Subject: "Suzanne" singers
From: D.Martin

Ive been trying to find out who sang the song "Suzanne" that was written by Leonard Cohen. The data base lists Judy Collins and Harry Belafonte. I think Harry"s is a different song, but no matter. I believe it was also recorded by another male singer but I dont know who. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Noel Harrison, I believe, made a popular recording of SUZANNE

BELAFONTE's SUZANNE (recorded in mid1950s on BELAFONTE) is really "Every Night When the Sun Goes In [Down]."

The Belafonte "Suzanne" is a completely different song:
Every night when the sun goes down,
...Hang my head in mournful cry.
Suzanne...Suzanne...Suzanne...you're gone.
It's on his second album, Belafonte, and also on his Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall.
www.cdnow.com shows a number of recordings of songs with the name "Suzanne." I'll bet most of them are the song written by Leonard Cohen, but the Belafonte recording is not.

Chad Mitchell recorded it on "Himself" after leaving the CM Trio

Correction: The Chad Mitchell album is "Love, A Feeling Of"

Belafonte did record "Suzanne". Joe is naturally right that the Suzanne song on "Returns to Carnegie Hall" is a different song. BUT, Belafonte did record the Cohen "Suzanne" on his 1970 album "Homeward Bound". The song was also recorded by Peter Gabriel, Neil Diamond, Spanky and Our Gang.

Thanks, Rich - I thought I remembered Belafonte singing the Cohen "Suzanne," but I was led astray when I found the other song.

Roberta Flack covered Cohen's Suzanne in the early to mid seventies, I believe it was on the same album as "Killing Me Softly". I remember it being pretty successful on AM radio in Toronto. A nice version.

I found a Leonard Cohen site that lists about 480 covers of LC songs including 89 covers of "Suzanne". About a third of the covers have occurred in non-english speaking countries. The site is shown below. If someone (hint) would like to convert it to a link that would be a good thing.
