You all know where it is and what it is by now. Folk song/session the Ship Lower Stoke near Rochester Kent. Sat 18th Feb. Where are all you Kent folkies?


Rules:

1. I am fed up with making spare beds so bring your sleeping bags. Beds can be used as bases, if I have too many sleepovers bring your lilos too.

2. There probably will not be chilli stoo. There might be a bit of fishless paella, or there might not. So you might have to go home Sunday lunchtime to eat or eat the SUPERB and HUGE sunday lunches Sally the landlady in the pub does, concessionary prices for folkers who book them IN ADVANCE to give her time to lay in stocks. Not usually served there until about 4 pm!

3. The guest real ale in the pub at the moment is Courage Best 'cos Sally was getting complaints that the Old Speckled Hen was too strong (now what the folk could have made anyone think that?), but it's well served and a nice session beer at a strength that you can drink all night (or for quite a long time anyway) without it producing the effect of a full frontal lobotomy. Anyway, it has been ordered and I think it will be the Courage again.

The band that taste forgot will be there hopefully but as per last month have prior arrangement to invade Essex next day so will not be staying over. Kent locals to whom I have emailed the link, pass it on! We don't see Brian often enough, we've never had Sussed or Dave Rumsey (whose stuff I really really rate), Charlie you said you would some time, etc, etc...

Essex Girl is in Glasgow. Had a visit to a nice folk club in East Kilbride on Monday, and a terrific session last night here in Glasgow. Will be flying back tonight but sadly won't be able to make it on Saturday as I have to pick up son from Stansted airport.

Everyone invited. People in Essex, come over QE bridge, left down A2.
Pass Gravesend and keep left A289 (posted Medway Tunnel).
First roundabout keep left A228 posted (amongst other things) Thamesport.
Follow A228 for 7 miles.
Turn left into Lower Stoke High Street.
At end, look diagonally left and you will see the Ship.

Alternatively, take a big, big run-up and jump like hell across the Thames, or the Tilbury Ferry to Gravesend, steal a car or motorbike (don't worry, everyone does it there), A226 east, A289, A228 and as before.

If you have a microlight aircraft, fly into Middle Stoke airfield.

No, go past Gravesend on the A2, and then keep left onto the A289.

We start about 8-ish or 8.30 and finish when we all fall down.

This is shaping up nicely. Watch it though Richard. Jo Jo seems a bit keen, and not just for the music by the sound of it. Don't worry, if she finds her way to Lower Stoat we'll protect you. {For a small fee.}

Suggestion for J0 JO on travel.
1/ Steal rocket-propelled motorcycle.
2/ Drive it to end of Southend pier.
3/ Build ramp at far end.
4/ Begin run-up from foreshore.
5/ 0-400 as fast as possible allowing for sidewinds and low-flying seagulls. With a good tail-wind you should land in garden of Bridge House.
6/ Beware of the dogs. They LOVE ME BUT BITE EVERYONE ELSE!!!!!!!

There is a snag with that plan to use Southend Pier to shorten the jump, Girl Friday. Although Southend is almost due north of me, the pier points several degrees east of south, so if you successfully make the jump as described, you will land (if about 5 miles later) not in Lower Stoke, or even Allhallows or Grain or Hoo, but in Sheerness, the wrong side of the River Medway. South down Westcliff High Street should point you about right for Allhallows.

Another plan might be a rigid inflatable (boat) with a large outboard motor or 6, dodge the customs boats who keep an eye on the diamond smugglers who run out ot Allhallows, and try to make it into Yantlett Creek.

By the way, isn't Southend pier still in two bits at the moment? Some incident with a ship that cut it in half?

We will be there, been waiting to hear if pat had to do overtime or not this weekend.

However we will be coming via the more conventional mode of road travel as our rocket has gone in for it's MOT and the teleportation unit's got a flat battery. ;-)

i am afraid Richard is almost right, Southend Pier was burned to a cinder recently (Boo Hoo) (and that's NOT HOO in kent !!)

Will try my sinclair 5, but the battery tends not to like Kent much!

Anyway, Sue, EVERYONE knows that at 88 miles per hour, you go through the space/time continu um and arrive in Kent back in 1806 ! (back from the future !!)

Can't come tonight I'm afraid, having had a bad scare yesterday.

I overdid the exercises at cardiac rehab, and had to use my GTN spray because of chest pain. My blood pressure hit the deck causing me to faint, and I wound up in A & E for four hours while they restored it to something like normal.

Result is I'm confined to home till Monday resting.

OK! that's not entirely true I went out with my cousin on Friday night to see a band that didn't turn up. Went back to her place and got rather slaughtered.

It was a good evening. Jojo found us OK but left early by local standards to drive home. The pub adored her material, particularly the "Willy-O" song. Kevin the shirt murderer was also on top form. One punter who had come down from Croydon to visit his daughter liked it so much he is threatening to cmae back all the way from Croydon!

I would have hated the guilt of jeopardising Pat's exams. More power to his elbow.

However, a note for the Guitar freaks, the general consensus seemed to be that Will (of Fiddlefit)'s new Ebay Martin D35 was not all that wonderful to listen to (nice, but not what it should have been). Perhaps a good setup will achieve something.

Glad you all had a good night. I spent 3 hours in a motorway service station near Stansted waiting for a delayed plane. If we hadn't have had a small child with us we could have gone to the pub! (Namely the Jolly Woodman where there's a good session next Saturday.

Greetings from the Middle East (Qatar to be precise). I'm out here to perform at the Dunestock festival (I kid you not!) and to spend some time drinking/singing with some old mates.

Many thanks to Richard and to everyone who was at the last session at the Ship; I really enjoyed it. I shall be back in Britain in time for the next one - probably accompanied by Growler and Short Legs - assuming that it's on the 18th of March (please confirm !).

As for Courage Best, I remember my grandad (a keen Friary Meux drinker) saying on more than one occasion that the reason they used the slogan "Take Courage" was that it took courage to drink it!
