I think it starts 'Do you want to play a guitar, carry pennies home in a jar - -'

Any takers?

Scotus,

Just a side note. The owner of "Swinging on a Star" has refused to grant permission for use of this song. Probably not a problem if you perform it, but don't put it on a CD. Mike Agranoff of New Jersey had prepared to put it on his CD. He didn't write for permission until the art work had already been done. So his CD "Or would you rather get a job" does not have on it the song referenced in the title.

Mike's a great guy. I tell this story just to warn others that copyright can make a difference and that using a tune does not make the song a parody (where permission wouldn't be needed).

"The owner of "Swinging on a Star" has refused to grant permission for use of this song. "

Hmmm... I thought those were called "mandatory licenses," though that would apply only to the original, not a parody. I think, even then, you have a case, parody being allowed by copyright laws (though other uses, such as satire*, are not allowed). You'd have to credit the original songwriter as well as the parody's lyricist, but you could not be successfully sued by the copyright owner.

Then again, it's that "successfully" part when it's a lawsuit you're defending yourself from. An annoyance, but an expensive one, even if at the end you win and get your legal fees paid. It's still mostly not worth it.

Bob Clayton

* The difference, believe it or not, is that parody makes fun of the original song, while satire makes fun of someone/something else. So political songs to well-known tunes are "satire," unless all you change is a few words ("Bourgeois Blues" to "Bush-War Blues" might fit, for instance). It's a strange hair to split, but split it they do, and some of the sillier lawsuits have been over copyright (like the rock performer sued for sounding too much like his early catalog, which was owned by a different publisher than his current songs).

Oops - small keys, big fingers.

Regards ownership - if you have lots of money, like U2, take on the PRS or whoever. Otherwise do it live only.

However, why would you want to?

I've heard some really rubbish parodies but this one would rank as one of the worst.
