"Julie is a terrific guitar player and she also writes great songs. She shared the stage with me at the South Shields guitar festival and the discerning audience loved her. She stormed it!"
- Ralph McTell

"...impressive, imaginative and diverse guitarist; exceptionally fine and expressive vocalist; writer of powerfully compelling and memorable songs."
Folk On The Pier Festival

"The best female guitarist I have ever seen."
Sue Dewsbury – Gainsborough Folk Festival Organiser

"Brilliant guitarist."
Topic Folk Club, Bradford

"Julie Ellison was a guest at our club this year, she was a big hit with all of us, even to giving Guitar lessons before her performance. John & Anne Taylor first saw Julie at the Holmfirth Festival approximately two years ago, subsequently, she was invited to Guest at the Conwy Folk Club, where it goes without saying that we were all thrilled with her musical talent: great voice, and accomplished Guitar playing, mostly performing her own compositions."
Conwy Folk Club Website.

"Julie Ellison has a voice that transcends such a range of moods whilst her distinctive guitar style provides the ideal embellishment to the song."

I will leave Mr & Mrs Sooz and Strollin' to make their minds up.

Rockhen - sorry ! I've always recorded Julie's gigs whenever possible, and always offered the guests the same if they wanted it.

I've actually got a new set up which allows me to use my main studio gear with the live rig - and I can't resist playing with it ! - hence the need for such an early set up Les (if that's OK).

Not sure I would call myself a "techno whiz" Rockhen - but I'll help if I can ...

John - yes you can use the PA - a posting of mine seems to have gone missing - to record properly the act will need to go through the PA.

Is there anyone on here from the Skiffle group? Need to know the line up and figure if we have enough gear in our regular live rig to handle them

Villan - 6:30 is workable - I'll just work quicker !!

Hey, Les...Hope the new layout works ok and helps with the sound...but if you are having a P.A.this Friday, I guess it may take a couple of times to judge whether it works better, or not.
I know we (www) are used to 'cheating' with mics, usually...I guess the more instruments, playing the harder it gets to avoid vocals needing any amplification. It is easier for a solo guitarist's vocals to be heard than ours, especially if all four of us are playing at once. If you are a classically trained singer, (er...nope!) you have the techniques to project your voice more...plus if you are very confident, it helps. I still think it is great to play acoustically if possible and it is something that I know I want to practise, as I am very new to sometimes singing lead and am still finding my feet and thus my confidence at singing without a mic to hide behind. It is all a good learning experience! Any performer who thinks they are perfect and that there is no more room for improvement should probably give up performing! No matter how good a musician you are, if you are not prepared to encourage others and learn from them, as well, you are missing something valuable.
Whooops...heavy woffle, sorry!
Good luck, or should that be, break a string(?!) to all those playing on Friday and looking forward to it!
Keep up the good work, Les...I for one, agree with the way performers are all treated equally with regard to time...it is fair and all performers who play there should know the system and stick to it, or not play. Why should someone 'good' be allowed an extra song...then someone who is playing afterwards, have one song cut from their time? There are plenty of acoustic nights and singarounds elsewhere, (and I like going to those, too,) and if not, I guess no one is stopping those who want that, organise another themselves!

Whoops! Just meant to add...(as if I hadn't already said far too much!)...that I wasn't getting at anyone with the above, just my own personal rant at people elsewhere who let their ego get too developed. I think the MRFC has a great ethos and I have only ever seen people supporting each other, there, and having a great time. Long may it continue...NOW I will shut up, lol!

Ah Mrs Rockhen has returned :-)

Its not normal to have PA and I certainly do not want to see it going that way.

However on this occasion, John does a wonderful job on Julie's PA and it is very kind of him to make the offer.

It will be interesting to see what everybody thinks.

If it doesn't work, then we will go back to the old layout of the room.

My arent we all famous?
Another P.A system wow this is spooky went to GrimsbyFC this sunday past and guess what?
There was a P.A! "Oh gosh" thinks I to meself,"guess the poor souls will be able to hear me after all"
But shouldnt have worried twas just young mark Cambell and his pal trying out their new toys to see how it all went together.
Mark is a particular friend of Rockhens as he plays Rosemarys Sister at her request nearly every week at the tap and spile in Grimsby.(The Song, not his equally Famous drag act!)
'tis a brilliant song though makes some people tearful.
So is anyone else sponsering Rocky to do the Brittany Spears song at the Candles out supper at Caister?
It is for a good cause and is very brave of her in this current cold snap!
I have been told that it's the one where Britanee is singing in the bath.
I was hoping fot the knee socks and short skirt one but that just shows me to be of a certain age and nostalgic for my school days in the '70.s.
Still I digress,WIll look forward with immense pleasure to this fridays extravaganza and to seeing you all there in action.

All wrapped up in one what matey?
They all live out in the sticks so nothing would suprise me.
The Gfc was fun.
Not as well attended as the MRFC but the people were very nice and there was a good variety of poetry, unaccompanied singing and the Guitar and singer sort as well.
Yes we did play 2 or 3 and they were even nice about that.
There is also a tendency for members of the audience to sing harmonies and join in which I really like and experienced in Flaxton North Yorks earlier in the Year.
It is fun to go and be allowed to play but it is also great to sit back relax and watch the Pros'get stuck in.

We know mark and Eddy Weeks from the Tap and Spile in Grimsby of course and I could have sworn that a couple of the other faces looked familiar but can only think that they had gotten lost and wondered into town by mistake.
At least that Rockhen doesnt know where it is so not a word to her about it.

Well I'm not famous - just flatulent. Yeah I know, tooo much detail ...

Les is hopefully arranging an early get in for me and my (musically) better half (I'm not allowing her anymore than that).

So:

Any guests who would like a sound check should arrive as early as possible after 7pm. All sound checks to be completed by 7:45pm so the earlier you get there the better.

Anyone who can't make it in time for a sound check can still be recorded if they wish - but we might not get a great recording of the first song and a half !

Huh...Twangy! You wait until I see you, now!
You are destroying my reputation!!!
I am not a Rosemary's Sister Floozie, honest, Strollin'!!!!
Mark only sang it once...and it is a nice song that I haven't heard many times and you did sing it beautifully at the folk club before and and and oh well, I do like rather a lot!
AND Twangy....did you have to mention the outfit yet again, I said there was no way, when you promised 25p for the kneesocks.( By the way , was that 25p per sock?...just wondered...it is all for charity after all...!
IF any one wants to support our gig and can't make it, we are hoping to have a short (live) cd of about 5 songs covered on the night (it is already recorded) available for 'donations' of £1 or above...let me know tomorrow if you would like one, grovel, grovel!

There you go, I notice Julie Ellison write up in the local rag, and Wild Wolds Women etc in the same rag.

What I hadn't noticed, was that my daughter was in a group picture of the Market Rasen Junior Singers that is run by Sue Heron, who is part of the Ceilidh Band called "The Little Band". I watched one of the times and was very impressed indeed with her wonderful skills at teaching them to sing. So Shame on me.

She's not all that peculiar Mike (or all that old for that matter!) LOL!

Weren't it a great night? Julie was her usual brilliant self, and the support artists rose to the challenge and put that bit of extra zing in their performances. Disappointing that some of the earlier performers did their spots and then buggered off. We showed them respect by listening to them, shame they weren't prepared to return the compliment, but c'est la vie (as they say on the planet Zog).

Thanks to the ladies of the 'SJ Fan Club' - as usual you embarrassed me, but I confess that I walked an inch or two taller from that point on! :-) Thanks Rosie and Helen, you're pals!

Excellent vibes from all the people who were there for all the performers, with Julie the icing on the cake.

Yes thanks to all performers, organisers and sound engineers etc...Had a brilliant time. Was nice to figure out who a few mudcatters were, too!
Rosemary's Sister was brilliant, thanks, Strollin'. I loved that song about being 50, really funny, Stitherum, I forgot who you said had written it. Julie was brilliant, as was everyone else, last night. That electric bass was great...good job my other half didn't see it. (He is otherwise engaged, mountain biking in the Lakes...yep... mad fool...but he is a drummer, you know!)He would have wanted one for Christmas! It was a great mix of styles.
It is nicer if performers stay to hear others. I always feel embarrassed if I do have to go early for a reason and I think people are missing out on more than just hearing and supporting other performers because it is great to chat with everyone.
I think, any performer with sense, realises that you can pick up good ideas from others to help keep your own performance ever-fresh and growing. You can also learn how not to perform, though hopefully not at MRFC!

Agree with Strollin' and Rockhen.

It really does please me if performers stay and support each other.

Unfortunately not all performers are like that, and sometimes I have to wrestle with the problem of putting them on. At the end of the day it is a minority issue.

My final decision is swayed by letting the listeners hear these acts.

Its not easy when you are the organiser. So please bear with me performers, I am only trying to do my best for everybody. I love what I do, and need support, not knocking.

I spent from 5 last night to 12:30 ensuring you all had a great time, knowing that my wife could be very ill and that I really should have been with her.

As they say, you can please some of the people some of the time etc etc blah blah blah.

The fact that generally 3/4 of the audience are listeners is a credit to the many and varied performers that appear at the club.

So come on performers, can you stop knocking your fellow colleagues.

I wasn't including the first performers, who as you quite rightly say BBP had other appointments and had asked me to go on first for that reason.

I have to say that if somebody does leave early, I already know about it. So if there is any blame to be laid, it certainly is not at the feet of the performers. They are very open with me.

Sorry to hear that news Les had no idea you had such dire things on your mind,
As always you ran a tight ship and your efforts and the quality of the performances was greatly enjoyable.
I am only a listener but sometimes I have to clear out early'cos of work but I always regret leaving as I am always told in great detail what I have missed and 'tis a bummer.
However as a sitting listening person I would like to say that I have observed that not all serve who only sit and play.(doh!)
The sound was fantastically well done and was just the enhancement that I have previously banged on about, and,Les I think that the sound guy and you proved that when the Techy and the Host(sorry cant spell impressario)take as much care over their "gigs" as these excellent performers do over their performance it raises the whole event above the run of the mill for us attendees.
And all for £3!
Thanks to all.
And best wishes and kind thoughts for those that need 'em.

May I echo Tim's wishes for your wife, you and your family.
The club is of small importance compared to the health of our loved ones...With hindsight and realisation of your natural concern perhaps we should have suggested that you went home and we all mucked in and continued the evening for you. It is easy to think after the event, I, for one, apologise for not being more sensitive and picking up on the situation better. We greatly appreciate the work you put in. I am not creeping or flattering you when I say the club is a credit to your hard work and I wasn't knocking anyone last night. Just making a general observation that you get more out performing if you support others, too.
Thinking of you and your wife and perhaps a few of us could take on some of the organising for Dec 2nd. I am not sure what is involved but maybe we could muck in together so no one has the full responsibilty but some of the pressure is taken off you, Les.

Inge is suffering from bad headaches/pains since last Monday which is not normal and she needs a CT scan. can't get a scan for well over 6 weeks on the NHS. So its a private job and the quicker the better. She is still doing things as normal
It may be nothing at all, but that doesn't mean it isn't worrying. Only got the news yesterday about the scan and it does tend to pull you up in your stride. We haven't said anything to our children, or they would probably freak out.

I am OK about running the club and don't worry about it Rockhen, you weren't to know. In actual fact Strollin' was aware and I had my mobile on. If I had received a call then Strollin' would have handled it.Thanks for that Strollin'. Friday night is my night out and I get a lot of pleasure from it.
However it does put things in perspective, and I realise how vunerable the club is if something happened to me or my family.
If anything happens, I would be grateful for any support.
Basically if I wasn't able to attend for any reason, I need to know that I can call on certain people to do the following.
Meet and greet the performers and make them feel at home.
Meet and greet the audience and ravage their pockets for all the money that they have :-)
Compare the evening making sure the evening starts on time and performers keep to their timings.
Do the raffle in the interval

Generally the Faldingworth committee look after the furniture side etc.

Thank you for all the comments about the PA. We decided earlier this year that the PA (and the interval music!) was an integral part of the Julie Ellison "show", and I am always grateful to organisers who allow us the flexibility to change their normal club practice to accomodate this.

I'm pleased it worked for everyone on the night.

Incidentally, the 'Slow & Fast tune' of Julie's is her version of 'Romanza' (or 'Romance'). Her version is appropriately titled 'Ragtime Romance'. The version she played at Market Rasen is actually a new arrangement, playing the first half of the tune using tremelo rather than straight arpeggio. This was the very first time she had played that arrangement in public. I was quite suprised when she started playing it that way!

Just to add to Les' comment about being there from 5 to 12:30. Les came over early to make sure the heating was on for us while we set up the PA. He didn't have to do that but we were so grateful he did. His attention to detail does him credit.

Similarly, he didn't have to stay until we had packed away, but he did. He is a gent.

Hope Inge is much better very, very soon.

I live in Market Rasen, but haven't come across this person.
However if you have any more details that might help to locate this person, I will do my best to try and find out for you.
I know quite a few locals who would probably know this person if they stayed for a decent time.
When you say Market rasen, do you have any sort of locator, like lived near the racecourse, or festival hall, or Library etc.
Likewise was it in Market rasen itself or one of the small surrounding villages?
He doesn't owe you any money does he LOL :-)
Cheers
