Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: katlaughing Date: 05 Dec 05 - 06:42 PM Thank yew!! That is wonderful!! I love these quotes: Nine out of ten, that's good enough for folk music... Referring to donor matching. None of Travers relatives were a close enough match to make the transplant work. But through a national registry of bone marrow donors, doctors found someone whose marrow matched Travers' marrow in In April. Travers underwent the transplant. She does not know who donated the marrow. "Whoever she was, she did a good job,'' Travers said. Cooper, of Danbury Hospital, said that even five years ago, Travers might not have been considered a candidate for a bone marrow transplant because of her age. But because of dramatic improvements in patient care and in the delivery of the marrow, age is much less of a factor today. "Along with chronological age, you look as things like general health and will and enthusiasm,'' Cooper said. "But the techniques have improved tremendously.'' Travers also received intensive chemotherapy, treatment that leaves many patients drained and nauseous. But Travers — who wore a "Chemo Sabe" T-shirt at Sloan-Kettering — said the treatments didn't bother her much. "I have good innards,'' Travers said. "That made a big difference.'' |

Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: JennyO Date: 05 Dec 05 - 08:13 PM Oh, that's fantastic! It was PP&M who first gave me a love of folk music. In the sixties, as a teenager, I wore my hair long and blonde, like Mary, and tried to emulate her. I still remember their excellent concert in the Sydney Stadium - I think it was about '62 or '63. I have all their early records and I still love their music! Looking at the pictures, the hair may be different, but she's still got that 'Mary' smile I remember. I'm sure the life-force that comes shining through helped a lot in her recovery. May she keep on singing for many years yet! I wish they would come to Australia again. I'd be first in the queue for tickets! Jenny |

Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: Pauline L Date: 06 Dec 05 - 03:17 AM Mary Katherine, thanks for passing on the good news. I am so glad that the news is good. One of my friends died of acute myelocytic leukemia, the kind Mary had, in 1982, three days before his fortieth birthday. He was not evem a candidate for a marrow transplant at that time because he was too old. Health care technology has improved a lot since then. I am still grieving for him. I'm glad that Mary is till alive and well enough to perform again. |

Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Mar 08 - 01:50 PM This from their website: February 06, 2008 Mary Travers has undergone two back surgeries. While her doctors anticipate a full recovery, the healing process is taking longer than hoped. On her doctor's advice, regrettably, the Trio will have to cancel their upcoming concerts. Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jul 09 - 05:55 PM Mary hasn't looked healthy since the late 1980's, so I'm surprised that she's continued on so long. I've seen photos of her sitting in a chair during their 2008 concerts. It seems a shame, for a woman who was once so vivacious. I hope that she enjoys her retirement and returns to good health. Peter looks prety good, but certainly shows signs of aging. They're all about the same age, but Noel (Paul) looks ten years younger than the other two. Perhaps it's all that healthy Maine living. We have a number of Mudcatters who seem to thrive on Maine living. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: Janie Date: 22 Jul 09 - 10:52 PM http://www.peterpaulandmary.com/tour/f-tour-spring.htm Lauren, I notice that you never create a link. If you click on the "Make a link ("blue clicky") under the dialogue box, you will find it is incredibly easy to do. Instead of cutting and pasting your link to the dialog box, cut and paste it to the box in the link maker, then cut and paste it to the dialog box as instructed in the link maker. |
Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: Janie Date: 22 Jul 09 - 11:13 PM Haven't done my homework. I noticed the oxygen also. Was she performing with the oxygen? |
Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jul 09 - 12:41 AM I thought at first that it was one of those microphones that clips to your ear or the back of your head, but it's definitely an oxygen tube. That's so sad. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mary Travers medical update, photos From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 23 Jul 09 - 03:28 AM I think Mary Travers is still very beautiful. She's also very brave and deeply loved by thousands and thousands of people too, which is reflected in the happiness inside her eyes, and her steely determination to have continued performing publicly for as long as she has done, for them, as much as for herself. Peter, Paul and Mary are a part of my life. I grew up with their music, would spend hours singing along to their songs. I loved Mary's grace, her wonderful long hair and her huge smile. All three of them seemed very sweet and caring people. For any woman, as she gets older, performing publicly must become very hard, because women are judged far more on their looks than men are, sadly. But Mary Travers is someone a bit special, isn't she, not only because she's never given in to that fear of ageing so publicly, but because that gorgeous smile of hers has never dimmed. In fact, it's got even brighter. And neither ill-health, oxygen tubes or wheelchairs, have dimmed that smile, or kept her from her public. She's an inspiration, not only to other leukaemia sufferers, but to women (and men) in general, because she proves that Beauty is far more than just Skin Deep. So, thank you, Mary, for all the joy you've given to so many people in your life. |
