Hello fellow 'catters
This thread has been started so as to tidy the assorted threads relating to our folk music download service.

If you dont know anything yet about Woven Wheat Whispers, I'll give you a quick overview.

The site offers legal paid downloads of folk music in the broadest sense of the term.

1. We actively work with musicians to promote their music by linking their homepage on our site to their own, thus passing on traffic for actual CD sales or publisizing gigs

2. We offer free downloads of demos by new artists to give bookers, A+R, etc the chance to hear your music

3. We offer paid downloads in high quality only

4. We offer highest royalty rates

5. We are dedicated to folk music

6. We directly promote your music to various professionals working in various areas of the folk music industry

When the site lauches to the public on 1st December, we will be offering albums by artists around the world at a cost effective price.

Although we will not add the full range of artists until launch day, you will find a number of artists (and fellow mudcatters) there already.

The site continues to evolve and grow as we move forward.  We are already up to forty-eight releases after existing for only four weeks during this formative period.  By Christmas we should be approaching a hundred albums on the catalogue.   Site users can also now search for artists and find those similar in our catalogue (using the album references) which is natty and should help people find music they like.  We have also launched our new 'folk dance' section and have other releases in this area coming in future weeks.

This week's is a highly diverse set of releases with much that is unique, from the take on folk by Simon Scardanelli, the lush songs of Sal, the stunning Irish drum-folk of Different Drums...., wonderful traditional from Susie Fox, Marrowbones and the song-craft of Ben Sands.
 
A release we highlight this week is the 'Eleanor's Visceral Tomb', a strange name for a wonderfully evocative, strange but accessible album from 'Plough Myth International' label that goes right back to the primitive origins of folk.  It combines the early traditional (pre-Tudor) with the experimental and you really won't have heard a release like it... we struggled even to find comparable references....

Do help us search out not only new artists but out of print albums - if you know anyone who issued a folk album that is out of print, we want to help and build an attractive catalogue for readers of the site.  It costs them nothing and we can get their album back out in circulation, being heard again, generating interest and more importantly....hopefully starting to sell again.
 
Thanks as always for your interest and support.  We now have confirmed articles starting to appear in folk magazines and websites which will further enhance our rapidly growing profile.  You are helping to make this happen and we appreciate your assistance and involvement.   The level of readership of the site even in this early phase grows every week as word spreads ahead of our formal launch and people are buying albums regularly  (one wonderful person bought four in one go!).  Every day new artists get in touch, which is excellent as we want to make this a mutually supportive folk music hub for artists, labels, writers and those who love the music.

The site is growing week by week and we are adding aprox 15 albums a week. Before the end of the year we will be adding a number of albums from one of the finest UK folk guitarists and are currently talking to a couple of major trad / roots labels about securing significant proportions of their back catalogue.

It would seem that artists particularly like working with us as not only do we pay a fair royaly rate, but we actively work to promote their download music (via ourselves), their conventional CD releases (via their websites) and their gigs too.

As we say in my part of England...I'm dead chuffed!

Woven Wheat Whispers - New Albums 20th December 2005

First, a very Merry Christmas / Yule season to all readers. Thanks to the supporters, artists and buyers who have helped us go from an email idea to nearly a hundred albums in the catalogue within just a few weeks. 2006 bodes to be a great year for the service and hopefully for our collaborative efforts to help promote folk music and the community.


For our pre-Christmas selection we have seventeen new albums (plus a free one) from:

First a happy new year to everyone from us at Woven Wheat Whispers.   I'm also pleased to say that amongst our mince pie munching we have been able to get a few albums ready to start the new year off.   These are by:

I was looking around your site last night...wrote a 'post' all about it, but deleted it my mistake! Don't you hate it when that happens...anyway...it was just as well I did, as I didn't know that you already had a thread on Mudcat about it.

I'm most impressed with it all. I was listening to some of the new albums you have, listed above and thought they were great!!

From a non-musician's point of view, but a music-lover's one...this is an excellent way for YOU to get your music out to US.

Fantastic idea from my point of view, in order to hear music that I've never heard before...and I like the info pages that you do on people as well, plus the 3 sample tracks that you provide.

I'm spreading the word about it...and I like the 'forum' you've got for people to leave information on etc.

Thank you for your kind words. Good to know that you are enjoying the site. Regarding the "music companion", this is a continuous audio stream that plays random 1 - 2 minute selections from all the albums we offer. Some you know, others will be new to you. The idea of the random selection is that it means listeners get exposed to music they may not normally choose to listen to.
Regarding Daniel Patrick Quinn. Glad you liked this. His albums are (for me) two of the most exciting folk releases I have recently heard. They are totally unique. Deeply rooted in both the folk tradition and his love of the land, but totally contemporary. He has a unique vision and was rightly lauded in a recent review by The Times (of all places)

Glad you like Dave Gibb too. Have a listen to the "Reivers" sample track on his homepage. Stunning and passionate

There is now over six hours of music in the audio stream, so plenty of new things to here. Luckily their are CD style controls too, so you can skip tracks or jump back should you need to.

Please pop into the forum and say hello when you have a minute. We need active posters who have a love of music, but who are not closed minded or abusive.

...and I read your reviews and listened to all 12 of the sample tracks across his 4 CDs and by the end of them all I was totally hooked! Then I read some of the people who have influenced him:

Archie Fisher Hamish Imlach Ralph McTell Dick Gaughan Matt McGinn Si Khan Dougie McLean

and I nodded my head in understanding over that list and pressed the 'download' button, paid my money...and 20 minutes later I'm now the proud owner of Dave's 'Looking Good..Feeling Better' CD, complete with cover.

And Dave is 'singing in my ears' as I type right now and I've heard the whole story of 'The Black Lady'....and I'm listening to the sadness as her ghost tells her tale. She left the warmth of her homeland in South Africa, after falling in love with a wealthy Scotsman. She returned home with him, but once there, he shut her away from his social circle and eventually ended up killing her....and now she wanders an alien land....entirely on her own.

"..So here I am, where I'm always cold, so cold and so alone and I'm doomed to walk this darkness 'til my soul goes sailing home..."

And how sad to hear her say "....the children they all run in fear, but the grown-ups don't believe..." This poor woman walking the moors and the mountains and the only ones who can see her, who could perhaps reach out, touch her, help her soul to freedom, run away in terror, their parents not even wanting to open their minds at all. Sad how so many of us lose that ability to 'see' as we get older....and are so fearful of it when we're younger. That bit really got me thinking.

And now he's singing 'Lullaby' "See what tomorrow will bring....." which is a good place to end for now, because yesterday I didn't know of this man who is now singing of tomorrows, of soldiers, ghosts and pirates, of bureaucrats, murderers and mercenaries.....and yesterday I had no idea that today my life would be, once again, just a little richer, purely because of someone's music.

The speed and the way in which that 'richness' has been able to get from 'in there' to 'out here'...and to me...has been quite breathtaking and magical!

Thank you for this site Ian, it is truly opening a door to a world that is 'hidden' from many of us...and in a little while when I've finished listening to Dave all over again, I'm going to check out Daniel Patrick Quinn's page in order to "...see what tomorrow will bring..."

We are really proud of this selection, from name artists like Tudor Lodge to emerging artists with lots of press coverage like Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe.   We have two stunning Irish folk albums, innovative singer songwriters like Safe Home, crafted folk-pop from the Czech Republic and the neo-medievalism and folk of Drohne. A particularly distinctive release is the absolutely unique and somewhat disturbing English Heretic album.

As always free promo releases for review are always available just ask via the 'contact' link at the site (not by reply to this email) and we'll send you a free link. New artists always continue to be sought for current, forthcoming and back catalogue releases in the UK and around the world.   Feel free to post this email, forward it and distribute around the industry, on your web sites, blogs etc (and if you do, you count as a promoter)..

The second Podcast is now released by 'Folkcast' which includes lots of WWW artists plus a special FolkYear section prepared by us with our music behind it.
