Where can I go to a singaround on a Friday night near Guilford. Any suggestions would be gratly appreciated

Well, having checked my list (which may or may not be current), the only sing I found on a Friday near Guildford was for 1st Fridays (Cranleigh FC) at the Three Compasses, Dunsfold Road, Alford.

Haven't been, (though I've meant to) so perhaps you could check with the pub so you don't have a wasted journey? Let me know how you get on if you go. Hmm... Why only Fridays?

Topsie,I know that the link will spell it out, but maybe you should have said that the event in Guildford on January 6th is actually Twelfth Night - the wassailers process round several pubs in the middle of the town - the King and Queen of Misrule are chosen in the Star first, and the Guildford Mummers' play is then performed in each pub in turn, with, at the end of each performance of the play, a mass rendition of three (or thereabouts) carols takes place -carols sung vary from pub to pub. Great fun, but definitely NOT a singaround! I live in Guildford, and I can't say that I know of any singarounds in this general area (as such) that take place on a Friday. There are some in Godalming, a few miles down the road, on, I think, a Wednesday, but as yet I haven't been to one of those.

Last I heard the every Wednesday in Godalming was at the Freeholders, having moved from another pub I can't remember the name of....

Last I heard it had moved from the Freeholders following a change of landlord, but I don't know where (or even if) it happens now.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and very nice to hear from Splottman [...hope all is still thriving at Llantrisant]. I asked about Fridays cos thats when I found some free time, but any other info re- other sings in the area would be well appreciated also

Thanks GUEST, I won't worry about trying the Freeholders then.... Another on my list is the Star in Church St Godalming which was every Monday - has that moved?

GUEST puck, sorry not much has come up for Fridays, but please post here if you check out the Alfold 1st Friday.

The other Friday stuff on my list are in Claygate, Teddington, New Malden & Southampton, so they probably aren't much help - sorry!

The Ram Club is the Friday event in Claygate, and is not a singaround. If you're looking for a club in Guildford, Puck, then once a month (usually) on Friday, there is the club held in the Guildford Institute in Ward Street. Previously called the Good Old Way Club, it is changing its name to The Music Institute in January. Details can be found at http://electricvoices.org
Be warned, though, that there is very little opportunity to sing, other than in choruses, as the club has to run to a very tight time schedule (having to be completely clear and out by 11 pm!)

Usually at the Music Institute (nee Good Old Way Club) where I'm one of the two resident singers and a seasoned raffle ticket seller!! Otherwise, generally in sessions at festivals etc or where any other opportunities arise. I shall, however, be out with the wassailers in Guildford on Friday 6th. Glad to see you'll be checking out Electric Voices - you'll find that Lawrence Heath who runs the whole bangshoot (which incorporates concerts at the Electric Theatre in Guildford, the Cranleigh Arts Centre, and the Guildford Institute (also Farnham Maltings in April) has some VERY good artists lined up for the next six months, beginning with the Tabbush Sisters in concert at Cranleigh on January 7th, and Ed Rennie and Jackie Oates at the club in Guildford at the end of the month. Hope to see you at the club sometime.

Glad you posted that Morticia - I didn't have any details..... when I get some transport, who knows, I might get down there!! (Although I'm unfortunately involved with choral singing on a Thursday in the near future). By the way, Puck, if it's not just Fridays, there is a club in Byfleet on Thursday nights as well, which has singarounds - don't have the details to hand at the moment, but I expect if you google for it, it should turn up!

Thank you surreysinger for the time and trouble you have taken, I live at Bramley nr Guildford and will be sure to introduce myself to you at The Music Institute when I call in. I have downloaded a membership form already but being an idle type will probably not get round to posting it.

My pleasure P.... but do make sure before turning up that tickets are available. As tickets are sold in advance it may not always be possible to turn up on the door without one (out of the three evenings we've had at the Institute so far two have been sold out in advance). I gather from Lawrence that he's already had several more applications for membership and tickets for Ed Rennie's night after Christmas... so hopefully we'll be on line to have a full house again!!! If you don't want to buy in advance, I'd strongly suggest ringing up on the day to check that tickets will be available on the door .... or printing off the form and sending it in!! Incidentally, for Martin Carthy's gig in June tickets will only be available to members, and on sale at the club nights from January onwards... another good reason for becoming a member, I would think (:o)
Look forward to seeing you there, and, come to that, anyone else who wants to join and come along of course!!!
