Hi Sal! Answer to your question, I think, is do what's best for you. On the other hand, you could try getting some help with the organising; maybe from people like Geoff and I who are not in BC, but are perfectly capable of making phone calls, doing publicity, arranging venues etc. Give us a shout if you think this is a way forward.

We're having a story walk this year around BC which is being run by The Winged Word (local story spinners) it promises to be mysterious, scarey and exciting. And don't forget Mr.KD on the Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

Well my daughter has now become thoroughly addicted to folk festivals and events and is complaining that nothing goes on around here. She really enjoyed herself at our local Mayday celebrations on Monday and is asking when the next thing will be on, so we may have to come to BC for her sake if nothing else.

We intended to come last year but Shady had a dance exam on the Saturday so we didn't. I haven't looked at my diary yet but I'm hoping.....It sounds like our sort of festival.

Camping will be £12 if you write to me now (pm me) or go to last years web site for my phone no and address. On the gate it'll be £15.

The 3 Tuns has decided NOT to accept the music sessions so
THE KING'S HEAD have come up trumps. New tenants have arrived there and are very keen indeed. Loads of space and want the music. Thank God! Down side is that there won't be a ceilidh because we can't find a venue for that.

I'm so sorry that the 3 Tuns have decided this way, new tenants there also and haven't experienced the folk weekend so has no idea what he's going to be missing out on!!!

The Castle Hotel is v nice & has good beer and food. Then there's the Old Brick Guest House of which I know nothing.   And others, probably. Sally will know more......

Camping is on playing fields behind main st and next to the six bells. On the camping field there will be kids activities. Someone else can tell you more but I know Jan will be there wth her van as i spoke to her yesterday.

Hi Lynne; website still out of date I'm afraid; my fault, not Sally's. There's been a lot going on, and I haven't been able to finish it in time. The best way to describe the festival (correct this if I'm wrong Sally) is 'a really great Fringe with a small Festival attached'. There is a concert on Friday night with the inimitable Keith Donnelly, and sessions/singarounds all over the place at other times. As an example, I'll be in the Kings Head most of the weekend with some friends from the legendary Wilkes Head session in Leek, hopefully playing and singing up a storm. Are you bringing the bombarde? It's just that the town is in a bit of a time warp, and some of the older residents might mistake it for an air-raid siren!

People tend to head for home on Sundays. As a fringie, it all sounds good to me...bit of singing, bit of playing....NOT on the bombarde. I'm not much further ahead with that. Ted is out of work at the moment, so at home much of the time. I like a nice empty house to practise!

If you are coming from the North take the secod right turn signposted for BC. This will bring you in at the bottom of the town. After 100 yds you will come to Pub, the 6 Bells on your right and Church ( with 6 bells) on your right. The main street is round to the right but if you carry on another 150 yds the entrance o campsite is on your right.

If you find you have arrived in BC near the 3 tuns you need to turn L just after he Tuns and chipshop, go to bottom of hill and turn right by the 3 tuns.

How much? £15 per adult and U14s free for the weekend at the gate.
is there Camping? yes, buy your ticket upon your arrival.
where is it located. The Campsite is off Kerry Lane,Bishop's Castle on the playing fields.
Any info on events? Friday night 8.00 concert at the 3 Tuns with various artists supporting Keith Donnelly. £6/£3 u14. At the same time a singaround at The 6 Bells. Also at the same time a music session at the King's Head. Saturday kicks off with a 10.30 breakfast singaround at the Poppy House, or meet at the Town Hall for a Horrible Histories story Walk around the town. 12.00 is the start of the singaround, sea songs and shanties with Mr. Steve Freedman and Mr. Alan Whitbred. Folk Club in the afternoon 12.oo to book a spot at 3 tuns. There's loads more, come and see. Who makes the entertainment? Chiefly yourselves!

The festival is underway, and those who are going will already be there, probably without Mudcat access, but from past experience you should be able to do just that. It may be an idea to ring Sally first, but I'm not sure she would want her mobile number on Mudcat so I'll give you mine and then you can ring me for hers is you are unsure.

Missed it, Missed out. That was the last one that I am going to organise. The local folkies were not interested, the town's people weren't either. I really haven't got enough space in my head to do it again. If the locals don't care, why should I? The Keith Donnelly concert had 11 who paid and the rest of the audience were performers. After 5 years, I really can't do it again. This isn't 'folk' country. It appears to be the dreaded 'F' word.

Next year, maybe Montgomery and a really big band to kick it off.

I'm sorry it didn't work out as well Sal, although you know what my general thoughts are. You also know that there are plenty of very active folkies in the area so to say it's not 'folk country' may not be completely accurate - I don't think that non-attendance at the weekend is an indication of anything other than the fact that it hasn't delivered what the locals are interested in - compare it with the sell out at every concert at Hope.

I wouldn't want anybody to get the idea that our neck of the woods is a void with regards to traditional music - you know that it isn't.

I think it was G K Chesterton who said something to the effect that society started to break up when people stopped singing together and started paying other people to sing for them, simply on the absurd grounds that they were better at it. Sadly, that attitude has now got into the folk world (once the last bastion of DIY music) as well. If the only thing that will get the local "folkies" off their backsides is a series of concerts where they can listen to people who are paid to do their singing for them, then I'd say you are right - it isn't "folk country".

Where is? That's a harder question.

So sorry you had such a bad experience - you must be gutted to have put in all that work for so little. Sounds like there were some good informal sessions though - perhaps that's a better way to go, forget the concerts and big names, just invite singers and players to a weekend of DIY music? Works elsewhere.

I think the football had quite a lot to do with apparent lack of interest.

I understand how you are feeling Sally...we ran our folk weekend for 6 years, and though it was good, there were always only just enough people to make it worth doing. And that was a free one with free camping too.

Shady and I had a good time anyway. Shady complains that where we live is not folk country too. Maybe the way to go these days is weekend-long sessions with no paid guests and no messing about with money, which is always a hassle in itself.

More or less any night of the week within a 30 mile radius of BC you can hear live music being produced by the locals, as Sal knows, being part of the scene herself (certainly in the past, maybe less so now). That fact was central to the original, successful, bid for lottery funding for BCFW. The first year the town was fair buzzing, second less so and it seems to have gradually fizzled out.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be of moving five miles down the road to Montgomery. Whoever is going to take the helm will have to have some engagement with the locals if they want support.

My point was that in order to gain involvement from the locals thay need to feel involved - for whatever reason, despite Sal's efforts and enthusiasm for 'her' weekend, they don't.

Well Sandy & I had a good relaxing time Sally!
And, after the inevitable slowish start, the 12noon to 6pm The Sea Song & Shanty Session, which Steve & I ran, went very well - and it was head-to-head with the football!
I'm sure that the people who attended enjoyed the weekend! Yes, overall there were fewer people at the festival this year but could you have done better with your marketing?
It was a pity that The Three Tuns decided that it wouldn't let its bars be used for music & song but I don't think that made any significant difference.
It will be interesting to see how the English Country Music Weekend is received by the locals. Again The Three Tuns has opted out, so the main sessions are in The Church Barn and The Six Bells - and I gather Dave Hunt, who is organising it, has had trouble with them about the potential loss of their food trade in the evenings!
So see you on Friday 23 to Sunday 25 June at Bishop's Castle?

Twas ever such in The Six Bells, Alan, which is why one of the best seshes around here went into terminal decline.

I, too, am interested to see how the ECMW goes. It is, of course, being run at the same time as the 'Midsummer Rejoicing' organised by The Shropshire Bedlams. It would have been good to see how the BCFW would have fared if it could have been tied in somehow - it never happened for some reason.

It just occurred to me as well, bearing in mind Crane Driver's comments, that the local folkies also didn't support the folk club started by Sal a few months ago - even though they wouldn't have had to do anything apart from turn up. Again, a bit of consultation may have helped Sal to deliver what was wanted locally.

And lest anybody thinks otherwise, I know only too well how much effort the organisation of the weekend needed, so this is not a criticism of Sal's hard work, just some possible reasons as to why it hasn't been as successful as she would have liked.

Well, The locals knew about it. I did attend sessions leading up to the event. I advertised in local publications and Steve sent press releases to all the local news papers. (I accompanied a photogrpher around the town on Sunday so the photos will be in The South Shropshire Journal) Posters went up all over the place, but I found that posters in BC were taken down and I had to replace them 4 times! Oh and most of the road signs were stolen.

The people who ran the story walk on the saturday morning were supposed to be running the tellaround in the afternoon, but decided not to turn up! We had to apologise to the local children who turned up for that event and send them to the Jester on the playing field instead!

Last year the story telling people organised an evening of stories on the Friday night and that was a complete loss.
9 people turned up, one child, who fell asleep. This was the first year we decided to have a concert on the Friday night. This was to celebrate 5 years of BCFW for which we had money from the local Council Arts Fund. Usually we advertise the event as 'the fringe without the main event'. The singarounds and music sessions are exactly the same as the local ones so I think it could be a territoral thing. A lot of the local folkies don't go to festivals and their fringes and don't want to mix with 'foreigners'.

I agree the footie does kill events and trading. what can I say? It's all my fault, the locals don't like me! (Tongue in cheek) I also think that there is a personal element preventing the local music makers from coming. If I asked them they would make polite excuses but I think it's got something to do with my ex-marriage. Loyalties and not offending him etc. Ah well, ces't la vie.

I've been beaten. So if anyone else can organise a folk event in BC I'd be willing to pass on any info etc., maybe they can make a better job of it. I'm moving away and starting a new life looking after my agen parents. I'm even changing my name!

I may sound disappointed, but actually I'm glad it's all over for me. The stress has taken its toll and I need a rest. I do too many things and need to shed a few. I think my kids'll agree. Steve too should the truth be known!

Hi Folks,

(My apologies if this message appears more than once - damn computers!)

Don't know if anyone will read this now that the BCFW has been and gone but there were a couple of references to the English Country Music Weekend (ECMW) and also the Six Bells so I thought I'd update you on our experience (I was co-organiser of the ECMW with Dave Hunt).

First, the ECMW was a tremendous success with approx 170 people attending from all over the country and maybe 75% of those attending were musicians. At one point we had approx eighty musicians in a single session all playing the same tunes, wonderful!

We made no attempt to advertise the event to the locals - having run a folk session in the town for fifteen months I realised quite a while ago that it is a thankless task to try and get them interested. Oddly though, the badges we had made with "ECMW" on them seemed to attract lots of attention with many people asking what it stood for and why we hadn't advertised it!

We had no Lottery funding or grants and therefore we had no commitment to provide "entertainment". The musicians were happy to play just for themselves – and they did, for hour after hour.

Ref the food at the Six Bells - the pub is a business and I realised early on that we could affect their restaurant trade if we took over the pub (I also noticed on the Saturday night at the BC Folk Weekend that people were not allowed into the pub until nearly ten because people were eating). Simple solution - I "booked" all the tables on Friday and Saturday and then took orders from those attending the ECMW - we filled the room both nights. I also asked Sue at the Bells to move the food slot forward to finish at Eight O'Clock to leave plenty of time for a session. In the event we packed the other bar on Friday evening, all day Saturday and Sunday which left the food bar quiet for people to chill out in.

I was in constant contact with Nev and Sue at the Bells all weekend making sure everybody was happy - it would appear to have worked because Nev has asked when we are having the next one. Those attending the ECMW also appear to have enjoyed it as we have already been asked to host the weekend again next year.

Lessons -

Know who your target audience are and focus on them.

Be realistic, don't expect people to just turn up - they won't.

Spending your own money, rather than Lottery money or grants, doesn't half focus the mind on what is practical and sensible.

Don't spread the event too thinly, better to have one or two events with lots of people rather than four or five sparsely attended.

Keep the landlord (and his partner) happy, don't take liberties and don't throw a pint of beer over his favourite barmaid.

You are quite right Steve, I've had enough. The most disappointing thing was not seeing any local folkie faces at the BCFW. It must be me they don't like and don't want to support anything I do. That includes the 'folk club' I attempted to organise. Where were all the faces that go to Hope village hall and the singarounds and sessions in the area?

The local newspaper reported my thoughts very well even tho a few pages further into the paper the photo's were of happy smiling singing people and the market traders in an empty market hall, and the jester entertaining 5 kids!

OK,OK,not here often...and apparently missed Sally at FatE yesterday where we played a 40 minute much delayed set in the heat (32 degrees....recuperating later with a curry and pint from the Tuns...yum). CAMRA once again had a supply issue,sigh.

I digress...apologies for being one missing "local Folkie", as you say life moves on and I was walking in the Peak District with "a friend" , also it clashed with the SEED weekend at Llandinam - another smacked wrist for non-attendance. ECMW was missed too with playing a wedding ceilidh in E Anglia. Sorry.

Hope to make the ECMW next year, and BCFF if it happens. Well done Sally and Steve for all their hard work.
