Subject: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: GUEST,Pavane at work Date: 15 Dec 05 - 10:42 AM I will be coming to Amsterdam to work for some months, starting Monday next - 19th. Are there any 'catters there? Is there a folk scene midweek there? I will be gong home at weekends, at least that is the intention. (Don't yet know if I will have web access or email there.) |

Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: pavane Date: 15 Dec 05 - 07:16 PM Thanks, I will try it, but it may not be what I am looking for |
Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: Zany Mouse Date: 15 Dec 05 - 07:51 PM I did manage to find folk music in Amsterdam but it was some years ago. All I did was pop into some of the bars around Dam Square and the railway station (big hardship!) and asked. It only took a few bars before I found good, live music. If you are willing to stand up and sing (trad used to go down well) then you will find the wonderful Dutch folkies will take you to their hearts. Good luck and enjoy a warm and friendly country. Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: Rasener Date: 16 Dec 05 - 02:11 AM Pavane I suggetsed that place as you would be able to talk to them and find out if they know of other places that suit your style. |
Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: GUEST,pavane Date: 16 Dec 05 - 03:58 AM Villan, Yes, thanks, I did say I would try it. Zany Mouse, I don't know yet if I will be able to carry instruments on my weekly commute, but I do play traditional music. Singing is NOT my main skill (I leave that to the other half), but I do know a few songs. I expect to be staying near the centre of town, at least at first. |

I remember seeing a group called The Exiles in the early 1970s, supporting Stefan Grossman in Essex (Tony Maloney's club). Probably not the same ones though. I will be home Friday anyway, and not back here until the New Year. |

Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: sian, west wales Date: 16 Jan 06 - 05:06 PM I expect to be in Amsterdam sometime in April. But tell me: is there no such thing as DUTCH traditional music to be had there??????? siân |
Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: pavane Date: 17 Jan 06 - 01:56 AM Shame, I will definitely be gone by then. But, no, I have never heard of any Dutch tradition. OK, I have only been here a couple of weeks, and working from 8am to 7pm, so I haven't had much chance to look! |

Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: GUEST,bas_ten_asbroek@yahoo.com Date: 18 Jan 06 - 04:19 AM There is plenty of folk music in Amsterdam. Use google to find the website of Eltjo Toorn, there you will finfd it all. And contact me if you are in for a session of traditional irish songs. Regards, Bas ten Asbroek |
Subject: RE: Any 'catters in Amsterdam? From: Rasener Date: 18 Jan 06 - 04:41 AM I had a look at that, but most of it tends to be British, American origin. Is there and what is Dutch Traditional Music? When I lived in Amsterdam, the music that seemed to stand out, was in the cafes and the musicians seemed to be playing accordion/keyboard and singing in a style similar to Herman van Veen, Vader Abraham etc. |
