Subject: Scotland in August
From: dulcimer42

I'm planning a trip to Scotland next August, for about 2 weeks. Before deciding upon actual dates, I'd love to find out where and when any music events might be taking place. I plan on going to the Tatoo in Edinburg. Other than that, I need your help! What would you recommend? Thanks so much for your help!

Actually, I meant for this thread title to be: Scotland next August.

Fixed for you

And I'm sure you meant the Tattoo in EdinburgH, d42! But anyway, wait until nearer the time, and check on the "Guides" section of the Footstompin' website. Hope you have a nice time.

There's a lot on around the area in The Fringe which has it's own web site nearer the time. I am 150 miles north of Edinburgh but all Mudcatters are welcome.
Giok

You'll need to learn how to say 'Edin-borough'.

Thanks to whoever fixed my wrong month in the thread title! And thanks to the rest of you for your advice. I found the Footstompin website and have saved it for future reference. I'll now do the same for the Fringe, if I can find it.    I just don't want to make the same mistake I did this year. Took my first trip to Ireland, got nice and reasonable tickets on Aer Lingus.... and once I got there, I discovered that if I'd have only gone a week earlier....    So this time, I want to find out what's happening when, and THEN book my flight!!    I appreciate all your help.

The TMSA festival calendar is usually quite comprehensive and it will be published on the TMSA website in the New Year. Festivals that usually take place in August are Auchtermuchty (not too far from Edinburgh), the Common Ground, Marymass, and Innerleithen, again not far from Edinburgh.

There was a good programme of music on during the Fringe this year. The website is here.

You will be there when the heather is in bloom. You will never forget that trip! The country is beautiful, and the Scots are friendly and funny.

Heather is in bloom nearly all year round. There isn't much of it in Edinburgh.

Skip the Tattoo and go to Auchtermuchty. Perth Highland Games is the same weekend if you're into that sort of thing (you can sometimes get to the last few events at Perth after Muchty finishes).

The TMSA website is www.tmsa.info.

There has been more folk/trad stuff in the Fringe and the International Festival in recent years, but it's expensive.

Pick up a copy of the Gig Guide when you get here (free in any pub with leaflet rack), it lists most of the regular folk events (like the Sandy Bell's Sunday afternoon session I've been going to for many years, which is never going to be listed as a Festival event if I can help it).

If you play an instrument, bring it.
