Subject: Old Time in the UK - Feb/March From: nickp Date: 12 Jan 06 - 02:59 PM A veritable blitz of Old Time music is about to hit the UK - well to be honest, England and Wales (sorry Scotland & Ireland). There's the annual Gainsborough Old Time Music and Dance Festival and tours by Beverly Smith & Carl Jones and the Gathering (Tom Sauber, Brad Leftwich and Alice Gerrard plus Debby McClatchy) The Gainsborough Festival Dates are 17th to 19th February at the usual venue - Castle Hill School, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Star guests are The Rockinghams - Rafe Stefanini, Beverly Smith, Meredith McIntosh and John Herrmann. Beverly will also be joined by Carl Jones in their duo role. From Eire we have old friends the Rough Deal String Band and from closer to home, The Slowdown Boys, Buffalo Gals and Highly Strung. Clogging/flatfoot instruction by Pam Russell, Sue Coe, Sibs Riesen and Paul Sheridan plus the opportunity for square dancing and possibly a little contra dance. Subject: RE: Old Time in the UK - Feb/March From: BanjoRay Date: 13 Jan 06 - 07:35 PM Well - this looks like a superb lineup, and Keith's arranged some really good workshops. I'm also looking forward to the 2 hour square dance on friday night after the concert - Beverly Smith's a superb old time dance caller, and the Rockinghams do an amazing job with the old classic fiddle tunes. Of course the Buffalo Gals'll be helping out at the dance with Kate Lissauer calling (and fiddling, of course). I see Mike Harding mentioned the festival on his program - I wonder if he's coming? He is a member of Foaotmad after all. More later ..... Ray |

Subject: RE: Old Time in the UK - Feb/March From: BanjoRay Date: 15 Jan 06 - 07:14 PM The festival is marked on the Folk Map. Clicking on say Scunthorpe would get you near enough to see the festival symbol, and zooming in will show you exactly where it is. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Old Time in the UK - Feb/March From: BanjoRay Date: 16 Jan 06 - 10:14 AM I didn't press anything, honest - that blank message came from some fanatical anonymous bluegrasser. Sorry anyway. Now where was I .... Oh yes, The Gathering tour with Tom, Brad and Alice and Debby McClatchy. I'll be driving for the gang on their England tour next month, and am really looking forward to it. Debby's coming over earlier than the others, because she wants to come to the Gainsborough Festival as a customer and join in all the jamming and general craic. The excellent monthly Old Time session in Sheffield has moved back to the Royal in Cundy Street, Walkley, due to the closure (temporary I hope, for Sheffield music) of the Red House. The session's the third monday of the month, ie tonight, from around 8.pm, led by Dave Young the fiddling superstar. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Old Time in the UK - Feb/March From: Sooz Date: 31 Jan 06 - 12:15 PM Now then Ray - are you casting nastursiums on our cuisine in this neck of the woods? Our Rob can do more than deep fry you know! Nick you can tie your mule to a tree as usual. Don't use the goal posts as a hitchin' rail - they aren't up to it. |
Subject: RE: Old Time in the UK - Feb/March From: BanjoRay Date: 31 Jan 06 - 07:25 PM Well, Sooz - you are of course correct. Rob normally cooks hay in a wok when the microwave's broken, so the mules'll be mighty pleased. The folks on the other hand will be also delighted - Rob and Brenda make superb FOOD as well. Cheers Ray |
