Subject: John Westland From: Hovering Bob Date: 09 Dec 05 - 04:07 PM I am afraid that I have just received the sad news that my old playing partner John Westland died of a heart attack suddenly on Wednesday, 7th December 2005. Along with his other ongoing health problems John had been suffering from what was believed to be angina. He was well known in the Reading area and a regular member of several local folk clubs, entertaining his audiences with a multitude of instruments and some weird and original props, all of which he made himself. He was a talented singer and wrote some hilarious songs and parodies, a fitting vehicle for his wicked sense of humour. We performed together as "Half Cut and Dried" for several years but I was only one of several playing partners that John had over the years. He was also a good friend to others in times of need, as I know only too well. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The folk world has lost a great character. |

Subject: RE: John Westland From: trayton Date: 10 Dec 05 - 05:48 AM Sad, sad news. John was a truly original entertainer when he came to a folk club you knew you were in for something you just didn't know what. The Maidenhead folk club song competition will never be the same again. Malcolm |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Westland (7 Dec 2005) From: The Admiral Date: 13 Dec 05 - 08:58 AM Pearl and I are stunned by the news, John lived just round the corner from us (indeed he helped us in a couple of household projects) and we had no idea that he had angina let alone the possibility of a heart attack. Trayton is right, he will be missed at Maidenhead Folk Club, his irregular visits were usually accompanied by an exploding guitar or some other such irreverent nonsense! It is sad when a real character leaves, let's hope we can get him a good send off... Tony and Pearl |
