Subject: Folklore: Poor Howard from New Riverside, Extemp?

Another thread about the Sorry Muthas from Minneapolis in the early 70's reminded me of another musician who called himself Poor Howard and played blues and bottle neck guitar at the Extemp and Riverside during the same era. His real name was Howard Stith(sp?) and last I heard he moved to the east coast.

Anyone have an idea of what happened to him?

Thanks,
Tom

Howard and his wife Barbara have been living somewhere in the general vicinity of Portsmouth, NH for quite awhile. Not sure if they live around UNH or over cross the river in Maine.

Howard's on the road a lot (brings me back news of Leinenkugel when I see him). Don't get to see the two of them often enough around The Press Room.

Actually, I think one of the Press Room Irregulars ran into Howard at the grocery store or something (in, perhaps, Dover) and he said something about finding time to come to one of our weekly sessions again. Thatwas about a month or two ago.

I recall Howard getting to Joe Moore's Green Dragon Inn folk club bar in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Great pizza and steaks.---Late 1970s maybe. Good music. Good memories. Playing there was as close to a paid vacation as I ever got!

I remember Poor Howard from just before he moved East. Last time I talked to him was in the mid- '80' when Margaret and I were playing in Eau Claire at a place called the Gnu Deli and he happened to call the owner. I said howdy again and he said he was out East at that point. If you see him tell him I wish him well.

I'm pretty sure he and Barbara Trow live in Dover, New Hampshire.

I got the song "Farewall Superior Sperm" about the Great Lakes whale fishery from him. ;-)

Yes indeed, Howard and Barb live in Dover, NH. I saw them last August, and they were doing well. He isn't as wild about e-communication as I am, so I'll print this thread out and send it to him.

Poor Howard is definitely alive and well and living in Dover, New Hampshire. We've been here almost 20 years now. How time flys. I am slightly more e-mail friendly than he is. I won't be getting this list as direct email but I will now check it periodically and pass this info on to him when he gets back home.
Thanks for thinking of us.
Barb
