Subject: Old Songs 2006
From: GUEST, Allan C.

I just received a note from Old Songs with a link to their listing of this year's performeres. I see a good many old friends on the list. Take a look here. Carmen and I are hoping to attend; but we are juggling a number of things at present, so it is difficult to say much about future events - (other than the Getaway, of course!)

Personally, I'm really excited to see so many singers of the old songs in this year's lineup: Margaret MacArthur, John Roberts, Jeff Warner, Brian Peters, Joe Hickerson, Enoch Kent, George Ward, Finest Kind, Deb McClatchy and more - wahooo!!!

Stecher & Brislin, Jane Voss, wow! Our band was asked to perform over that weekend at a private party, and now I'm in deep moosepoop because I'd rather blow off the gig and go to Old Songs, and apparently I'm the only one who feels this way...

This is a festival I never miss. Old Songs is the best in tradional music, and this year's line-up is great! Don't miss Matapat.
Peggy Seeger is a quiet Queen. Beppe Gambetta is amazing on guitar,
and Kim and Reggie Harris are two of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. I'm intrigued by the Shetland fiddlers. There's always at least
one act I've never heard of before who blows my socks off.
And for dance lovers, the Greenfield Dance Band is terrific.

This line-up makes the first of February a little warmer.

We've gone for many years even when there was no one on the bill that we got excited about. With Stecher and Brislin, Finestkind, Beppe, I would call it a foregone conclusion. As I said to Kendall, if the devil doesn't git me before then.

Peter.

This is really an incredible lineup. Beppe is fantastic. And Rashad Eggleston (The Wild Band of Snee) will be worth hearing, I'm sure. He's a cellist who graduated from Berklee and plays everything from classical to kickin' bluegrass on that thing! I ran into him once at a festival at 3:00 am where he and just a banjo player were playing the hell out of a string of fiddle tunes.

I'd just like to say that, although I registered last year late enough so I wasn't sure I'd get in AND I got what was possibly the very last camping spot (which was crap, but I'm thankful they found SOME spot for me, and it was my fault anyway), as of last Monday, my registration is in.

Animaterra, you know you're on the Songs Festival 'Schedule of Events' page, dontcha?

Got mine, Jeri! Although, this year, my hosts have opted to camp at a nearby state park, rather than on the Old Songs site. Keeps the non-folkies happy that way.

Jeri, are you bringing your fiddle?

Won't be long, now!

I'm bringing the fiddle and the guitar. I haven't been playing either much, so I should practice and try to re-learn some of the stuff I used to know. I've felt so crappy the last 2 years, I figure this year, I'm gonna have one hell of a good time. Plus, I'm overdue for winning the Taylor in the raffle.

We got tickets. Way down in the bottom field near the woods. Kendall & Jacqui said they'd have their big rig down in the woods where they stick the big rigs, so we arranged to make it convenient to sponge off them. Jacqui does good cookout. I just have to bring some champagne and some Jameson's...

Time to start planning now for MizC's & my 40th anniversary party next year.

My freind Pam has out tickets, so I'm not sure where the camp site is but we decided to go for noisy at night this year. I'll be bringing the fiddle so perhaps I can catch up with the other fiddlers. Didn't see as much of Mudcatters last year I was in a strange spot emotionally and just danced, wanderd around and played and tried to decide on some major life stuff. This year I just aim to sing, play and catch up with the folks I missed last year. Life is much better, especially with all of that music to look forward to.

We usually camp in the "inner circle" near the drag pit/horse shoe toss.
I hope to catch up with folks I've been meeting... as well as
all the folks I see each year - mud catters or not.

I certainly hope the weather improves before June 23. It's in the fifties, windyy and wet now, and even the cat won't go out. Yuck! Well tomorrow I head for Northeast Heritage Music Camp, and get a sneak preview of Alan Jabbour, Ken Perlman and David Kaynor. It doesn't really matter if the weather's awful up there, since we are staying in those lovely Johnson State College Dorms (a little sarcasm there) so I'll head for Old Songs high from music camp. Andy Spence will be my guest on WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS this Sunday to talk about the festival, and I will be playing music from many of the artists who are scheduled to appear.    Andy will join me during the 5pm ET hour. You can listen in through our website at www.wfdu.fm .

In addition, my program will also feature a look back at the 1963 Arkansas Folk Festival. Our "tour guide" will be Dr. Brooks Blevins who produced a two-CD set from tapes of this historic festival. The sound quality is superb, and the music returns us to an age when a festival represented the music that was being in the region. Jimmy Driftwood, Almeda Riddle, Ollie Gilbert and others perform alongside superb local musicians who showcased music that was part of their lives. This portion of the show will be heard from 3 to 5pm ET.

I think Old Songs is one of the few remaining festivals that keeps true to the spirit of traditional music and creates a brilliant atmosphere. I am looking forward to next weekend to get my folk-batteries re-charged.
