Subject: "Suzanne" singers From: D.Martin Date: 25 Jan 99 - 09:22 PM Ive been trying to find out who sang the song "Suzanne" that was written by Leonard Cohen. The data base lists Judy Collins and Harry Belafonte. I think Harry"s is a different song, but no matter. I believe it was also recorded by another male singer but I dont know who. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 25 Jan 99 - 09:30 PM Of course, Leonard recorded. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: Date: 26 Jan 99 - 01:28 PM Noel Harrison, I believe, made a popular recording of SUZANNE |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: Date: 26 Jan 99 - 01:39 PM BELAFONTE's SUZANNE (recorded in mid1950s on BELAFONTE) is really "Every Night When the Sun Goes In [Down]." |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jan 99 - 01:40 PM The Belafonte "Suzanne" is a completely different song: Every night when the sun goes down,It's on his second album, Belafonte, and also on his Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall. www.cdnow.com shows a number of recordings of songs with the name "Suzanne." I'll bet most of them are the song written by Leonard Cohen, but the Belafonte recording is not. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: rich r Date: 26 Jan 99 - 09:17 PM Chad Mitchell recorded it on "Himself" after leaving the CM Trio rich r |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: rich r Date: 27 Jan 99 - 01:18 PM Correction: The Chad Mitchell album is "Love, A Feeling Of" Belafonte did record "Suzanne". Joe is naturally right that the Suzanne song on "Returns to Carnegie Hall" is a different song. BUT, Belafonte did record the Cohen "Suzanne" on his 1970 album "Homeward Bound". The song was also recorded by Peter Gabriel, Neil Diamond, Spanky and Our Gang. rich r |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Jan 99 - 02:32 PM Thanks, Rich - I thought I remembered Belafonte singing the Cohen "Suzanne," but I was led astray when I found the other song. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: Steve Latimer Date: 27 Jan 99 - 03:22 PM Roberta Flack covered Cohen's Suzanne in the early to mid seventies, I believe it was on the same album as "Killing Me Softly". I remember it being pretty successful on AM radio in Toronto. A nice version. |
Subject: RE: Suzanne singers From: rich r Date: 27 Jan 99 - 05:53 PM I found a Leonard Cohen site that lists about 480 covers of LC songs including 89 covers of "Suzanne". About a third of the covers have occurred in non-english speaking countries. The site is shown below. If someone (hint) would like to convert it to a link that would be a good thing. http://www.netsonic.fi/~ja/cohen/frame.html
