Duane D. & I were wondering if there are people in our area--1 hr N of NYC (upper Westchester County)who would be interested in getting together on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday for an informal song circle. I'd be happy to open my fairly normal livingroom & provide tea & cookies! Drop me a note at bdcarr@bestweb.net & we'll see if we can get something going!

Hi!

There will a sea music sing at The Seamen's Church Institute, 241 Water Street, Manhattan (next to South Street Seaport tomorrow (SAT, 23JAN) night. This is a monthly event. See
http://www.eclipse.net/~gwb/Chantey_Sings/chantey_sings.html
for the remaining dates this year.

Additionally, I copy this from "The Irish Folk Song Course" thread which is current. The first class of the Irish Folk Song Course at The Irish Arts Center in Manhattan (New York City) is tomorrow night, 21JAN @ 6PM. The telephone number to register is 212-757-3318.

"A few Mudcatters have expressed an interest in participating in a Singers' Circle. I should tell you that the class is followed by an open-to-all Singers' Circle starting at 7PM; there are 28 enrolled in the class, so there will be plenty of good company. Anyone who lives near NYC or who may be in NYC on a Thursday night for business or pleasure between 21JAN and 11MAR is invited to stop by The Irish Arts Center to join us in song. The Center is located at 553 West 51st Street."

I hope to see you.

All the best, Dan Milner

Hi,

Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but do check with your local Irish pubs for any weekend sessions.

Singers provide the flute and fiddle players with a much-appreciated break to go smoke a couple of cigarettes.

The Irish Echo or Irish Voice should have a list of sessions. A lot of the ones I used to attend (before our baby arrived) have dried up in the Bronx area. I've heard there's a swinging scene in Queens these days.

A Singers' Circle is a bit different phenonemon than a Session. The idea is that, rather than tapping their feet politely for 30 minutes non-stop during an outpouring of jigs and reels, the singers get to sing at a Singers's Circle. They came about because many sessions have become as Rich describes above.

I'd be interested -- I live in Manhattan (in a studio apartment, so I obviously won't be hosting).

The Irish Folk Song Course sounds interesting.

Update from bbc--

Haven't gotten much response. Those of you who are interested, it sounds like once a month on a Saturday might work. If people want to try a 2nd or 4th Saturday of the month, please email me at bdcarr@bestweb.net & specify 1)either the 2nd or the 4th as 1st choice 2) whether you'd come the other night & 3) a way to contact you (Mudcat private message or email address would be nice). We are located in Yorktown Heights, NY, which is the upper tip of Westchester County, just off the Taconic Parkway. What we are interested in is a casual, friendly group who will take turns playing & listening to music. If it sounds like fun to you, please get in touch! Who knows, maybe we'll just start w/ a couple of people & see where it goes. Dan--no offence intended, but we don't go into NYC much. Thanks for the info, anyway.

regards,

bbc
