How about The Garten Mother's Lullaby, The Corries on "Strings and Things" There's a very old album if you can get hold of it called Glasgow Street songs by Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor, it really is very old but it has some fine children's songs on it such as "Ye cannae shover yer grannie off a bus"! For new, fun songs, it's worth looking for tapes by Tom Pease (your library might have some). We have been particularly fond of "I'm gonna reach" and "Boogie! Boogie! Boogie!". I've ordered from Tomorrow River Music in Madison, Wisconsin (Box 165, 53701; phone: [phone]).

There are also lots of good books of kids songs (and even more mediocre books, but that goes with the territory). Again, a library is likely to have a few. I've used Milton Okun's "Giant book of children's songs" as a decent compendium of middle of the road american stuff (five, count them, five, versions of "Puff"), which I got from Elderly Instruments, in Lansing, Michigan.

I would be interested in any suggestions that people have about books of kids songs from countries other than the U.S.

Golden Bough issued a CD called "Celtic Songs For Children" or s.th. like that. Though the songs are not authentical neither do they sound so, the CD is worth listening to. We now have two songs from it in our repertoire, after playing them just for fun and now having requests every time on stage.

You might want to look at Peter and Iona Opie's wonderful book The Lore and Language of School Children (Oxford University Press). Should be available in your library. Also, Ewan MacColl and Dominic Behan traded kids' street songs on a Folkways album 'way back when. Should be available from Smithsonian/Folkways, on cassette, at least.

The record I referred to in the above post is titled The Singing Streets, Childhood Memories of Ireland and Scotland (Folkways FW 8501). I note that it was released "by arrangement with Topic Records, England," so it may also be available from them. The entire Folkways catalog, however, is available in one format or another from Smithsonian/Folkways. Look 'em up on the Web.

There's been a thread on this topic running over on uk.music.folk . . . for traditional material the recommendation is certainly "The singing kettle".

For more modern "stuff" the best has not yet surfaced here; for those with any "social" concern the definitive recording of songs for children has to be Roy Bailey's "Why does it have to be me" (I posted contact/ordering info. for Roy in the "good modern folkies" thread). While for good songs, good tunes and much enjoyment Hilary James and Simon Mayor's "Musical Mystery Tour" is VERY hard to beat - my 19 year old daughter STILL occasionally launches into the songs she picked up from it . . As for printed sources, Peggy Seeger & Ewan MacColl's "Singing Island" includes a short but excellent section of Children's Songs.

Gosh this is nice that my thread has resurfaced after a year! I am very pleased to get your recommendations. Looks like I'll be buying some more CD's. Best children's record I've ever come across was Roy Bailey (with Val Bailey, and Leon Rosselsson) "Oats and Beans and Kangaroos", issued by Fontana many many years ago (SFL13061 859028 FZY). It's got Why Does it Have to be Me, and lots more, including a wonderful Three Ravens (the non-cynical version).

I am forever looking through used book stores for books of printed songs. Children's songs, especially from old school books, are often available. I also recommend looking at Hilary James and Simon Mayor who did lots of stuff for children on BBC. They are esay to find on the web by almost any search engine.

Neither of mine ever cared of it was "Kid Music" or not, just give 'em some of the real thing, you'll be suprised at how much of it they actually get. My daughter knew about the Easter Rising before she was 10--whose fault is THAT?
