My engine is running really slowly so I can't search. So if this has been discussed ad nauseam in here, (and I would have thought it would have), apologies.

I have just heard this track sung by Beth Neilsen Chapman on the radio, its from a contemporary anthology of Stephen Foster and it is brilliant.

Not sure if it is the song, the singer or the combination, but I loved it, (on the radio). The chords are very much a secondary issue, but if anyone has any, as I've said in here more times than I care to remember, I have blind ears.

But really wanted to share about the track and hear anything anyone can tell me about the album or the singer.

cheers

R

She has a website, http://bethnielsenchapman.com
On the cd "Beautiful Dreamer"
Her latest cd is a collection of Latin Hymns, on her own (BNC Records) label. Her website mentions sheet music, so it may be available for this song from her.
She supports herself in Nashville as a songwriter.

"In the Eye Abides the Heart" is a translation, by Stephen C. Foster (1851) of a German composition, "In den Augen liegt das Herz," words by Franz von Kobell (1841), to a melody by Franz Wilhelm Abt, Opus 54, no. 1.

Original poem, with melody, and translations by Stephen C. Foster, and by George Linley: http://ingeb.org/Lieder/indenaug.html

Lyr. Add: In den Augen liegt das Herz
Melody Franz W. Abt, lyrics Franz von Kobell 1841

In den Augen liegt das herz,
In die Augen mußt du sehen,
Willst die Mädchen du verstehen,
Werben um der Liebe Scherz.

Merke was das Auge spricht,
In das Auge mußt Du fragen;
Was mit Worten sie du sagen,
Freund, das ist das Beste nicht!

Refrain:
In den Augen liegt das Herz,
Ja, die Augen mußt du fragen,
Ja, in die Augen mußt du fragen,
In den Augen liegt das Herz.

O es ist ein lieblich Spiel,
Wenn die Augen sich belauschen,
Forschend ihre Blicke tauschen,
Keine Rede sagt so viel.

Sonnenlichtes Farbenschein,
Kündet sich dir im Juwele,
Farben aus dem Sitz der Seele,
Zeigt das Auge nur allein.

Refrain:

Wenn es schwärmt und wenn es lacht,
Wenn es schüchtern freundlich bittet,
Liebend strahlt und fein gesittet,
O wie schön's die Mädchen macht!

Drum verletze frevelnd nicht,
Schenkt das Auge dir Vertrauen,
Kannst den Himmel ja nicht schauen,
Trüben Tränen dort das Licht.

Mag die Sternenwelt untergehn,
Will darüber wenig rechten,
Darf ich nur in stillen Nächten
Liebchens Augensterne sehn.

Lyr. Add: IN THE EYE ABIDES THE HEART
Translation: Stephen C. Foster, 1851

In the eye abides the heart,
Every pure and tender feeling,
All emotions worth revealing,
Through the eyes their charm impart.
Words are often clothed in guile;
For the lips with fear may falter;
E'en confiding smiles may alter-
Oh! believe not in a smile!

Refrain:
'Tis the eye unveils the heart.
Every pure and tender feeling,
All emotion worth revealing,
To the eyes their glow impart.

If thy bosom heaves a sigh
For a fair and cherished maiden,
Though her voice with love be laden,
Mark the language of her eye
There each impulse of her soul
Beams for thee in truth and candor;
There her secret passions wander
There remains beyond control.
Refrain:

A second translation by George Linley (Through the Eyes the Heart Doth Speak) at the website.

The German lyrics posted above have (very) few mistakes. When in doubt, see the correct German lyrics given in the link at the end of Q's post.

Thanks for the lyrics and the link, Q. I've listened to the melody, and it's nice to have a new tonality for my repertoire.

From Harvey B. Gaul, The Minstrel of the Alleghenies (Pittsburgh, Pa., Friends of Harvey Gaul, Inc., 1934), p. 46:
Dutchtown was only a stone's throw from Stephen's home and with Henry Kleber's help he translated and arranged Franz Abt's In den Augen liegt das Herz, which was published by Firth, Pond under the title, In the Eye Abides the Heart.

Someone asked for the chords for this interesting melody. I've downloaded it from this website

http://ingeb.org/Lieder/indenaug.html

The MIDI on that site has an introduction (to get dancers onto the floor) and, I believe, a coda. I don't have time to match the words to the tune, but I believe that's what's going on. The coda ends with a bunch of G chords after the 16th notes. Then the tune repeats.

I could never play it as fast and with as many chord changes as they have on the site. Also, there are some pile-ups which may simply be mistakes. So I've been playing the song at my piano, and I have come up with simpler chords.

Keep in mind that the original in the key of G is too high to sing and that citrusy dissonances are common in old waltz tunes.

I've combined three threads on this song, all started this week - a chords request, a lyrics add, and a chords add. It makes much more sense to have them all together in the same thread. No need to start a new thread for each function.
