I'm still a student in high school, but I'm looking into studying Folklore/ Musicology in college. I've already looked at the internet sites of Indiana U, Wisconson, Pennslyvania, and others, but I'd like personal opinions of the schools, environment, difficulty of getting into the shcools, etc!

Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland may be worth considering.

You'll have to differentiate between folklore and folk musicology. While they are related, they are two different fields. If you're primary focus is to be on folklore, then Indiana Unversity is quite good (the created the term and study of "jokelore" there, for example). The University of Pennsylvania is another excellent school for folklore studies.

But if you want to focus on the musical aspect, you'll probably have to go elsewhere.

(I'm assuming you're in the US.)

Hello on a seperate subject, I wonder if any reader knows of a group of Folk muscicians under this name. I recall seeing an LP cover with just this on it, but it may well not be the name of the group but just the album itself. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
P.W.Lane

Guest student.
Try www.craigmorrison.com and I think you may find his site fits your needs. Craig is a great guy and when you check out his site you may find what he teaches is what you are looking for. E-mail him, I'm sure you will get a response. He is located in Montreal Canada.

Sheffield (UK) does joint folklore/ethnomusicology course. And has a large population of overseas students.

The University of Pennsylvania program, which used to be excellent, has been closed to admissions for 2 years now. The university's leadership is cutting smaller programs all across the arts in order to buffer the pocketbooks of the university trustees. At the undergraduate level there is almost nothing left in folklore.

Memorial University of Newfoundland and Indiana have the largest and strongest programs in North America. Both are excellent places for folklore and ethnomusicology. Look at their websites, check out the faculty, and look at the work of their graduates.

In Europe - check out University of Sheffield and University College of Cork.

You can also look into ethnomusicology programmes - but if you want a good balance of folklore and ethnomusicology - Memorial University and Indiana.

I got my master's in folklore from the University of Oregon, and it was wonderful. I got to work with amazing scholars like Dianne Dugaw (author of Women Warriors and Popular Balladry), and Carol Silverman (a highly regarded scholar of Bulgarian Roma/Gypsy music and dance). Plus Eugene has a great folk music scene and is in easy proximity to Portland and Seattle.

Of course Indiana is excellent, with a very big program. UC Berkeley also has a well-regarded program, but is the opposite of Indiana, only accepting one or two students a year. Memorial U. in Newfoundland is also very very good, and has a great new ethnomusicology program as well.

Good luck to you wherever you decide to go!
Rev
