For the benefit of Sheffield area folkies. For our Xmas thrash on Tuesday 20th Dec.Kiveton Park F.C. should have had Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher as guests but unfortunately they've had to cancel due to a bereavement (Bill's dear old mum). However, we've now got the brilliant COCKERSDALE coming and it should be a good knees-up. Great harmony singing of original and trad. songs with a few carols into the bargain! There'll be festive grub, seasonal cheer will abound, the beer's cheap and the crowd are as friendly as you'll find anywhere. So come along, all are welcome. Get yer vocal chords oiled and be prepared to get yer gob oppen in a chorus or three.

Regards
Andy

To Busy Bee Paul (and anyone else!)

Two things our website doesn't tell you are the kick-off time and the price, so here goes.
Kick-off will be at 8.45.
Entrance fee will be £3. A bargain!

Regards

Andy

Little wonder we don't get young people interested in folk music. 8:45 kick off, and they've got school the next day.

Is the previous post by John Rouse a wind-up or what? I hope so, or does the man not realise that people have more committments in life than simply running a folk club? As sole organiser of the aforementioned club I would like to point out to John that I hold down a job, and don't get home from work till 5.00pm. My wife, Sue who runs the bar, is in the nursing profession doesn't get home until 7.00pm, after a long hard day. She then needs to shower, change, have a bite to eat and we hope to get to the club premises by 8.00. (note, no time for a half-hour nod in the armchair). We are in cricket club premises which are not usually open on Tuesday night, so we need to unlock the place, arrange tables and chairs, turn beer on, organise the bar and do countless other jobs, so that we're ready for the regulars to arrive, which is usually whilst these things are being done. The regulars,(many who work also) by the way, often help in these chores as they arrive. In an ideal world I would be of independent means and be able to devote my life to running the club. Then I could open at, say, 7.00 and cater for all the eager kids who want to take part in live music sessions. Unfortunately we're in the real world! I run the cheapest, best value club in the area and it's probably one of the most popular and well frequented weekly clubs around, from what people say, but I'm not God, or a miracle worker and can only do so much! It may be a pity about the youngsters, but I would question how many of these, needing their beauty sleep, will still be engrossed in computer games etc. way into the late hours anyway? However, after all that, COCKERSDALE will still be at Kiveton Park F.C. on Tuesday 20th Dec. AND kick-off will still be at 8.45 (sharp!)

Regards Andy

Good for you Andy I wondered what he was chewing on about!!!
always had a good evening at your club and if we got there early, being relative strangers, we just waited for things to start! I'm sure your organisation and effort spent on the Club are appreciated by the regulars.

Best Wishes for Chritsmas and Happy New Year.

What John Rouse could perhaps do, if he really wants to come is persuade his dad to bring him along till half time. he'll still have a rattling good night and some sleep. When I was a child I seemed to manage without sleep better than I do nowadays.

Seriously though, children are always welcome at folk clubs, with the possible exception of babes in arms who cry all the time. Most of them however always seemed to have been dragged along by a parent, convinced that his or her protege is the next Tom Paxton or Bob Dillon. You don't see many of them emulating Fred Jordan, mores the pity. (No money in it).

When I was running a Scout Troop we met on Friday nights because of homework and school factors. Suggesting other nights, because I might occasionally have liked to go to a club on a Friday, was too unpopular to have worked.I would suggest that parents look for clubs at the weekend. Most singers clubs tend to meet on less popular nights when there is less competition.

If John is serious about this, why doesn't he start his own club. Lots of people would be only to pleased to come along now and again for a good cause.

Save me a seat on Tuesday please.

Take no notice of the baiters Andy, we know that you do a great job and have a brilliant club with a very warm and friendly membership. Certainly one of the best in the area. Just do it your way and keep up the good work.

Has John Rouse investigated the many happenings in this area? Look at "Stirrings" magazine or the South Riding Folk Art Network to see what's what. There are lots of events that take place during the day, the recent Kelham Island Christmas market and Sheffield folk festival at the end of October to name two, Wickersley free folk day etc. These are all suitable for youngsters and take place during the day/weekends. However, why not come for a short while to Kiveton Park Folk Club, it's a great club, lots of friendly people, excellent peformers and good food every week. You would be made very welcome.

Well I remember an evening in the early 1980s at Kiveton Park Folk Club when Father Kenneth Loveless came to play concertina - I was probably 12 and the club still met at the now boarded up Lord Conyers Arms in Wales Square. Father Ken let me hold and attempt to play William Kimber's anglo at half-time.
"Staying up" was obviously detrimental to my education both academic and musical. With a degree and a DMS, I now also play anglo concertina and melodeon and sing in two "folk" groups. Without people like Andy and before him Dave and many others keeping this club going I wouldn't have had opportuninty or benefit of the influence of such fine performers.
So thanks to all at Kiveton Park - past and present -I hope you have a great night on Tuesday and Happy Christmas :-)

Sounds like Concertina Ceol ought to come along one night for a nostalgia trip. There's always variety at Kiveton and often blasts from the past. Dave comes quite often along with other old names such as Ernie and Roy.

Perhaps John Rouse should change his name to John Grouse and become a professional moaner.
Anyways as the previous posters have said there are lots of suitable folky goings on for children (including Kiveton Park Folk Club) which I am sure they would enjoy and hopefully contribute to.
So they would have to forego TV & the puter for a change (shame) they are our future and it would be great if they could be encouraged to participate in this great heritage called folk music ( like history at school set to a tune).
I'll shut me gob until I and see ya all at Kiveton Park Folk Club on Tuesday 20th December at 8.45pm sharp where we'll be entertained by Cockersdale and other local folk heroes.

You've seen the rest now come & see the best.

Happy Christmas & A Healthy & Prosperous New Year.
