Subject: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Oct 05 - 04:56 PM This list needs lots of help. In some cases I'm not familar with the songs and there are many singers to ID. I also screwed up recording the end of the workshop: GETAWAY 2005 SEA & OTHER WATERS WORKSHOP Saturday Afternoon Coordinator: George Ward In performance order: 1. George Ward "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp" Canal Song 2. "Rolling to Cairo Town" 3. Carly Gewitz (?) "Sail On/Chesapeake Gold" 4. "Weary Cutters" 5. Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble) "Outward Bound" (C. Fox Smith) 6. "Bound for Turamaya/Farewell to Sydney Town" 7. "Working on the Illinois River" 8. "Swing Your Partner" Newfoundland song? 9. "Farewell to Tarwathie " 10. Gary Erlich (Gorgoeus Gary) "Ballad of C.S.S. Hunley" (John Huff) followed by verse of "Yellow Submarine" 11. Tom Hall (Curmudgeon) "Hurrah, We're Outward Bound" 12. "Shallow Brown" 13. Noreen Keene "Ranter's Wharf" 14. Theresa Tooley (Treaties1) Haal Ohp 15. Scarpi "Wild Rover-2" Icelandic version 16. End of recording… Again, as with the Shanties Workshop, I plan to send George Ward a CD of the whole things, editing the levels and doing some other minor tweaking. I would also be willing to send a MP3 to anyone who led a song and provides me with an e-mail address. Please PM me the e-mail address. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Cheers, Kathy |

Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: KathWestra Date: 31 Oct 05 - 09:25 PM #6 Bound for Turamaya was sung by Mary LaMarca with harmonic help from husband George Stephens. I believe the tune is her doing, but you should ask her. |
Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 31 Oct 05 - 09:54 PM Charley - Wasn't me. I was just at the Shanties workshop to listen. -- Gary |

Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Nov 05 - 08:06 AM Excellent! That just leaves someone wailing on "Farewell to Tarwathie"... Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Willie-O Date: 01 Nov 05 - 08:24 AM Number 8, variously ID'd in your list as "Swing Your Partner" or "Sally Brown", is clearly "I'se the Bye That Builds The Boat", that most well-worn Newfoundland ditty, which has entered the realm of cliche...not to say it isn't a good song (one of hundreds from the Rock). Q: How do you kill a Newfoundlander? A: Nail his boots to the floor and play "I'se the Bye". Regards W-O |
Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Severn Date: 01 Nov 05 - 02:14 PM The "Sally Brown" I sang is a variation on "I'se The Bye/Lots Of Fish In Bonavist' Harbor" sharing verses with it but using the familiar "Reuben & Rachael" tune. It came from an old LP by Ed McCurdy of Canadian songs. It might be in the Creighton Collection somewhere, as some of the other things from the record are. No liner notes on it, though, to confirm. I hope it sounded good enough to, if not kill a Newfie, at least maim one so we could watch him twitch a bit! (In theory only, of course! :-) ) (That ought to elicit some Canadian response!) |
Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Carly Date: 01 Nov 05 - 06:00 PM Yes, Charlie, I am a Mudcatter, although, as Kath says, I am not a frequent poster. "Chesapeake Gold," by the way, was written by Bill Destler in the 1970's about a real boat that sailed out of Baltimore. |
Subject: RE: GETAWAY 2005 Sea & Other Water Singer ID From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Nov 05 - 06:26 PM Carly- Thanks for checking in. I was thinking that I'd heard Bob Zentz or Tom Wisner sing this one, "Chesapeake Gold." You might consider posting the words on Mudcat if it's not already posted. Charley Noble |
