Ah, yes! One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite musicals. It's really a sweet song.
...but it sure was a bear to type.

I REMEMBER IT WELL
(from the Broadway MusicalGigi)
words: Alan Jay Lerner
music: Frederic Lowe
©1957 & 1958 by Chappell & Co., Inc.

We met at nine.
We met at eight.
I was on time.
No, you were late.
Ah, yes! I remember it well.

We dined with friends.
We dined alone.
A tenor sang.
A baritone.
Ah, yes! I remember it well.

That dazzling April moon!
There was none that night.
And the month was June.

That's right! That's right!

It warms my heart
To know that you
Remember still
The way you do.

Ah, yes! I remember it well.

How often I've thought of that Friday—
--Monday
…night.
When we had our last rendezvous.
And somehow I've foolishly wondered if you might
By some chance be thinking of it too.

That carriage ride…
You walked me home.
You lost a glove.
I lost a comb.
Ah, yes! I remember it well.

That brilliant sky.
We had some rain.
Those Russian songs.
From sunny Spain.
Ah, yes! I remember it well.

You wore a crown of gold.
I was all in blue.
Am I getting old?
Oh, no! Not you!
How strong you were,
How young and gay;
A prince of love
In every way.

Ah, yes! I remember it well.

I did make one semi-mistake - the film came first - 1957/58. The Broadway musical came later, 1974. This song in the film is Chevalier at his best. The Broadway cast recording is OK, but not a classic.

Joe - are you sure it's a "crown" of gold ? Might it be "gown"? It would make more sense given the following line.

Mo

Dear Joe, Thanks for the effort -- brought back memories (am I getting old...) -- but you aren't going back far enough. The original, from a story by Colette, was a Broadway play (before it was a musical) in about 1950, that starred a complete unknown named Audrey Hepburn.

Yours, Peter T.

Maurice Chevalier and Sophie Tucker performed this song together (supposedly their only joint appearance) on the Ed Sullivan Show, probably in the fifties. It might be available on one of those "Best of Sullivan"-type videos that have come on the market in the last few years.

Peter T. - Of course, I'm right. The song wasn't a song until the play became a movie musical - or was it? Did the original stage play have a dialogue like that?
