Subject: Musical Boatbuilding From: Skipjack K8 Date: 24 Feb 06 - 03:06 PM I'm absolutely in awe of this/these guy/s. Victorious, an old Lynn shrimper have been hammering away on an old wreck for years, and then this gem turns up. Hit the bit that says Victorious slides |
Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: frogprince Date: 24 Feb 06 - 04:04 PM Fantastic. Talk about "Rise again". I immediately have all kinds of questions: How old was that thing, actually? How long did the resurrection take? Did they actually save any of the old wood, or just use it for a pattern as they went? etc, etc. |
Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: Barry Finn Date: 24 Feb 06 - 04:13 PM And how long did it take & what would it be called? Cutter, maybe what type? Was that her orginial name & where was she rerestored? Thanks, nice showing. BTW, whose singing Industrial Disease? Barry |
Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: Skipjack K8 Date: 24 Feb 06 - 05:52 PM Dang, I knew there was music in this! Check this out, The guy's a guitar maker! . She's a Lynn Shrimper, which were smacks built to work the narrow (and shallow) channels in the Was, fishing out of King's Lynn. The principal yard was Worfolks, but several others built similar vessels. The Rock of Ages that was rebuilt by Eric Hammond of this parish (Barrow upon Humber) was a rare double-ender built by Gostellows of King's Lynn, and she sailed the Humber for a decade recently. There is also a splendid example of a Lynn Shrimper called the Mermaid LN32, that was rebuilt by Jack Waterhouse in Tollesbury, Essex (my home) and is still moored there. They were fore-and-aft rigged to work the narrow channels, and the crews that worked these smacks were the natural resource for the great Edwardian yachts, as they were brought up in the cutter rigged tradition. I'll stop, 'cos I'm even boring me by now. BTW, Barry, it's Dire Straights doing Industrial Disease, with what sounds like Graeme Garden as the doctor. |

Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: Skipjack K8 Date: 24 Feb 06 - 07:01 PM Frogprince, sorry, I didn't answer you. These old rebuilding projects cause a bit of a stir, because in essence, the new boat only occupies the hole in the water that the old one enjoyed, a bit like the 50 year old yard broom that had the head renewed every even year and the handle every odd year. Because these old girls lost their shape due to hogging or breaking their backs in uneven mudberths, they have to be pulled back into shape. Then the rotten frames (ribs on yachts) are replaced, or at best doubled, and the original shape regained, and then the planks are replaced. Usually, it is only some old scraps of wood down in the deadwood (the bit near where the rudder is hung) that are original. The problem comes when the new owner goes out pot hunting, rigs the ship with go-faster sails and cleans up the silverware, and the more rotten boats' crews start howling about 'spirit of tradition'. It's a bit like folk music. |

Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: ragdall Date: 25 Feb 06 - 12:24 AM Skipjack, It's a very interesting site. The ship is wonderful! How/where does one hear the music? (BTW, Barry, it's Dire Straights doing Industrial Disease, with what sounds like Graeme Garden as the doctor.) |

Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: GUEST,Victorious Date: 25 Feb 06 - 07:09 AM There is no "they" I did it all myself.. singlehanded in the true sense of the word. (a further clue is in the fact that i dont/cannot build/play guitars anymore.) Started her rebuild in oct 1998. Launched in June 2005 Her age is hard to pin down as many of these boats were built "as a yacht" then went to work and only regestered when caught. Kings Lynn historian said 1902... but that is unlikely to be accurate as i have now discovered she appears in the Fishing Rgester in 1923..... 21 years seems a long time to Get away with working unregestered.. How much is original? More than many would realise... less than i had hoped. I started from a wreck buried in the mud.... replaced what i had to. Details will get published in relavant boat mags in due course. There are vidios of her rescue and relaunch... but they are much to big files to put on my website. Music used includes. Eric clapton, Bernard Cribbins, Arlo Guthrie, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Dire straits and Roger Waters |
Subject: RE: Musical Boatbuilding From: Barry Finn Date: 25 Feb 06 - 11:55 AM Congrats Victorious I think we all knew it was a single handed feat & were just joking about what an accomlishment it is to have done own your own. Nice job on the documention, too. Thanks for posting it here. Barry |
