Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: paddymac Date: 12 Nov 05 - 07:55 PM Welcome, Wolfdog. By luck or divine providence, you have stumbled into the most friendly and helpful place in webworld. Joe pointed you in the right direction by referencing the FAQ (frequently asked questions) thread/link. Joe and his colleagues (lovingly referred to as "Joe Clones") provide a great service by helping those of us less skilled in the web and its "tricks" get the most out of the marvel that is Mudcat. A thread is what you have started. I would define the term as a linear discussion on a specified topic. But, you will quickly that many Mudcatter's have a penchant for posting near the fringes of the topic of the thread. That is called "thread creep" and should generally be avoided. In its extreme form, "thread creep" might more properly be thought of as "thread piracy," also an act on impoliteness. (Please note the word "creep" here is usually used as a verb, and not a personal adjective). Don't ever be afarid to ask a question. The more specific or focused it is, the more likely to find help. Somebody will eventually be along with a helpful answer. |

Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Nov 05 - 08:55 PM Welcome! We are always open to stories about how songs were written and played, and the musicians who made them so feel free to write about anything that interests you. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: pdq Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:18 PM About the head injury, don't worry. Things will only get better. Besides, a modest amount of brain damage is if no consequence here at Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: bobad Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:24 PM [bleep] (for antisocial behavior)As is amply illustrated by the poster. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: SINSULL Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:33 PM Welcome, David. I get into the chat occasionally and hope to meet you there. Meantime, be very careful about posting addresses, phone numbers and personal information in general on the threads. This is a public forum - anyone can read what you post and there are people out there ready to take advantage. That said...this is a very friendly site. Some here are indecently talented and some just passionately interested. Most would be honored to hear your songs. When you are comfortable with navigating the site, do a search for Walt Robertson. You will find a thread filled with memories from people who knew him. It is Mudcat at its best. Maybe you can do the same with your memories of Hoskins and Hurt and the 60s music scene. Welcome! SINS |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: pdq Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:43 PM Please post what you can recall about the old days in folk music. That will help re-new you memories as well as bring to life some people we can no longer see. [bleep] Caution here: Mudcat has a number of asshole. They are easy to spot since they have no sense of humor. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: SINSULL Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:49 PM [bleep] pdq, you have confused assholes with Republicans. Rs have no sense of humor while assholes have no sense. A sample of thread creep for your perusal, David. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: pdq Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:53 PM [bleep] (for antisocial behavior)And some like you and bobad have neither. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: bobad Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:57 PM I'm sorry but I just can't see the humour in brain damage. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: pdq Date: 13 Nov 05 - 12:00 AM My post was not for you, badbob. [bleep] (for antisocial behavior)I don't give a rat's ass what you think is funny. So far, no post you have ever made strikes me as funny. Mostly they are mean-spirited. So fuck-off. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: SINSULL Date: 13 Nov 05 - 12:12 AM Sorry, Wolfdog. I seem to have thrown your thread off course for real. Another real suggestion: when you have a chance, roam through the Digital Tradition above. It is an extensive collection of lyrics and tunes. If you have something new to add, start a thread offering lyrics. Mary |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: bobad Date: 13 Nov 05 - 12:13 AM "So far, no post you have ever made strikes me as funny." If you don't understand something, just PM me and I'll try and explain it to you. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: pdq Date: 13 Nov 05 - 12:21 AM [bleep] (for antisocial behavior)No, boobhead, Your stupidity and hatefulness are easily understood. You are not clever or funny. You are just an asshole who snipes are anyone and everything he sees when he needs to build up his little ego. |

Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: open mike Date: 13 Nov 05 - 02:20 AM Wolfdog, i am glad you found us, and i apologize for those who do not have good manners, and are distracting from the original questions. We (obviously) do not all get along with each other here, and some do not give direct answers to questions. I hope you will be able to find some answers to your questions and that you will continue to come to the Mudcat and have good experiences here. Most of the people here found their way here origianlly when they were searching for lyrics on the web, i believe. The Digital Tradition data base is an incredible resource, where i often have found the words to songs that i sing. When you type a reply to a thread, it automatically goes to the top of the list and if you want to see a message that was sent in several days ago (or months, or years) you can set the filter so that it opens up messages from the past. Well, anyway, do not let the messages confuse you. Sometimes people jsut write the first thing they think of and do not stop to wonder how it sounds or how it will make others feel. Sometimes people say things just to be gross, or get a reaction from other people. We call these people trolls, when there is a message on here that does not make sense, or says something hurtful or un-necessary, the best thing to do is ignore it, instead of responding, getting mad or continuing to escalate the topic. i hope you find the mudcat to be a place where you like to come and I look forward to seeing you here in the future. If you want to find out more about the people here, you can look at their profiles, and you can add information such as pictures, and other stuff in the members information area. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: alanabit Date: 13 Nov 05 - 04:58 AM Welcome Wolfdog. I am looking forward to hearing your reminiscences about the old days. Not all the fans of MJH are your own age and there are plenty of us youngsters, who want to know where our favourite music came from. The occasional poster has put my back up here. For the most part, I have made friends though and met people who are warm hearted, generous and interesting. It is good to know that you are joining them. |

I've been here over six years and am still a relative youngster! Peace moo |

Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: Severn Date: 13 Nov 05 - 08:06 AM And in Maryland and DC, too. You made it into chat the other night. Lurk until you feel like talking. People will introduce themselves and tell you that they're a guy or lady from whatever area of the world, (and we have them from Australia to Samoa to Iceland) so we can understand how best to talk with you and make you at home. That's all you are expected to give, at your option. They patiently had to explain a lot of elementary Brit to me so I could understand English more as spoken by a native while I had to do some of the same from our side of The Pond. People will "blue" you and give you personal messages, answer questions, and glossary help, correst misconceptions, bring you up to date on the conversation that you may have walked into the middle of, warn you about getting doored and the like, all in a most friendly and welcoming manner. And if you walk into a conversation of old friends that have been talking like they've known each other for years, we'd gladly stop saying a lot of the same old things to ourselves to hear some new ones from you. They did it for and with me for the year I've been in here and have proved helpful in a lot of things beyond mere chat and friendship. We even talk a lot of music, when prompted. We'll see you back in soon, I hope. |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: Tig Date: 13 Nov 05 - 08:09 AM Hello wolfdog. I was one of the ones in Chat last night. Don't worry you will soon get the hang of it. I couldn't cope with anything computer based (especially chatrooms!) but I soon learnt to cope with Mudchat. The major rule is DON'T BE AFRAID. We accept people as they are - bad spelling, strange ideas, weird habits, problems etc are all just part of Mudchat. I know I've been supported there more than once! The other thing - which I know you have already been told is DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK. If you don't feel like asking the whole room learn about the 'Blueies' so you can just ask one person. Hope to see you back in there soon. Love and hugs Tig xxxx |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: MMario Date: 13 Nov 05 - 08:54 AM The equivilant of the "blueies" in the chatroom that you can use here on the main forum would be personal messages - or "PM"'s - you'll see a clickable link next to the person's name in the lists of posts on a thread - click that and you can send them a private message. |

Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: Bobert Date: 13 Nov 05 - 10:33 AM Good mornin', my friend and a big welcome from me as well... I live 9 miles southeast of Luray, Virgina on the side of Blue Ridge mountain... I was born and raised in Virginia and played with a lousy and loud rock band in the late 60's in Richmond and played a little in either '75 or '77 at the Crossroads Coffeehouse on Monuement Ave in Richmond... Fir the last several years I've been playin' mostly country blues in the style of Fred McDowell, R.L. Burnside and T Model Ford... I also have been playin' with the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. going back esveral years... Their website is acousticblues.com. If you go there and go to the photos taken at the Potter House performance, I'm the skinny guy with grey hair playing a steel bodied resonator... I'm in other pics as well but that one is the best one... Like where exactly is it that you live??? Sounds like the Shwenadoah valley... Maybe off Rt. 11??? Oh, before you find out from sopmeone else, yeah, from 1985 until this past spring, I did live in a holler in Jefferson Co., Wes Ginny... (the truth 'ill set you free...) Bobert |
Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: Azizi Date: 13 Nov 05 - 11:05 AM Pittsburgh's in the house! Hi, Wolfdog. I'm joining others in welcoming you to Mudcat. I've been a member of Mudcat a little over a year. Since I joined, I have learned alot about music and non-music topics, and shared some information too. Equally as important to me, I have also "met" people on Mudcat who have become my friends. Warning: Mudcat can easily become addictive! Learn, Share, and Enjoy! Ms. Azizi |

Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: wolfdog Date: 13 Nov 05 - 02:24 PM I didn't make myself very clear in last thread. I am a writer and musician who lived and was very close friends with Tom Hoskins (Fang). Tom discovered Mississippi John Hurt and many other blues people. Look under Tom Hoskins house of the blues on your search engine. I met Tom in 1960 and lost contact around the late 1970's. Since that time i understand he died in 2001-2002. I have been on the road a long time but got shot in the head and suffered Tramatic Brain Injury in July 2002. I am recovering at my homeplace in the mountains of Virginia. So i have the time to seek old friends of Fangs and Firk etc. And I need to make some new friends as well. I am very isolated in a cabin in the Bullpasture River Gourge. As you can tell I have learned to talk after the "incident" and am learning to play again. John Hurt and all this happened in Takoma Park, Md. At lease that was home base when we were not travelling. We got Mr. Hurt and family a place nearby. So we played together alot. Thanks for any help or replies from old friends or new. People keep trying to get me to write a book on all this, and I just may.Dave Nicholson General Delivery, Williamsville, Virginia 24487. Thank You, Wolfdog |

Subject: RE: from Wolfdog - help me learn about Mudcat From: Azizi Date: 13 Nov 05 - 05:14 PM Thread Creep: SINSULL, I'm not sure if you counted me as one of the ten or more 'Catters who is working on a book. Let me take this opportunity to give an update of this project: My book is targeted to the adult general public readers, and will present a sampling of English language children's rhymes drawn from my "field work" in Pittsburgh, Penn. and other places, as well as from examples posted on Internet discussion forums such as Mudcat. All of the featured rhymes have a theme of confrontation or violence, or have performance activity that includes hitting, pinching, poking or other acts of "violence". These examples include teacher taunts such as the "Glory Glory Hallelujah" and "Heigh Ho Heigh Ho. I Bit My Teacher's Toe". Other examples of rhymes that will be featured in this compilation are handclaps that are performed to the Hambone tune such as Mama, Mama can't you see clap clap clapclap what that army done to me clap clap clapclap It took away my MTV. Now I have to watch Barney clap clap clapclap Tick tac tow Three in a row Barney's got shot by GI Joe -snip- Is this folk music? I certainly think so. I am particularly interested in including commentary in this book on the general subject of children's rhymes, on the topic of violence in rhymes, as well as on the sources and pycho-social meaning of these types of children's rhymes. Mudcatters, please PM me if you have any examples or comments on this subject. 'Catters and Guests can post examples of these rhymes in any thread on this topic including this one: Naughty Children's Greatest Hits II Thanks to all who have shared information and examples thus far. I'll let you know when this book will be available. Azizi, who obviously thinks that thread creep isn't always creepy or bad. |
