Subject: RE: Folklore: Michael Smith in Toledo Oregon From: Auggie Date: 16 Jan 06 - 10:25 AM Michael Smith. My all time favorite singer/songwriter. You should be able to find his upcoming performance dates at Music-cal:Michael Smith Tour Dates I mean, the guy wrote "The Dutchman", and it's not even his best song. If you like old, heavy-set balding guys with eyes that pierce your soul who show up with no back-up band and one beat-up Martin to sing only their own stuff which is constructed of lyrics to die for and chords that take hours if not days or weeks or longer to figure out at home after you buy and fall in love with the CD, then this is definately going to be worth the drive. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Michael Smith in Toledo Oregon From: GUEST Date: 16 Jan 06 - 11:55 AM I used to see Michael Smith back in the day at the Flick Coffeehouse in Miami; he was amazing. Extremely funny, but his lyrics could bring tears to your eyes too. His guitar skills are to die for. |

Subject: RE: Michael Smith in Toledo Oregon - 20 Jan 06 From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 18 Jan 06 - 10:34 AM Frank, That's "Elizabeth Dark". Just a great song---it's about a lady who hung out at the old 'No Exit Coffeehouse' in the north side Rogers Park area of Chicago. As I mentioned in this good forum, I played there for 37 years. And, for me, she was real. Art |

Subject: RE: Michael Smith in Toledo Oregon - 20 Jan 06 From: Francy Date: 22 Jan 06 - 10:19 PM It was an exceptional concert.....Michael is a master on stage.......His songs are alive and so very well written.....I've heard him do the Dutchman many times and it's different each time....His Spoon River anthology songs were marvelous....80 per cent of the audience had never heard of Michael and trusted our judgement and they weren't disappointed......We've had over 75 concerts here in Toledo, Oregon over a 10 year period and this was one of the best.....Frank Of Toledo....Michael Smith doesn't leave Chicago very often, so if you ever get a chance to hear him ...Do it........Frank of Toledo |

Subject: RE: Michael Smith in Toledo Oregon - 20 Jan 06 From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 23 Jan 06 - 12:00 PM About 5 years ago MS was scheduled to do a gig in a small town in Sourheast Missouri. He was in Arkansas and was on his way back to Chicago. It was cold, damp, and stormy and he was late. I and another friend had our guitars with us and we started playing and singing for the few who had gathered there that night. We had just about given up and were thinking of going home when the door opened. A wet, tired, and bedraggled Michael Smith walked in carying his guitar right in the middle of one of my songs---I was the only one playing; the other guy had put his guitar back in the case preparing to go home. Mike went back into a room to tune up and I did one more song. I then had the privilege of introducing him. He put on one heck of a concert! Ever since then I make the tongue-in-cheek claim that I opened for Michael Smith. |
