Here's a good article from the Picayune (Mississippi) about a new, liberal voice in country music, Tony Stampler, and his recording of the song "I'm Taking My Country Back," composed by David Kent at the request of Paul Sholten.

Historically patriotic country music produces song criticizing Bush

Excerpt: "Saturday, October 23, 2004 8:15 PM CDT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Some Nashville musicians have recorded a song critical of President Bush called "Takin' My Country Back" that chides him for the war in Iraq, the budget deficit, the economy and other issues.

The tune is getting a lot of attention through radio ads, the media and the Internet. It was even played during an Oct. 9 Nashville appearance by filmmaker Michael Moore with the lyrics broadcast over the arena's JumboTron.
...
"Takin' My Country Back" is the brainchild of Paul Scholten, a musician whose son served in Iraq. He asked a friend, David Kent, who wrote Blake Shelton's hit "Austin," to compose it.

All of the musicians on the record played for free, and the studio time was donated.

Scholten said some big-name singers who are Democrats were approached with the song, but they declined. Session singer Tony Stampley, son of 1970s country star Joe Stampley, ended up handling the vocals.
...
There's a lot more to the article.

---------------

I couldn't find this in the forum or DT, so here are the lyrics:

I'M TAKING MY COUNTRY BACK
David Kent, ca. 2004
Sung by Tony Stampley

Country music's got mamas and daddies.
We got bar rooms and old heartbreak songs,
But I'm here today to stand up and say
How I feel about my home sweet home,
What's left, what's right and what's wrong,

And so I'm takin' my country back.
Son, you ain't been doin' her right.
Oh, I been watchin' you and I don't like
How you been treatin' my Stars and Stripes.
You took our jobs and sent 'em overseas.
Now we owe billions to the red Chinese.
You blew the budget and you botched Iraq,
So I'm takin' my country back

We had a bundle in the treasury drawer,
More than there had ever been before,
But every day we're drownin' deeper in debt.
Maybe four years should be all you get.
Then you gave tax breaks to the millionaires
And you tried to make the workin' man pay,
But you can't tax a man when his job's not there.
Now look at where we are today.

Hey, I'm takin' my country back.
Son, you ain't been doin' her right.
Oh, I been watchin' you and I don't like
How you been treatin' my Stars and Stripes.
You got too many fancy friends for me.
The Saudis treat you like you're royalty.
You blew the budget and you botched Iraq.
Now I'm takin' my country back.

Now, I can understand why you were hot,
'Cause Bin Laden never did get caught.
So you said we had Saddam to blame,
Tried to tell us it was all the same.

But now the years roll by and our kids keep dyin'.
You don't even have a plan to bring 'em home,
And those WMDs you promised on TV,
Hey, admit it, you figured it wrong,
So I'm takin' my country back.

Now, you don't know my name, but you know who I am.
I'm your everyday work hard, play hard,
Raise kids and pray hard common man.
And, lord knows, I love this land!

That's why I'm takin' my country back.
Son, you ain't been doin' her right.
Oh, I been watchin' you and I don't like
How you've been treatin' my Stars and Stripes.
You say, "Unite," but you divide us more,
Cussing' each other on the Senate floor.
Ain't we supposed to be above all that?
Hey, I'm takin' my country back!

I got my family and my church and flag,
Now I'm takin' my country back.

---
Several of the websites I found via Lycos.com which discuss this song give links that are supposed to take you to David Kent's or Tony Stampley's websites or others where you can legally download an mp3 of this song, free, but none of them so far seem to work. Either nothing happens or I'm taken to an unrelated website. Dare I suspect cyber-sabotage?

I mean, I'm shocked! Shocked, I tell you!

Thanks for adding the line breaks, folks. Seems to be some incompatibility between the Text Edit program at Mac's OSX and the mudcat.org software. (I should've done a Preview, I guess!)

BTW, the copyright date is definitely 2004, and Tony Stampley is the guy who recorded it.

I just wish I could access the free download sites. It seems Paul Sholten, David Kent, and Tony Stampley are eager to share the song, but somehow it's nearly impossible to follow the posted links to the download sites without getting siderailed.

Seems there are forces afoot that don't want this song to have an audience.

Now all we need is an anti-Bush NASCAR car... And some new beeer company that ain't Busch an' this sad chapter in American history will be over....

Looking forward to hearing this song....

Hey, stranger stuff has happened... maybe, just maybe, the chinck in the armor might come from the country singers... If that happenns then, sho nuff, we're going to take the country back 'cause they are the conduit to the Southern Strategy that has kept right wingers in power for most of the last 30 some years....

That's interesting, McGrath, I've been "googling' that song title -- alternatively searching for David Kent, etc. -- for a long time today, albeit using lycos.com, and I've found many different links to sites with the lyrics and/or blogs or articles about the song and the Honky Tonker Liberals (or whatever they're called), but every time one of those sites gives a link that's supposed to take the reader to the mp3, it's a link to www.takinmycountryback.com -- which is that defense attorney's site.

It's really frustrating.

LOL, McGrath!   I see you got the link from Randi Rhodes ( www.airamericaradio.com or www.therandirhodesshow.com )!   I was about to try her site or Ed Schultz's or Thom Hartmann's, because that's where I've heard the song (or clips of it) before.

Hey, Bobert, remember "Billy Beer?" ;-D

I'm down with that grassroots-connected, down home, liberal NASCAR model, too!

Well, heck yeah, Genie.... I still have a six pack of it in by "private collection".... But whenI see a peace sign on the hood of a NASCAR car, I know that Bush and his buddies have outlived their usefullness to Southern Man....

That would make my day....

Hey, anywhere I can hear a clip of the song??? Heck, if it ain't half bad I might even start sticking it into some of my performances....

Bobertized, of course...

I just heard the record producer, Bob Titley (sp?) interviewed on Thom Hartmann's local talk radio show on 620 AM, KPOJ in Portland, OR. He said David Kent wrote the song "I'm Taking My Country Back."

It seems a lot of people (can't imagine which side of the political spectrum they come from) are hell-bent on keeping the public from hearing Tony singing "I'm Takin' My Country Back."   Websites set up for the song, e.g., www.takinmycountryback, have been sabotaged in various and sundry ways, and if you google the song or Tony Stampley or even Honky Tonkers For Truth, you get led to a lot of sites that are defunct or in one way or another been hijacked.

But I did find this site where you can currently download an mp3 of the song:
benfrank.net

You can also hear a clip of Tony singing this song, along with clips from Merle's "Okie From Muskogee" (which was written as a gag, after Merle & his boys saw a sign in Muskogee) and other songs to illustrate the political shift in country music over the decades, here:

It can be hard to find this song on the web, as it seems too many who feel their toes are being stepped on by this song keep sabotaging the various websites and links that would let the song be heard by a wider audience. But I found a good audio of the song, accompanying an anti-Mitch McConnell campaign video, HERE.

Thanks, bankley.

The Justice Through Music Project website, for some reason, has the song listed as "David Kent." (Is that, or is "Tony Stampley," a pseudonym?) Anyway, it's Stampley's voice singing the song:

May I say that I've had my share of "misdirects" on the web, but I do not believe that the herd is weasels in the White House are responsible.

I like this song in a lot of ways, but not the isolationism it projects. OK, take your country back; play 'King of the Hill' with the world. Just don't be surprised if every now and then something like the Alamo, Pearl Harbor or 9/11 comes back around and bites you on the ass.

Now remind me, what are Junior's standings again?

Just saying I don't see the "King Of The Hill" thing in the lyrics to this song. I see it as a protest to our economy and security and constitution being ruined for the sake of Dubya's big-international-corporate interests.
