Subject: Lyr Req: Looking for derivation of 'Molly Malone'
From: The Barden of England
Date: 18 Feb 06 - 03:33 PM

I friend from Solon USA has asked the following:-

I've searched for the words for a song that crossed my mind while eating oriental food last evening.
I tried "google" but had no luck- possibly because I had the wrong name.
The song is from many years ago and I believe the first lines are: -

Was in Yokohama,
I met this hot mama,
Crying "Octopus, jellyfish, rice and dried squid.

It is to the tune of 'In Dublin's fair city - Molly Malone".

Can anybody help please?

John Barden

Twas in Yokohama,
I met my hot mama,
She sold octopus, radishes, rice and dried squid,
Her name was Suzuki, she sure was some cookie,
She sold octopus, radishes, rice and dried squid.

I can't remember what comes next. It used to be on the radio in the 60s here in NZ, sung as a sort of comic pop song. Possibly the singer misheard jellyfish, because radishes seem rather odd in Asian cooking.
The tune is similar to Molly Malone only jazzed up a bit.
Robyn

In Dublin's fair city,
the largest of titties,
Was said to belong to sweet Molly Malone,
All the lads would escort her,
For the left one gave porter
And the right one spewed Guinness for one and five, oh

Pretty sure this was a Stan Freeberg song from sometime in the early sixtiers. I always knew it as "Rice and dried squid"
