Hi Folks. Yes it's been quite a while since I posted anything here but I had to do this. Jeeze I'm excited to bursting about the fact that I've finally finished my own solo CD and the release party is happening at Hugh's Room in Toronto on Jan. 29th. I know most of you won't be able to attend but I know you'll be there in spirit.

Details and samples at http://www.paulmills.ca

Cheers,

Paul

I read about this bloke, who was obviously a friend of Rick Fielding and we all know that he produced a CD for Jed Marum. I listened to a few sound samples and it is obvious that he is a a very fine picker, singer and writer himself. I could hear bits of Big Bill Broonzy at times and the cheerful song about the car boot sale reminded me of the best of Jerry Rasmussen's songs. I am sure I am not the only Mudcatter, who would enjoy the gig.

Paul has always played really good backup for so many artists and his fingerpicking and guitar playing is a treat to hear every time I hear it. You can really sense his feel and taste ( and great ability) in his playing be it traditional, or contemporary - and his obvious joy in doing so shows in the music. It's great that Paul is going upfront now for all to enjoy . I'm looking forward to getting that CD.

Do I get to brag and say that I got to sing on one of the choruses on one of the songs on this CD? Paul of course was wise enough to put me into a group and blur me into the crowd. :-)

Can't wait for the release, Paul. I asked Anthony at Hugh's Room for the best seats available, but Bev already took those ones, for a table of 117.

"My paddle's keen and" ... oh, no, wrong words silly... no wonder he blurred me out.

Congratulatons to Paul on the release of this album. I wish I could make the Jan 29 release party.

I heard much of this CD "in progress" during my work with Paul last year and I feel privileged to have done so! I am looking forward to having my own copy soon.

While I haven't heard the fininshed product, I know from the work I've heard already that the album has a rich variety - depth, surprises in texture, styles and humor. I loved it. Paul has carefully chosen some strong and beautiful songs. Songs and recordings that will resonate with you - and an album you'll want to hear over and over - an album you'll want to sit listen to time and again.

There's that moment reached in one of Paul's backyard "celebrations of life" singing parties ... those small intimate gatherings of music friends around a table and a glass ... that moment where just enough fine fellowship on guitar and song is reached ... that moment in the cool Toronto summer evening air when the whiskey and vermouth, and the magic inspiration of the moon all conspire to deliver the best damned version of "Scotch and Soda" you'll ever experience! The magic of that moment is captured in this package ... you won't hear that song on Paul's new album - but you'll feel the same magic of those backyard "Scotch and Soda" moments.

Over the last few decades, Paul has been "behind the glass" engineering and producing for many of the very finest folk music recordings. Now the master speaks from "The Other Side of the Glass."

This will be a great album and it will be a fine addition to the North American folk music tradition.

That CD I sent around to a few people was co-produced way back by Paul and Bill Garrett. Paul played on many of the cuts, and he wrote the string arrangement for "Fool Like Me" in about forety-five minutes at his kitchen table while his wife--another good singer--was pounding me into the dirt playing backgammon at a penny a point. Paul is a remarkable person, and in that package is a great guitarist, fine singer, caring individual and damn good writer.

I listened to the sound clips and you've got better with age. And you don't look a day over 80 on the cover. I hope this CD is chosen for some honours come awards time. It deserves them, Paul, and so do you.

Wow...

Thanks to all of you for your kind words of encouragement and support. It's especially gratifying to hear such positive feedback from those of you who have heard bits of the project or sampled some of the clips on my new website.

Everyone who has made an album (CD, whatever) has gone through that terrifying period of uncertainty about whether the damn thing is good enough or even worthy of being "out there". I've helped many artists through those uncertainties and now it's my turn! My son, Trevor has been an enormous help in calming me down and I thank him for that. And I have to say, so was our dear friend, Rick Fielding. He was nurturing to me just as he was to so many of you. Sorry he's not here to hear the final product.

Eventually, you just have to take the plunge, say, "OK, it's done"! and put it out there! Well, here it is and I hope you enjoy it.

By the way, I will be on Heather's show on CIUT tomorrow night plugging the CD and playing some tunes live. Hope you can tune in!

Thanks again, everyone.

Cheers,

Paul Mills

Hi Folks,

As one of those artists Paul helped through those uncertainties I have to say I'm thrilled he's completed this CD. One of the great pleasures of working with Paul was the after hours when we'd share tunes. He has some real gems. This is long overdue. I can't wait to hear it!

I think Rick's nurturing was aimed at challenging people to believe they could do something. He may not be here to see that you got to your destination, but he walked with you for a while on the road and I'm sure that's all he needed to be proud of you.

I'll be listening to the show tonight, Paul. Good luck with the recording and the release, and I'll raise a toast to you, in whiskey and vermouth...the hell I will! Jed, jeez. Don't let non-drinkers near the bar.

Wine works: To Paul and The Other Side of the Glass, the best of everything - ya done good!

Paul - great great job on 45 years. It's lovely song and I've heard many fine versions from a handful of singers over the years - but you have really captured the beauty and simplicity of the song. The simple sounding flow of guitars accompanying the piece support and compliment the beauty of the melody - the complex layers of the track's production are completely transparent. Your unaffected vocal delivers the lyrics beautifully and believably. It may be my favorite track on the album.

Nice chattnig briefly with you and heather on-air. Give my love to Bev ... and I guess I'll not challenge her to backgammon on my next visit!

Hi Y'all...

Just back from doing Heather's show. It was a lot of fun. Coulda knocked me over with a feather when Jed came on the line! Thanks for phoning in Jed and thanks for your very supportive comments.

Jeri, the album will be available on line at the Borealis website but probably not for another week. They're expecting shipment this week. I'll ask the folks in the office to get it up in there online store this week if possible. If any of you can't find it there in the next week and want get a copy, please email me at paul@paulmills.ca and I'll make sure you get one. Just ask for a copy, I'll mail you a CD and an invoice (for $20 Canadian), you mail me a cheque...the honour system works for me in this community. We're cutting close to the line re the launch at Hugh's Room but hey, that's folk music!

I have to say, it's been very special hearing from fellow musicians I've worked with as a producer over the years who have piped in on this thread: Jed Marum, Dan McKinnon, Bruce Murdoch, Jim Hanlon. Having their support in this current role reversal of mine is important to me...thank you all!

Cheers,

Paul Mills

The Canadian $ is up, the US $ down, and at this very moment, 20.00 CAD = 17.2016 USD. Here's a Universal Currency Converter. I believe you can fill the check and write "Canadian funds" down at the bottom.

Having your stuff on an MP3 site would probably be good. I've ordered from Borealis (Rick's 'Acoustic Workshop') and I'd recommend them. They mailed it promptly and were very good about answering me when I asked where it was. The answer was "In the post." Prompt mailing does not ensure postal employees on either side of the border know how anxious you are to get something. In my case, I think I was the last of Rick's friends to get the CD. They're good folks and they have other CDs you might want to pick up when you order Paul's.

It was Bev and Paul--mostly Paul--who taught me how to make and drink Manhattans. The first seven didn't taste all that good, but after that they went down jus' fine. I am sure that what causes the terrible headache a guy can get from them is that there is NO olive, just a maraschino cherry. It's the cherry wot causes the headache, IMO. I never get headaches when I eat olives.

I'm getting excited as the 29th draws nearer!

Check to see if you have those little tiny pull tabs on your wrappers. They make life waaaaay easier. I have them on mine. Which is why I still have fingernails and half a brain (only half, though).

And check out the mini-keychainversion Sharpie pens for signing autographs at Staples/Business Depot. Always be ready!! Your fans may lurk in crowded subway stations and at Egl/DonMills red lights.

From: Big Mick

Soft summer night. Toronto. Friends. Heather's garden. Music and song. Magic. I remember just enjoying the different styles, and the conversation on everything from soup to nuts. I remember feeling Rick's presence in the gathering of people that all loved him and were touched by him. I remember marvelling at the instrumental talent gathered in that very special place, and wishing I could play like that. Until that night, in that place I love so well, I had thought of myself as a singer who played alright. I always thought of Paul as an instrumental virtuoso who would sing the occasional song. Then I heard him sing 45 Years for us. I remember being drawn into his interpretation of this, and knowing that he had captured it exactly as the lyrics should be sung. Sometimes a song developes a life of its own. Especially the popular ones. Songs like this get done by many folks because they are wonderful expressions. Because they are done by many, sometimes they get trivialized or marginalized. Then along comes a performer who knocks the road dust off of it, discovers the essenence that made it great to begin with, and delivers the quintessential performance. I remember that night telling Paul that his was the best I had ever heard. I meant that. He strips off all the phoniness and makes you feel the emotion. Knowing him and Bev as I do, I knew that he was singing for her. I knew that her smiling face is exactly what caused him to capture it so perfectly. And I knew that, once again, he had affected my own performing style in a profound way. Here was this gifted instrumentalist, maybe one of the best I have ever met, and he delivered this song simply and elegantly and touched me deeply. I learned a huge lesson about delivering a lyric that night. For this man's delivery of this song alone, I would shell out the money. And I know that this song is but the tip of the iceberg.

I have just listened to the sound clips, and I cannot wait to get my hands on this CD. I know this man well enough to tell you that the instrumentals will be phenomenal, the arrangements will be astounding, and the production values first rate. You will not want to miss this one.

Paul, I would love to be with you on the 29th. In fact I tried to arrange the sched so I could. It appears that isn't going to work out, but I will be with you in spirit.

I have been on the road and out of touch for quite a bit, but I wanted to pop in and offer my congratulations to my fellow Beef Brother, and wish him every success on this CD. I missed Heather's show, much to my disapointment.

Get this one, friends. I promise you will not be sorry you did.

All the best,

Mick

I know you are with me in spirit on the 29th...only wish you were there in body.

Paul

Many of you know Paul. (I know you do because I've met you through him.) And one way or another, you probably all know his work. If you've heard a Stan Rogers album, you've heard Paul. He's probably best known for his award-winning turns as a producer, but over the years he's also built up a huge reputation as an accompanist, under the sobriquet Curly Boy Stubbs. Now, at long last, he's stepping into the full glare of the spotlight and releasing his own, first-ever CD, comprised of many original pieces and some choice covers. The release party is at Hugh's Room in Toronto's west end this coming Sunday night, January 29th. Curtain is 8:30 pm. I'll be there with bells on and I'd love to see some of you there as well. Hope you can make it.   Joanne

Balladeer is being somewhat humble in her previous posting. Her CD "All the Good Times" was produced by Paul Mills and she is often accompanied by him in concert. Ring those bells, girlfriend!

Lovely article in the Toronto Star this morning about the father-son connection - including reference to the imfamous velvet whip:

PAUL and TREVOR MILLS make a CD

Outed by Black Walnut :). In fact Paul and I have a concert coming up at The Kitchen, a charming venue in Toronto's east end, on Feb. 18. Mudcatters in the neighbourhood are welcome, of course. Just pm me and I'll reserve you a seat. Soon after that evening, we'll be starting on our second album collaboration.

Only two days left to reserve for dinner and Paul at Hugh's Room on Sunday night. It may be sold out, but it's worth a shot.

At Hugh's Room you don't HAVE to reserve for dinner...there are a few seats where you can just have a drink/dessert if you want. And there's always the standing room only option. Just soz you knows.

Listened to the CD today, Paul - thank you so much. Gorgeous inside and out ... can't wait to hear it / see it in real life!

Hot off the presses -- (I live a couple of blocks from Hugh's Room) -- Paul gave a terrific show tonight, the place was totally packed out, he got a standing O, and when last he was seen, the CDs were flying out the door. What a great evening.

Peter T.

Hi Everyone!

Finally able to log onto the cat for a first-person report on last night. It was a magical evening. I couldn't have asked for more: a packed house full of friends, fans and well-wishers, a fantastic band and great response to the CD. It was truly one of the highlights of my life!

I was especially pleased to have my son, Trevor there playing bass and mandolin. Trevor co-produced the CD with me and was central in getting the "true me" down on the recording. For that I thank him. He also thrilled me by turning in a stellar performance on the upright acoustic bass, an instrument he's only been playing for a month! Any bass players out there will tell you that migrating from electric to upright bass is not easy. Trev was great.

Also in the band were Al Cross on drums, David Woodhead on keyboards, mandolin, slide guitar and uke and Don Reed on fiddle. My old pickin' buddy Bill Garrett also sat in on guitar and uke. Yes, uke! There's a cut on the CD called "The Ukulele March" - very silly!

It was a wonderful experience which I'll remember all my life. I'm bleary-eyed, exhausted and thrilled to bits! Thanks to all the catters who showed up! To the rest of you, thanks for the support and I hope I'll see you down the road sometime soon!

Cheers,

Paul Mills

Now that's devotion to the Mudcat, Paul....straight from Hugh's Room to the computer screen. What a guy!

Excellent night. Loved those ukeleles! Blues is like shoes was celestial. Too many people I knew there!!! And you made the waiting staff laugh, too. Trevor, nice to have dinner with you, finally. Bev, sorry you were surrounded - I waved from afar.

Keep up the gigging, Paul. I'm sending your CD off to a friend in Germany. Maybe you can meet her on your first European tour. :-)

Yes, I think it was "Blues Is Like Shoes" that was the peak, though the fake Russian song had us all going.

Good thing a bomb didn't hit the room, Toronto would be listening to practically nothing but canned music for the next twenty years. (Hey, wait a minute, they are already listening to practically nothing but canned music! What is wrong with this picture??)

Peter T.

I sat in my living room in New Jersey last night just wishing I was in Toronto. I am green with envy. How about a full report on the night, folks?

Paul, I hope you got my message. I was thinking about you all night, sitting there with a guitar in my lap and singing songs.

Congrats, buddy. See you this summer.

All the best,

Mick

Hey Mick....I got your message. Thanks so much for the good wishes. I'm still somewhere in the stratosphere!

I talked to the Borealis folks today about not being in their on-line "store" yet and they apologized profusely and promised to have me there in the next day or two.

Cheers,

Paul Mills

Paul, I'm glad the evening was such a success, but I had no doubt it would be. I'll keep checking the Borealis site for the CD. I hope you find much joy riding this wave of fame and fortune.

I will be ordering several on Friday, my friend. I am going to want to give them as gifts to some folks. I would order them today, but I lost my wallet (no shit, really happened) and I am waiting for the replacement cards. The minute they are here, my order is on the way.

Folks, there are any number of reasons to order this one, but the most compelling one is because you love music done with love. I just don't know anyone that just sinks into it like Paul. It is what makes him one of the best producers in the business. I have watched him "behind the glass", and I have watched him with other musicians. This one should excite you.

Congratulations, my friend. See you soon.

Mick

Hi everyone. Sorry to be slow about chiming in here. I'm having trouble getting into the Mudcat after 11pm. Paul was his usual warm and direct self up there. The voice was warm and direct too. He brought us to the edge of tears more than once. (And the cd is just like that also.) It goes without saying that the picking was fantabulous - and then there's that sly wit that peeks through every now and then. My personal highlights were With a Twist, an original Paul song that shows he could have been a lounge lizard in another life, or at least a pretty good blues singer, and Safe In The Harbour. Paul chose this beautiful Eric Bogle song as his second encore. As I watched him all alone on stage,
singing his heart out about the passing of his dear friend Stan Rogers, I succumbed to the tears at last.

Warm and direct. Yes! Elaine Overholt (Paul's vocal coach) would be glad to hear that. She was sitting in the audience...at the same table as Sharon and Lois.

I'm sorry I missed Elaine. (She was my vocal coach on album one.)
I guess I was so focused on the stage I didn't see her.

Hi, Paul.

1) The CD is great. You sound even better than I remember you sounding, and you sounded great back then.

2) I wish to ensure that you still have only five digits on each hand--because it sounds like you have taken advantage of advances in stem-cell research and maybe you now have seven or eight per hand.

3) Your writing is excellent.

4) The treatment of Stan's song is beautiful. He would have loved it lots.

Please pass my compliments to Trevor, and certainly the musicians who worked on it all with you. Ya done a helluva lot better than good. Ya done great. The one complaint I have (and it's a biggie): The CD ends too soon. I hope it's Part A, and that B thru Z are to follow.

Hey Peace....

Thought I'd check into this thread after a few days off and what a delight to find your post! Coming from you, these are huge compliments...particularly the songwriting one! Thank you!!

With regard to the number of fingers on each hand I can only report the same number at greatly reduced mobility...aging is a bitch! But I do my best with what I have at my disposal.

I'll pass on you compliments to Trevor and the other musicians. These guys are great and really supported my music beautifully.

Thanks, buddy...

Paul
