.

I tried to convert my friends by taking them to Bellowhead. It worked on a few of them - I will try the pirate thing now. Thanks!

Welcome to mudcat

And, of course, welcome to the wonderful world of folk! ((Part of Show Biz - but that's a good thing) CF Other thread)

It's all brill, but don't stop at shantys (shanties?) there's so much. Not that I'm putting shanties (shantys?) down!

Is it New York State you're in, or New York City - I know it's obvious to Americans, but not me - Because I've found three bands doing instrumental stuff that is truly marvelous.

They all play Contra Dances, but music is music, and I don't mean to do down Contra Dances - I really can't dance, so that part doesn't get me!

Keep your eyes open for:

Wild Asparagus, Airdance and Nightingale.

All three are bands from that vague area that i can recommend from three thousand miles away!

There's so much out there to enjoy, go for it!

Cheers,

QTWF

PS Pirates of The Caribbean is a wonderful film (It's folky connections are merely a bonus!) Johnny Depp's portrayal of Keith Richard as Pirate is a work of genius!

Jenny!

You're the coolest! Actually, you're right on the whole hip-pirates thing; we had Pirate Day at my school. Yeah. so teach me about folk because all i can do is keep singing Turtledove.

Love,
your wife-y and your life-y

I cannot take full credit for the existance of that strange child. Ken Schatz is equally responsible for her general delightful strangeness. Give her six months, and she'll be a full folkie. She has potential.
