Subject: Need songs for, of, and/or about England From: GUEST,Guest Date: 17 Nov 05 - 07:43 PM I've got a couple of gigs coming up where the focus of the performance is to be England - any era, any time frame and any aspect of her culture, society, etc. I've got some songs lined up but cannot help but believe that there are more out there that I do not know about - even Christmas songs. This is such a great site and I thought you all might be helpful. Thanks a bag full. |

Subject: RE: Need songs for, of, and/or about England From: GUEST,Guest Date: 17 Nov 05 - 10:56 PM Well, you know, I really don't have very many "songs" that are truly about England - it's more a song from "wherever" with a story attached that is about, or concerns England. Here's what I've got so far: House At Pooh Corner (along with the story about the gentleman from the house of commons who appealed to the U.S. congress to get Pooh and the other animals returned to England - he failed) Ambletown Fires Of Calais My Bonnie (which may not be English but is associated with England) Blacks and Tans (with an explaination about who they were, etc.) Old Carrion Crow (Scottish actually, but originally a political song about the crown and a religious sect) Fields Of Athenry (along with a bit of Irish/English history) John Riley (either Irish or English - I've heard both) Bard Of Armagh (with long history story of the origins of this song and it's off-shoots) London Homesick Blues (home with the armadillo - it's about London!) All of these tunes can be related to England, but I'm looking for something more,...??? Hey, I know, "I'm Henry the VIII I am, Henry the VIII I am, I am. I got married to the girl next door,...." I'll be doing some Christmas songs, too, and I haven't looked at those yet, so maybe I'll have enough. I'll still take any help, though. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Need songs for, of, and/or about England From: Richard Bridge Date: 17 Nov 05 - 11:08 PM Poverty Knocks. Benbow. Anything rude about the French. Almost anything Martin Carthy ever recorded. Byker Hill. Colonel Bogie. Any Child's Ballad. Over the Hills and Far away. Sweep. The Gay Fusilier. The Princess Alice. Rigs of the Times. The Nutting Girl. Anything from the Copper Family. A fox-hunting song - preferably not John Peel. A song about transportation to the Antipodes (Watersons do a number of them) I'm sure I could go on, but my insomniac episode may be waning... |

Drinking songs are a good bet - "Drink Old England Dry" or "Fathom The Bowl". Military or recruiting songs like "Rout of The Blues", "High Germany". Rural idylls like "Foggy Dew" (not the Irish rebel song) and "Pratty Flowers". Old broadsides like "Maria Marten" or "Jack Hall". The list is endless ... You could even sing some traditional Norfolk songs like "The Black Velvet Band" or "The Wild Rover" ;-) |
