Just read this and it seems a damn shame! at www.folklib.net. This is such an incredible resource.

12-06-2005: As of this moment, I do not know how I can continue maintaining this website. With barely two weeks notice, effective Dec. 15th, http://www.dls.net/ (DLS Internet Services), will delete my OpenVMS login account and access to the EVE/TPU editor used to edit all these pages, decommission their Server, and drop all VMS support. I can find no other Internet Provider that offers OpenVMS login accounts. My attempt to buy a personal Alpha WorkStation running OpenVMS from HP, has come up empty. I do not know what model to buy and the HP Help Staff and their Resellers have been giving me the runaround for a week. As of 12-15-2005, I will be unable to edit any of the almost 700 web pages here. Unfortunately, this will also add a delay of an undetermined amount of time in writing and publishing my book. Thank you for visiting my website over the past ten years since 11-25-1995.

So.... among all the desperation, I can't see what help they're asking.....

"They" aren't, specifically, Susan. I took it upon myself to use the word "help" when I read this in the above:

"I can find no other Internet Provider that offers OpenVMS login accounts. My attempt to buy a personal Alpha WorkStation running OpenVMS from HP, has come up empty. I do not know what model to buy and the HP Help Staff and their Resellers have been giving me the runaround for a week."

In other words, what you're asking is if anyone knows of a company offering the sevices that folklib.net needs?

I guess so, Stephen. I just figured, stupid me, I guess, there are so many on here who tried to help record lady and others who've had trouble with hosting sites, that someone would understand what I meant and maybe have some ideas.

I am sorry I asked, now.

Kat, I wasn't trying to jump up your butt about it; it's just that we aren't mindreaders. Are they asking for help? Have they already made and implemented the decision to close down? Are there other people working on solutions who we would want to cooperate with rather than either posting info they will not see, or that might get in the way of their own efforts? Who would be the person to contact?

These are the kinds of details that would make real help possible. I was hoping that you might have them.... or was it your plan to direct them here to see the replies?

How about just inviting them to come say what help they would appreciate?

Sorry I set you off,

~Susan

Don't know, don't know, don't know. All I know is what I posted. There IS a link which folks could follow if they are intersted in doing more.

I was merely pointing out what I'd found.

Thanks,

kat

Understood, kat. Thank you for pointing it out. These things DO need to be brought the everyone's attention.

kat that's certainly a wonderful site. Hope they find some way to keep it going. Wish I would have known about it earlier.

Good thing you pointed that out, Kat. We can probably make PermaThreads out of Doug's information, if he wants. He's a Mudcat member already. Here's the e-mail I sent him:
    Hi, Doug -
I'm sorry to see you're having problems with folklib. I think most of your pages could be posted as threads at the Mudcat Cafe, if you like. I can make it so you can edit things if you need to. It's not exactly the way you have things running now, but it might work for you.
Let me know if that would help.

That's great, Joe, thanks! I thought he was a member but wasn't sure.

Thanks, everyone. Sorry if I sounded grumpy about it.

Same goes for other folk sites that have problems. We'll figure out how to host them. We've done that for the Bruce Olson Website and for the Jumprope Hypertext Archive. We want to make sure this wonderful information doesn't die.
Oh, and so you know - it's Jeff who does the work on these. My technical expertise is well-nigh nonexistent.
