Subject: Tune Req: Entertaining Set list suggestions
From: Fullerton
Date: 19 Feb 06 - 07:25 AM

I'm putting a set together for a 3 piece acoustic band. Drums, Tuba & guitar/mand/vocals.
I am the I am the latter component.
We're playing acoustic blues - Blind boys, Son House, Swan Silvertones sort of thing. New Orleans is a common thread but trad jazz is NOT the objective. Professor Longhair rather than Kenny Ball. We all met up at a Katrina fundraiser. The drummer has a detailed knowledge of New Orleans rhythms (can play very quietly!) and the tuba is sooo damned funky.

Rehearsals are going well but I need some sage advice from the oracle-like, collective wisdom of the Mudcat.

We are looking for ENTERTAINING songs to include in our set. Not House of the Rising Sun!

Any suggestions will be gratefully received and fully investigated. (and I'll get you a pint at the YG too if you're there!)

Thanks

Fullerton

"Sweet Home, Chicago" has both a N.O.'s and blues sound to it...

Fred McDowell's "Red Cross Blues" certainly might get some attention...

Maybe a little Little Feat with "Dixie Chicken"???

"Empire State Express" by Son House... Yeah, I can hear the tuba in that song...

"Teriplane Blues" by Robert Johnson is kinda underplaayed but a fun song...

Arthur Krudupps, "Mystery Train" certainly has been covered but most folks these days don't know it.. Elvis covered it as well, BTW...

These are just a few off the top of my head but if you really want to get a kickass set list stop over at Tweedsblues.net and you will get "your business fixed"...

All good ideas Bobert. Thanks lots. I've got a good few of those and they certainly are hitting the spot!

I can acquire the rest the tuba guy has got one or two of them- i've just been tryin mystery train. We'll try it tonight..

You've got the right idea though. Of course the manner of a song's delivery matters, but some songs are just entertaining by design, I think.

Anyone else?
